I hope that's not the Fair Pony this year too..

and if it is I'm glad I didn't pre-order one.

Light up? Lack of brushable hair makes me sad, but It prevents bronies from being picky and cutting it anyway, so whatevs. I want one, but if I end up missing one, I won't be too upset.

no light up. Those are crystal embellishments you see.

Hum, I like the glitter and it's cool that the eyes look light-up. I'll probably see if I can get someone to pick one up for me.

Edit: Crystals are good too! Shiny is never a bad thing.

It's rather funky, and the glasses are cool.
In fact... I'm rather loving the use of Swarovski....  :glitter:

Edit:
I've been looking at her and really am very taken with her :P Just need to figure a way to acquire her lol

I won't be getting her, I don't even really like the character that much, so look at the money I'll be saving!  :P

But for those of you who want her, good luck picking one up!

It says the box lights up.

Unfortunately it likely is the Fair Pony :( the price matches and Hasbro did say last year that it would be the same pony for the two events from now on.

Spiffy! Thanks for the news.

Better than last year's. *ducks fakies* :P

I find it sort of sad that they are not using her Hasbro name, just the weird fan name that doesn't really appeal to me.

I didn't see Hasbro say anything about the 30th anniversary at all, maybe I'm just blind, but I didn't expect anything to represent an anniversary.

I'm not even sure Hasbro is aware it's the 30th - they haven't done a thing advertising it - or released any retro or birthday sets.

I think pony folk expected a brushable/something with hair. A molded form is cool but kinda on the Funko side.

Crystals and light-up doodads! This is the Lady Gaga of ponies, only not as exciting as the words "Lady Gaga of Ponies" sounds like it would be.

I do not  like the price :(, she is like a Funko and they go for  14 to 16 dllrs !
well I might not even have the chance to go anyway  so  meh!  >_<

I like her new do and the fact that (from what it looks like) her glasses aren't just painted on over the eye sockets.

Can't wait to see more pics of her!

Meh, another boring plastic molded haired pony  :cold:

It would be interesting if they could have made at least a pony that there wasen't made before like Daring Doo or Mare do well

I miss the days of the super cool art ponies designs  and the comicon superheroes and villians :yikes:

Wow, a non-brushable? It's still kinda neat but I dunno...the hair is like, half the reason MLP is so great. :/ Ah well, it's just one less exclusive to pine over for me. I can imagine plenty of people are super excited.

I like her, and I can see why she's an exclusive, but she's a bit of a let down.  I already have a few toys of her, having her as an exclusive, even in this form, doesn't feel very exclusive.

I'm feeling very torn about this. I love her but if she was any other "fanon" character i would not have bothered to get her. We already got Funko making fully molded ponies and we know Vinyl will be in one of their upcoming releases.

Don't know...a part of me wants 5 of her and another part wishes it was a more traditional and creative pony toy.

Moulded hair? On a Hasbro fashion size pony...wow...I will admit to being disappointed. No brushable hair on a MLP collectable :( One of the things the line is pretty much all about and has been all about for 30 years. For $50 a pop they had so many options, so many things they could have done. But they stuck some crystals on what will still be a $15 body pony and called her fancy. And this is a special mould after all in order to have the moulded hair so they could have done something much more exciting or much more reflective of the general history of MLP. Oh well...at least its different I guess.

Post by: Catlein on June 05, 2013, 01:11:19 PM
Yeah... I'm fine with a G4 (since that's the line right now, and I do love them so), but I was expecting something... more interesting for $50. Sure, she's covered in crystals, but that's the only thing that makes her different from a design-a-pony with her paint already applied. I have to say, I really appreciate the old Fair/SDCC exclusives that were so intricately designed and unique, and I wish they would find a way to introduce those types of concepts to the G4 lines.

(Also, I was so hoping that it was going to be a Discord. It was unlikely, but it would have been awesome!)
Title: Re: SDCC pony revealed!
Post by: Marigold on June 05, 2013, 01:13:38 PM
I like the idea of Swarovski a lot and I am okay with G4s but that is where it ends.

I don't like:
-DJ Pon3  (She just isn't a favorite of mine and I don't like that you never see her eyes)
-Non-brushable
-glitter everywhere instead of more crystals (if you look closely she doesn't even have that many real crystals).
-light up box (only because I've never been big on things with batteries that eventually fail).
-Doesn't celebrate 30 years in a big way
-Doesn't celebrate 30 year anniversary at all

So, I am disappointed.  But on the other hand now I don't have to worry about buying an expensive second hand pony.

Hasbro never made any indication that they even know about a 30th anniversary, so to be expecting them to have magically noticed it seems kinda silly to me...

She is cute, but I don't feel she's $50 cute, even if she has Swarovski crystals on her. She does look more like a Funko exclusive more than a Hasbro one. Wished she had at least brushable hair or something.

I had kinda hoped it would have been Discord as the exclusive, even if he was pony-fied. ^^; or maybe even an artsy-style G4 mane 6 pony (like past exclusives with how artsy and pretty/neat they were).

Hasbro does not have an online pre order system like Mattel and some other suppliers.

Pre orders tend to be people who make listings on ebay and then attempt to fulfil the orders they have taken.

Preorders for ponyfair sold out in less than a day.  So there are none left.  There has never been preorders for hasbro toys at comic con.  In the case of both events, even with preorders (which there aren't for comic con) you have to go and pick them up personally.

I kinda like her because I like Vinyl. But three things irk me.

1. I just hope Hasbro prepares for the rush this year. Running out of your con exclusive by day two of a seven day convention is really bad.

2. What happened to original designs? I know MLP is under the most pressure from the fandom than it ever has been but older ponies need love too.

3. After all the hype this seems... underwhelming? Looks more like something Funko would make than Hasbro.

Any word on whether this is the same exclusive for MLP Fair?

-DJ Pon3  (She just isn't a favorite of mine and I don't like that you never see her eyes)
That's not true; they're visible in A Canterlot Wedding Part 2.

Anyway, I'm with most of you. Funko's going to release a figure of her that'll presumably look pretty much identical, but without the silly glitter and perforated sunglasses and stuff, and for much cheaper. This is barely a character at all; she's never even had a speaking part. The pose is dull and it doesn't feel very My Little Ponyish.

A lot more for $50.
That's kinda how I feel about her. Like,if she had more crystals on her (like on her cutie mark, a "bling'd out" crystal glasses, horn, and hair), then I could understand it more.

Shoot, I'd be fine if she herself actually (mostly-to-full body) lit up like those LED shirts (to where if you hooked up your MP3 player to her, she'd light up in the beat of the song that's playing). That, I could see being like $40 to $50 for an exclusive.

As a kid the cheapest toys were always the ones who had molded hair.  Like McDonald ponies and Barbies.  I know there are now lots of cool, detailed, and often expensive collectibles with molded hair, but I still can't help feeling as if it is a cheap version of the real thing.

Sometimes my friend Firefly and I would get Comic Con ponies if we liked them but I can say (even if I had money) I wouldn't be getting this one.  Do the crystals make it worth $50 from Hasbro's perspective.  I really hope the funko vinyls won't be the future of MLP fairs.  I prefer brushables.  Give the funko vinyls to comic con for the brony's and leave the brushables for us fans.

I agree, brushable hair is half the fun of MLP! But I guess this plastic hair ensures show accuracy and prevents pony baldness. XD

...Glad I have no reason to want an exclusive pony this year.

I would pay out the nose for something like that! I have a lot of pony trance remixes that would make good use of that kind of cool feature. And it would give Vinyl some kind of character or quirk.

What did you people expect?

There is a whole thread on what we expected!  Unless you are saying we should have known to be disappointed and should have known they wouldn't acknowledge their own anniversary?  Sounds like you have no faith in Hasbro.  Is that what you mean?
Uhh, I meant that Hasbro has not acknowledged an anniversary at all this year and i feel like assuming they would is a bit silly and too hopeful that they'd just suddenly remember. Besides, I'd assume IF they acknowlede it, it'd not be an exclusive like this. :/

Well Hasbro made darn sure to remember OTHER toys (and lets just say the primary fanbase of these toys are men, lets call it like we see it)

Let's face it, we already know that Hasbro favors the brony's now and pretty much pushes aside collectors at this point.  This makes me sad.  I want a fair pony exclusive when I go to the RI fairs, because it's a cool souvenir like getting a t-shirt but in pony form.  I don't think they would charge $50 for a standard G3 mold type pony or even a G4 type mold.  Unless the pony was made of platinum or had diamonds on it or something.  That's more of a joke really though.

Even though I like this figure, I will say that it is sad that Hasbro refocused their efforts :( maybe though its because they know who is primarily buying their G4 line? I know some older gen collectors also collect G4, but probably not as many as the population of those who collect G4 from the new show fan base (sorry, I just hesitate to use the word brony since I am not affiliated with that group but do almost exclusively collect G4).

It's sad, but hey, maybe we will see some shoutout with Minty and Wysteria in the works!

For me personally, I am disappointed that it is Vinyl Scratch. I am not surprised though as the bronies LOVE her, but she was never featured in the show and we've seen her only a few times in 3 seasons. She has had no speaking lines or done anything other than shown DJing for mere seconds twice and seen in the audience once during the "What My Cutie Mark is Telling Me" sequence in the season 3 finale.

I would have preferred a boy like Big Mac or a character that actually has a part in the series and isn't a background pony that has less than a minute of show time in 3 seasons. Heck, if it were Rarity decked out in crystals, that would be even better as that suits the character and she is a main character.

I was expecting more, but I had a huge feeling it was going to be her due to her popularity with bronies. Just like Bubblecup/Drama Pony.

I think because it's all plastic. Funko has already said something along the lines of her being released down the road so I am unsure why Hasbro went this road. You can buy a funko version without the glitter and glued on gems for less then $20.00 at hot topic.

yeah that is how I feel.  If it's an exclusive, it should be an exclusive.  Not just a rejig of something already out.  Maybe if it was a redo of an old character (the way they do with transformers or GI Joe) I'd be ok, but seriously, vinyl is everywhere.  She isn't special.

G4 is the current generation, so anything else wouldn't have made any sense. But it's Vinyl, who isn't a main cast member by any stretch of the imagination, and it's a pretty dull design overall, and there'll be another release of her soon enough which will likely look much better for only about $16.

You know what? Vinyl is my favorite of the 'background ponies' as they are called, and I still think this exclusive is lousy! The non-brushable hair is cheap and doesn't honor the history of MLP, and removes one of the ways we as collectors interact with these toys. And it further divides the vocal G4 fanbase collectors from those of us who have been collecting since previous gens, because the former is the group that has often complained about the brushable hair in the past.

Not only the hair or the character choice, but man this is one ugly exclusive! This pony looks just like one of the Funko ones but with crystals and glitter slapped on. It reminds me of the people who glue rhinestones all over a pony and try to sell her on ebay as art. o_0

Hasbro, why not make her actually look like how she appears in the show? She's not covered in glitter and crystals, that's for sure! The crystals are quite obviously a gimic to justify the $50 pricetag. Also I love the "this is not for children" line on the box. Trying to make us think it's an adult toy and thus worth the price?

You know if she had looked different, I would definitely try to get one, since she's one of my fave character designs, but I guess I'm just going to wait for the Funko at this point. Oh well, $50 in my wallet, where it's going to stay...

This. If someone showed me this pony without telling me anything about it I would've said "Oh wow, Funko went all out for SDCC!" Nothing about it says "Hasbro" and everything about it says "cheap." I like it and even I wouldn't pay $50 for this. 30 maybe but 50 is lunacy.

For me, it's half disappointment at the cheapness and half confusion at their choice. Considering they're gonna be pushing Equestria Girls at SDCC a Fashion Style Sunset Shimmer would be a lot prettier and make a lot more sense for the direction of the toy line.

Because it's Vinyl Scratch/ DJ Pon-3, especially considering we know that Funko is going to be releasing a figure of her in the near-ish future for a much lower price. So, to me at least, it's like "Exclusive or not, why shell out $50 for this one when Funko's version will be $30+ cheaper and generally will (quite likely) look the same (minus the crystals and glitter)?" ^^;
On another MLP site, some bronies are already mentioning that they'll just wait for the Funko one to be released instead of going for the SDCC Vinyl Scratch.

the non-brushable hair kills it for me.
I don't mind the bling, especially since my Fair/Con ponies stay MIB, but there's nothing really special about this design. It's certainly NOT worth $50

if it's the Fair pony too, there's a good chance I will be selling or trading mine....but it sounds like many others will as well...leading to her price dropping
I prefer the black and white pinkie pie, and given the choice between the two I REALLY hope Pinkie is the Fair pony....and I was hoping the Fair would have been something more special than her.

I'm not sure if Summer or anyone else actually knows-

but WHY is the Fair and SDCC pony the same now?  It seems like most Pony Fair attendees are old school collectors that want an art pony- correct?  Would it really be so hard to let the Fair keep it's tradition of making a new art pony?  Just doesn't seem like that would be too such a big deal.  I really am baffled.

As for the SDCC pick itself-  I like G4s but the DJ Pony is a little boring now- was hoping for something more unusual since we will already get DJ Pony from Funko.

That said- I still want her.

I have a hypothesis, which is just that but...

Prior to last year, the fair had to buy x amount of ponies, which they helped design themselves.  They were then sold by the fair, not hasbro.

I think there were always left overs, and maybe Summer didn't want to be left with ponies, so she first tried dropping the number she purchased, and then did a deal with hasbro where they sold the exclusives, which wouldn't be practical unless they sold the same exclusive as they sold at comic con.

Weh...on second thought. $50 is a wee bit too much now that I remember that the Funko one is going to be released. Maybe I'll try to find her secondhand on eBay later...but I suppose I don't have to rush.

It's actually pretty cool, but for the 30th anniversary I would have preferred something a little more representative of the whole line.

I like it enough (wouldn't pay $50 for her if not part of ticket package, but am glad to have another sparkly thing, including a box (!?!?!) that lights up--probably the ballroom glitter ball) but I agree with sebby6. This is thirty years... Let's reflect the whole journey! I  guess since she's a party pony, she represents celebration. :D

ETA: the 25th anniversary pony, though, is my least favorite of the art ponies... Have to say I like DJ better than that one, too.

In my opinion, if they cared about their customers and what they want they should make two different ponies.  People on hasbro have already said they lurk the forums to see what their customers want and how current products are selling and what people think of them.  Not everyone is a brony, hasbro goes in that direction because it seems that bronies are their biggest money-maker at this point.  But, hasbro should keep in mind their collectors too.  The fair ponies were made for collectors and if they are just going to remove the collector aspect and favor the bronies for the fair ponies  and the comic con ponies things might not turn out so good.

Meh... Funko will release the same thing in a sleeker mold for $15.00.  I'll go that route.  I guess I should be relieved.  No stressing out over tracking down the exclusive.

For $50, Hasbro should have done a lot more.  I'm talking a gift set, pony with a unique mold, or pony with a complicated show-accurate outfit (ie, Photo Finish).

I like her a lot, but as an exclusive she's disappointing.

As others have said, we already have a brushable of her, she is easily the most merchandised pony short of Ditzy Doo and the mane six, and we're getting three Funko vinyl figures of her (regular, Pop!, and that cupcake one) this year or early next and no doubt the standard vinyl figure will look exactly like this, minus the crystals and glitter. She's not much of an exclusive. The same thing happened with Ditzy, just in a different order.

It's obvious Hasbro is focusing its collector/adult market sights on the bronies and they love their bg ponies but wow, it'd be nice to have an exclusive that's actually... exclusive? The fun thing about exclusives in the past is that they were limited, there were no mass-produced versions made of them beforehand or later on. I know Vinyl is going to be FS size and have a light-up box and Swarovski crystals and the whole she-bang, but they could have put all that on a pony that we aren't going to see 20 times this year.

Let me just start off by saying -- there will be collectors that don't like something about every exclusive pony that comes out. Even in past years with the G3 ponies people were complaining about one thing or another. That's just the way it goes.

However... I'm not sure how I feel about this. I'm already a collector and I have been for years. I don't need the pony's box to tell me or a figure that's made "just to be a collectable" to me.. every my little pony is a collectable. Not just the exclusives... hope that makes sense. lol

hhmmm I'm not sure. I don't really like ponies who have hair that you can't brush (what's the point if you can't brush and style her hair!?) I like the crystals though those are pretty. But for $50... IDK I will wait and see if she's around for sale. Maybe.

I will say that I really wanted a pony to celebrate the 30th birthday of MLP. I don't feel this one does it at all. Those retro G1 ponies that we got back when G3 was out is all we are gonna get I guess. Sad.

The only way we can get Hasbro to listen to us is to show them with our wallets and not buy her. If they think the only way to make money is to ignore the collectors that have been collecting for 30 years they are mistaken. This is a fad, just like many others and it will pass. And when it does the same collectors who have always been collecting MLP will be around.. and they will be sorry to have lost us.

I wish they could have released something different and wit hair, a styling  Daring would be cool since I don't think Hasbro is going to release ever a brown pony wit black and grey hair to the stores

Yeah, although to be fair the Pop! and cupcake ones are very stylized.

Here's a preview of the Pop! one:

And the cupcake set will probably look something like these:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

But Vinyl has been confirmed for the first wave, along with Ditzy, Twilight, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, and Fluttershy.

I remember reading that Vinyl will be released in one of the upcoming vinyl sets this year, but I can't remember when or where so I'm probably just making that up haha. I know the next confirmed wave is Lyra and Pinkie though, and Vinyl is inevitable either way.

Also, I agree that Daring Do would be cool! Especially if they released her with her outfit so she wouldn't just seem like a recoloured Rainbow Dash (even though that is essentially what she is).

2012: Ditzy
2013: Vinyl Scratch
2014: ...Octavia? Time Turner? Some other big merch pony?

She looks fun. I really wouldn't mind having her in my collection. But I don't think I'll be too sore if I can't get one.

(Just saw another picture of her in the Fair speculation thread from a different angle... That hair is crazy!)

oops getting threads mixed up /ignore

X-posted in the Fair speculation thread
Spoiler
Ok I've been thinking about this.
Here's what I like:
It's a G4 Fashion Style size pony. I like that they actually gave her eyelashes (unlike the TRU excl. brushable of last year). I like glitter and the way it was done on her legs looks neat. Light up box is a really interesting idea.

But...
this seems like a really odd choice for the yearly exclusive to me, especially on the 30th anniversary of the line. I do like the molded hair figures but I wish, as the SDCC/Fair pony, that she were brushable. The crystals and their placement to me make her look a little tacky. They may bother me less in person but I'll have to wait and see. I really wish her glasses were a separate, removed accessory. I don't necessarily mind that is is DJ Pon-3 as a character but admittedly it's kinda a let down they chose a pony that is already so merchandised. The OCD part of me wanted the exclusive for this year to have a similar style box to last years.

Overall, I would have been a lot more disappointed if it were another gen. pony or an EqG doll but I'm not necessarily head-over-heels over this choice either. I'm going to the fair for the first time this year and will probably keep her for that reason but I'm not sure if I'd seek her if I weren't. Hasbro has just been making so many crazy decisions lately IMO.

Also out of curiosity, are people more upset that its a G4 pony, or that its Vinyl in particular?

For me, I'm upset that it's Vinyl/DJ Pony (whatever her name is) I expected it to be a G4 (though I was still hopeful for a G1) I don't like DJ Pony and no offense to those that like her, but she's hideous with those glasses and the rhinestones make it worse. I think Hasbro is trying to cash in because they saw the craze for Drama Pony and knew they could have gotten more money for her, seeing what people would pay for her on ebay. So they made a popular brony character and bumped the price to $50 because they know people will pay for it.

I think that's sad, but true.  On the upside, there will probably be way more inventory made of her than usual for those that actually want her.  I don't think she is going to be particularly popular given the Funko release of the same dang pony.

I'm more excited for the Jem doll and the G.I. Joe/Transformers things, and I don't even collect those! Looks like I'll be buying those instead this year, and wait for a less expensive, less tacky version of the Funko pony to come out to my local Hot Topic. If I even bother, I don't really collect Funko ponies and don't have much enthusiasm for them.

Hasbro has been making it surprisingly easy for me to not spend money on new ponies.

I like her. The crystals on her horn are nice, but I'm not a fan of them on her glasses... it makes her eyes look insectoid. In my opinion, it would've looked better just to have them on the frames and not the lenses. It'd be neat if the glasses were removable, but I assume they're not or we'd have seen a picture with them off to showcase that.

Being in the FS mold, I wonder if her body will be like the older ones or the newer, thinner ones. They did a nice job on her mane and tail; I've always liked her design. The head looks to be on very snuggly, like they might have glued it, but it seems like the hair is carefully arranged enough that they might have been able to keep it turnable. Hmm...

It'll be interesting to compare it to the Funko one once they're both released. I know the FS are a little bit larger and I do like their mold better, but I can't drop $50 on a pony. How much did last year's cost, I can't remember? This one is a lot more elaborate. I prefer molded hair, but I do find it strange that they opted for it in this case, since there's another molded hair version in the works. Perhaps the left hand not knowing what the right is doing?

I was going to comment on all the negativity in this thread, but my post was at least twice as long and I've been trying to make an effort to shorten them. *Restraint >_< *

Well, I guess the good part is I will be saving $50. Also, I won't have to spend several days on Hasbro's site, refreshing the page every 5 seconds like I did last year. I don't understand why they'd make Vinyl Scratch with Swarovski crystals (besides to make her more expensive) because I really don't think it suits her. Rarity would have made more sense to be decked out in crystals and glitter. I would have loved a normal brushable FS Minty, though.

I guess the good part about this (besides the fact I'm saving myself $50) is that since this rules out Minty, glittery Wysteria & Pinkie and the FS Pinkie Pie with the black & white balloons and the black stripe in her hair, there's a good chance they'll be normal retail releases, which will make them easier for everyone to get. At least I hope so.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much... but I didn't think it'd be this lousy either. It just looks like a Funko pony with crystals glued on. I hate the molded hair. I wasn't going to get any exclusive ponies anyway, but I thought I'd be kinda bummed about missing out... but now I'm definitely not bummed about missing this.

Like, it only makes sense for it to be a G4. And I was expecting them to cater more to bronies... I just... I don't know with this. I guess I don't think it's that special or exclusive looking.

No- she's $140.  But she comes with two costumes and the head for Jerrica, and she is truly stunning.  But there is almost no chance of getting her.  The Hollywood Jem doll last year was $400-$600 immediately after the Con unless you somehow were lucky enough to get one at SDCC during the first few minutes they were there before getting scooped up by scalpers.   They are still going for that price.  Preorders for GnG Jem are already $300 or over, so I don't have much hope of getting her.  THAT breaks my heart.  WHo cares about missing out on the stupid DJ pony, I'm sure there will be a million of those leftover they are so dull.

Re-posting my post from the fair speculation thread.

Not worth $50.  Extremely disappointed that it does not have brush-able hair.  I don't have anything against the character herself.  She's a white unicorn with blue hair.  That is totally up my ally.  But I don't like the molded on glasses or the molded on hair.  I would have accepted a Daring Do, but this pony I already have in playful size on my shelf.  I don't feel the need to spend any more on this character.  If she were brushable, I might be willing to spend $15 on her.

I think the molded hair is what bothers me the most and here is my complicated reasoning why.  First thing Is the most obvious reasoning.  Being able to comb and style your ponies hair has always been one of the most defining features of mlp.  Each little girl could customize her own pony simply be styling its hair.

This brings me to the second issue I have, the fascination with "show accuracy."    We as collectors have often talked about how when we were little we would make up our own personalities for our ponies.  Even as adult collectors, there was a wide range of interpretations for individual ponies.  But this new (largely Brony fueled) direction that Hasbro is going says that everything has to be exactly like the show.  This character always has to look exactly like *this* and her hair always has to look exactly like *this* and heaven forbid that it isn't exactly like the show.  (And don't get me wrong, I like the show). But MLP use to be all about imagination.  Doesn't feel very conducive to imagination anymore.

Sigh. I will be praying to the pony gods tonight that by some miracle, Hasbro secretly decided to do two different exclusives for the MLP Fair and SDCC. This is my first Fair and I was really hoping for a brushable. I don't even mind that it's an overrated background pony. The crystals are a nice touch, but the molded hair just makes her look unworthy of being a collectors' exclusive.

Yeah- all two of them which will be snapped up by bots run by scalpers- just like last year.  It is almost more cruel to promise to stick a few on the Hasbrotoyshop, I can't tell you how many hours I spent checking back and hitting the refresh button.

Really hope she's not the fair exclusive.

If DJ is the Fair exclusive... I'll wait till I see her in person, but I may end up trying to trade her for last year's SDCC Ditzy.

I absolutely adore her, but I simply can't afford her.

She'd look stunning on a display shelf, but I'm probably going to settle with Funko's Vinyl Scratch, because I can NOT pay $50 for a pony at this current time.

I"ve already paid for her with my ticket. I'll wait to see her in person, but i'm probably going to sell/trade mine. I just hope the market isn't flooded with Fair-goers wanting to sell theirs (as I suspect will be the case), which would make it harder for me to get my money back.
I have a Fair pony from every other Fair I've been to, so it would be sad to not have one from this year....but I don't like the molded hair (made worse by Funko making a cheaper version)
Hasbro made a cheaper pony by not doing brushable hair yet raised the price...I'm angry that it's costing me $50

I hate her, and this is the main reason why.

I like Vinyl Scratch and I like the mold. But the totally random glitter and crystals (and light up? I heard she lights up) are just ridiculous. There's no chance she's worth $50, that price is a rip off. At this rate it looks like I'll never want a G4 exclusive, which is fine with me. Hasbroken is so bad I don't even buy normal G4s anymore, but I would've made an exception for a cool all-generations thing.

I actually like it. Vinyl is one of my favorite ponies and I love merch of her, and I like molded hair... BUT 50 dollars? No way, not for this. Yeah, it's an exclusive, but Funko is making a molded haired figure of her as well, and it'll probably look just like this only way cheaper and without the glitter and holes (and might even be made better if this thing is plastic or something similar. If it was a fashion style Vinyl with brushable hair and maybe even keeping the glitter it would be a lot better and different from the Funko.
I still would like to get this down the line though. maybe it'll be cheaper online if there isn't a big demand for them.

Title: Re: Do you like the SDCC???

I think she is cute, but not worth $50. For that price, I'd rather Vinyl Scratch be like those LED shirts to where she would full-body light up, and parts of her would turn "on and off" in the beat of the song that's playing on your MP3 player (that you connect/hook up to her). Plus, Funko already plans on releasing the figure of Vinyl Scratch later in in year.

At least this reveal of the SDCC pony only leaves me with one Comic Con exclusive to worry about (MH Wydowna). ^^;

Like:
-The sculpt! She looks like a FS pony and doesn't have a strangely-shaped head like Funko or Design-a-pony
-Not Equestian Girls
-The new box style shows more of the pony compared to the previous "box with pony-shaped hole" but it seems flimsier

Dislike
-Poor representation of MLP's 30th anniversary
-The bling is so out of place on her. Also they shouldn't be on the lenses, she looks like a bug!
-They could have made a new pose

If I didn't have the pony package for the fair I wouldn't seek her out, but I like her enough that I wouldn't want to sell her.
It does seem like the backlash from the drama pony incident and these responses mean she'll be easier to get.

As for the hair... If she did have hair, she would be extremely similar to FS Shining Armor who already has is a white unicorn with 2-shades of short blue hair, so I kinda understand that angle.

YOU TOO, HUH??

Seriously, Rarity/AJ were edged out of one of the Funko toylines (the mini-ones I think) for GreyPeg and DJP0n3.

Let that sink in for a minute.

Funko/Hasbro thought it was a good idea to drop a third of the mane six for a pair of background characters with a sentence of screentime between them.

I'd guess it's because Rarity and AJ aren't as "popular" as the other mane 4 ponies, Ditzy, and DJ.
Not saying that I am okay with that possible/likely reason - Rarity and AJ are my favorites of the mane 6 , and it always did upset me how they usually get the short end of the stick when it comes to merchandise. In a way, I've started "hating" RD and Dj Pon-3 (to an extent) because of it. I like Ditzy Doo a lot, but even I am getting tired of her being "everywhere" while other show ponies get ignored.

But yes, I do wish it was some other pony as the SDCC exclusive, not just a "popular fan favorite" one. Zecora, Discord, CMC, Big Mac, Luna/NMM, Chrysalis, ect.
Title: Re: SDCC pony revealed!

When I first saw the picture of her, I thought her glasses were speakers, and I thought oh neat she can play music. Which would be awesome! But sadly they are only dumb crystal things. That's a dumb move Hasbroken! $50 for a crystal encrusted FS pony. Oh yay...not!

I just bought a Littlest Petshop Online Harmony the Dancing Dog from a thriftstore for $1.99. One can plug an MP3 player into her foot and she is a speaker. She also dances, barks, sings and lights up. When I looked her up she retailed for $24.99 at a regular store. She is much cooler than this SDCC exclusive. And I like the DJ pony! :(

:drama::drama::drama::drama:

PS To whoever made Grumpy cat into an icon for use on the boards here, I give you a pile of lovely internet cookies!!

A Chrysalis done in this syle would be stunning!
I'm not really a fan of the DJ pony mainly because I'm making a plush of her and the glasses are a pain :P

I agree with those who have said a 30 year anniversary pony should be more about all the generations, not just the latest fad.

A set of one character done in all the styles would be fun. Someone who was there at the beginning, like Applejack.

I do like the mould but the random glittery bling all over her is weird. I second what people have said about her eyes looking like speakers - they look awful since they're not!
The glitter and gems on her legs, glasses and horn look stupid and randomly placed. The glitter-y mane is fine but I don't understand why they've made her look like she's walked through a glitter swamp.

A real shame, but hey, at least Funko seem to know what they're doing.

Hmmm, that amount of bling just seems random and tacky to me, and her hair just looks gross. I've seen customs so much better than this and am frankly more excited for the Funko version.
I still kind of want her but certainly not for this price, so I'm not gonna be cut up if I can't get one but I'll keep an eye out I guess. If she had been some kind of speaker for your MP3 player that would have been amazing.

Is it Fashion Style size? If she's bigger I'd get the price tag then but otherwise, nope it looks cheaply made.

Hmm... After sleeping on it I've decided that I do quite like her and I'm really looking forwards to seeing her in person. If, by some miracle, she turned out to be speakers then that would make her 64892146 more times awesome.

But yeah I am still disappointed for all the reasons that others have mentioned but I'm not surprised they've done something like this. Us collectors just have to face the facts that we're not Hasbro's biggest priority at the moment.

I'm assuming this is our Fair pony (if not, I'm sure we'll be getting something similar).  After the first couple of vinyls, I stopped picking them up.  They're expensive, big, with poor paint jobs, and I never liked the molded hair look anyway.  I just have no desire to even think about tracking down chase figures either.   I still have to this one, sadly.  I collect the Fair exclusives (for better or for worse) but this is the first one I actually feel disappointed in  :(

Ah, so what we have here is a "Golden Turd".

Definition courtesy of the urban dictionary; "Something that has excessive hyperbole and popularity, pawned off as being great and excellent, when, underneath all the hoopla and hype, is actually quite pathetic, obnoxious, overpraised, and downright overrated.".

Really, it's just a Design a Pony with $34 of bling and a Poundland led base. Okay, I'm done ranting (for today).

OK I'm trying to find something positive so I don't just stick it in a box when I get home....

~ At least it's not another Mane 6 (although I would've taken a brushable Mane 6 over a vinyl, or an art pony Mane 6 with lots of design creativity)

~ The glasses are molded on, not painted on.

~ The box lights up, so kudos on a creative packaging design.

~ It's not pink.

OK, I'm feeling a *wee* bit better. Still having a hard time with it being a non-brushable.   I wonder how this is being received by the bronies.

Hmmm.....now I am in a collecting dilemma. I don't really like her, and I am disgusted that they bedazzled a giant happy meal toy and have the nerve to charge $50 for her. However, I want to have all of the exclusives, so I would have to have her in my collection to be able to say that. I HATE molded hair. I think that's what I dislike most about her. I also really dislike that its not a new character. I also don't like to think about the fact that a bigger chunk of the price of the pony would be for the packaging. I don't need my pony's box to light up like a rave. I am SO glad I have gotten my hands on (well when she arrives in the mail) Black Tie Pinkie.....I guess I'll consider her my personal exclusive for this year. lol

All this being said.....I'll probably end up getting her. That need to have all of the exclusives will be too much in the end.

Which brings up something else that gets to me. As others have said, the only way to let Hasbro know that we are not happy is to simply not buy her. I agree with this....to a point. It does show hasbro that we don't like her, but I also fear the backlash on that. If no one were to buy her, the dopes at Hasbro might say, "Oh.....well, MLP exclusives no longer sell.....guess we don't have to make one for next year."

Sorry, but I really cannot stand her.

Plastic hair? Light up? Scores tacky to me :( *dodges fakies *

Here's a positive though; good size, and less people who want her, more for others= lower prices for those who do want her hopefully!

Maybe even a MB for that price!

I agree, vote no with your wallet.

I totally agree - and since I don't collect G4s I'm gonna take the $50 to the Fair to buy a pony I really want or need.

Well! Having read through all five pages, now I can share my own opinion.

I woke up, checked my RSS feeds over a cup of tea, and went ~absolutely berserk~ when I saw that the SDCC 2013 pony had been revealed. So. Much. Awesome! Look at all that awesome! Glitter! Crystals! Lights! Pretty! $50! Pony pony pony pony pony (continued for half an hour)

Now all my enthusiasm has calmed somewhat, I have to say I still love the look of her and I was devastated to find out that preorders are now about $160 at least on eBay. I thought to myself, this is probably the cheapest I'll ever see her, and I was incredibly sad. If anybody has preordered one of these with their MLP Fair ticket packages and would like to pass her on to someone who would give her the love and adoration she deserves- please let me know. I would love one of these so much.

(Also, I think some people are getting confused. Vinyl is her name. She's not actually made of it, like a Funko figure.) :P

I'm not even sure how to feel about this…. I came right over here after I saw the news to see what Arena members were saying.

I miss the art ponies for sure. They were unique, creative, and just for us. The Vinyl figure is cool and everything, but, molded hair? And this is meant to represent the 30th anniversary of the brand? We would have been happy with a set of glitter ponies, I think- with different characters from different gens. I guess I feel like this was a lazy move by Hasbro, made to please the bronies more than anyone else.

I actually loved the Grey Lady exclusive last year. I thought it was a cute idea, she's well made (if a tad overpriced), and had nice packaging. But I certainly didn't think it was going to start a trend of brony-centric exclusives. I'm really saddened that collectors have been kicked to the curb while the brony craze happens.

Not interested.  It's a lot of money for a character I feel is overdone.  I guess I don't see all the hype over her (even though I adore gray bubble pegasus).  And sheesh, $50?  For a bedazzled pony with non brushable hair?  I'll pass.

They are going to cater to those that buy. This is why I'm sure they canned the art ponies. They weren't selling. They needed to switch tactics and find something that would sell. Bubbles sold out and she sold out quick. They are trying again this year to have something that will sell out again.

I'm just not so sure on this one. I think the bling might turn more folks off then on as it appears to be on the arena.

The 10th Anniversary pony is way more awesome than this one. It had to be said.

I was gonna say, "WAIT, WE GOT A 10TH ANNIVERSARY PONY?! OMG WHERE IS SHE? IS SHE THE FAIR EXCLUSIVE?"

And then I remembered... oh, yeah, 20 years ago, huh...

Well at least the 10th anniversary pony wasn't an event exclusive and neither was the 25th anniversary Core 7 Collector set with the motivational words on them. I have hope that there will still be something awesome for the 30th anniversary but it will be something that anyone can get.

But (in my opinion) Gray Bubbles was unique and sold like hotcakes last year because the fans never thought she would see any sort of toy release - this was right after the controversy with her last year.  DJ has already had a brushable toy and will have a Funko figure.  I wanted Gray Bubbles because I thought she would be a one-shot (of course, now she has a Funko and will have a small brushable as well, which is ok with me).  I really like her toy as well with the lovely blonde mane and tail (mine has one of FS Twilight's barettes in).  If I would want a plastic haired DJ, I'd wait for the Funko release.  I have glitter if I felt so compelled to bedazzle her myself.

I don't think this will sell anywhere near what last year's pony sold.  I'm hearing an overwhelming "meh".

Especially for the cost!  Even casual pony fans wouldn't mind shelling out $20 for a special pony of a popular character.  But $50?? Nope.

What in the world?  I thought this was the Funko Exclusive pony at first.  This is from Hasbro?  Why is Hasbro doing the same thing as Funko now?

I don't like her.  This coming from someone who is a huge G4 fan and collects the molded hair Funko toys.  As for people saying "at least it's not one of the main 6", I actually would have vastly preferred it if it was.  A blinged out, glittery Rarity would have been really pretty, even with molded hair.

I used to really like Vinyl Scratch but her design isn't particularly exciting, detailed, or pretty and I'm tired of seeing her represented absolutely everywhere, especially at the expense if my two favorite (and I guess despised by the bronies, judging by the direction of FiM merchandise) main 6 characters, Rarity and Applejack.

This gets a big 'meh' from me.  Kinda glad I'm not going to the fair this year if this is the exclusive for it.

I agree with this.  I think Hasbro failed to take in all of the factors that made last years exclusive so popular.  Many of those reasons do not apply to this years exclusive and especially not at that price point.  Like others have said it might have been really cool if you could hook her up to your iPod and she bobbed her head to the music.  But not for some extra glitter and crystals.

Seriously? I can understand the financial gain for Hasbro by kissing up to the bronies.
But that is too big of a price and there's going to be at least three molded hair figures of her in the future.
Plus there's the 30th anniversary thing.
I think that if they did this only with a well known G1 pony such as Firefly, it would have been better
Or made her an MLP player speaker.

I wonder what the general reaction to her is on more Brony centric forums is.  Because in all honesty, I was expecting a g4 fan favourite, so that isn't my beef.  My problem is that you can already buy her, so how is she an exclusive figure? Glitter doesn't automatically make something extra special.

I kinda expected that.... Looks like Hasbro wins again.

Hasbro gets all the money and a sold out 'exclusive', the brony community gets to pat themselves on the back for how well the company listens to their demands, and the long-time collectors get to grumble and keep our money in our pockets...

A win-win situation for everyone except the long time collectors. As usual.

A few people do... most reactions seem to be "that looks sort of weird" or "lol 'adult collectible'." It's not overtly negative, but nor is it a slam dunk by any means.

It doesn't hurt that bronies tend to have little to no idea of what's already been announced (or even found in stores). Every time there's a new photo of the Elements of Harmony blindbag Fluttershy, for example, a new batch of people get surprised. Once photos do come out of the Funko figure, a lot of people are going to make the comparison for themselves instead of thinking this is the first time any figure ever made has had molded hair.

sadly, that's what I see as well Dragonflitter

in the past Hasbro would occasionally listen to long-time collectors, but only to a degree and would usually put their own spin on it so that we were left going well, *technically* that's what we asked for, but not really

since FiM, it seems like Hasbro has been bending over backwards for the bronies and practically ignoring the collectors. The Fair is still dominated by collectors of G1-G3 (though most of us love G4s just as much), and Hasbro should have noticed that there was a HUGE exodus after last year's exclusive sold out. Those people were not there to support Hasbro or MLP; they just wanted a certain gray pony

Yeah, it seems to be either "OmG, must have her!! Awesome SDCC exclusive!" or "Eh, i'll wait for the Funko version / I can get a more show accurate custom figure for that price or cheaper / adult collectible? Lol ." from what I've read on EqD.

This is exactly how I feel. I like her a lot but not at that price and certainly not at any kind of inflated after market price. I can just get the Funko one and add glitter for much less. I would have preferred a brushable FS DJ Pon3 like last year's Bubble Butt at the same price as last year.

Actually- the reaction seems pretty lukewarm to me.  People like her, many people love her, but even so- are not going to buy her because she is $50.  I'm not seeing even a fraction of the reaction that last year's pony got.

I actually think there will be a lot of these around after the SDCC.  I was looking on ebay and the prices for pre-sales are already dropping- there are NONE sold yet.

Do you know what else is weird about her as a release?

It almost implies she wont ever get a fashion style release...the joy of the art ponies and even of Miss Drama herself last year was that these were not ponies which were going to turn up in store. These were special ponies which would appeal to an adult collector and who would never be on shelves.

By making a character who is in your show into an exclusive you, in theory, preclude yourself from releasing her in that way in the future in regular retail.

The exception perhaps being that maybe that's why her hair is moulded - so that if they release her again she will be brushable.
Title: Re: SDCC pony revealed!
Post by: Violet CLM on June 06, 2013, 05:35:20 PM
I dunno... very few ponies get fashion style releases period, so that's not a big deal. And drama pony is getting a standard brushable soon, and her hair wasn't molded, and Pon-3's already had one.

After reading all 20 pages of comments and considering them carefully, some of the thoughts on Dj are really fair, but I'd urge most of you to hold off final judgment until you see her in person.  Here's why- and a few other thoughts:

I agree- it would have been nice to see this exclusive with brushable hair, but then she had a brushable release already and styling brushable hair to look show accurate on this one would have been a nightmare.  While Dj's been a 'Brony' favorite, there are so many 'mane 6' ponies and items- it really is nice to see a different pony getting some attention, and my hope is she might gain a minor role in future episodes.  I would have liked to have seen Hasbro include a matching DJ pin or lanyard for the cost, but then Swarovski crystals are very expensive.  Speaking from an artist's viewpoint, this pony clearly wasn't designed to be removed from the box (and most collectors don't debox anymore anyways).  The background on the box shows a disco room- and those little crystal embellishments are going to light up and sparkle more than that picture can show- and the effects should be beautiful.  If you've ever been roller-skating under a prismatic disco ball, the people and the floor fill with little sparkles which are really enchanting.  No online picture can show that too well- or hardly at all.

As for the art ponies-  I'm actually very glad Hasbro has changed them.  I completely loved the peacock one, and the ocean is one of my most favorite, but as for the more macabre pony and superhero ones- not at all. It is a bit surprising that Hasbro didn't do anything cross-gen for the 30th, and disappointing too, but then FiM has become the main selling force for them.  Anyways, I know I'm in the vast minority at the moment- at least from those that've spoken up, but Dj looks like she'll be marvelous in person and I'm looking forward to her.

Which art pony is the "more macabre"?  Do you mean the blue and black one?  (I love her!)

The High-res image just makes me not want her even more... the random glitter on the feet and rhinestone placement just makes me go 'Bleh'

also I will never see her in person because I can't got to SDCC :(

I dunno... very few ponies get fashion style releases period, so that's not a big deal. And drama pony is getting a standard brushable soon, and her hair wasn't molded, and Pon-3's already had one.

But that in itself is disappointing - I love the FS size and by saying very few get that we are restricting ourselves to simply continual main 6 + princesses releases of these over and over and over and over again. *shrug* more a depressing thought about the line in general that anything which is not the main 6 + FS size is only going to exist if its an exclusive.

I love Swarovski, but the light up box might end up driving me nuts when it eventually stops working. I would have preferred a holographic design.

I agree, as a complete package - to stay in the display box, I think it works, and to me the price tag isn't an issue. As said the crystals will drive the price up and are aimed to add quality, rather than just using diamante/plastic gems. And with the light up box/disco feel I think everything works together really well. Perhaps sparkles just need to be seen in real life?

I do agree that the battery thing will be annoying, but do we know whether they will be replaceable?

Nothing will ever satisfy everyone unfortunately and it may well be annoying that things are being catered towards newer fans, but they are part of the fan base, and do help to drive sales and keep MLP in the limelight.
Many of us could easily fill our pony needs by buying second hand G1 - 3 without the need for the current gen. Of course lots us us buy those too, but the demand from other fan areas helps keep new things coming  :)

And really... If I were at SDCC (or fair if it's the fair pony) I would buy her in a heartbeat but I'm rather far away :yikes:  :P  But if sales of her are slow the resales hopefully won't be in Bubbles territory so I might stand a chance of getting one

You know, since DJ is a pony about music they should have had a music element about her.  Some people had mentioned turning her into an ipod speaker or something.  That would have made sense.  For $50 that would have made more sense actually.

Not sure what to think myself! It's cute and all, but it doesn't feel like an exclusive for SDCC. Maybe like Toys R' Us or something, but that's it. :P

I have a friend that goes to SDCC every year and he picks up my exclusives for me. A few years ago I had him pick up a Disney Pixar Cars exclusive that was in a light up box. My Cars exclusive has replaceable batteries. I would be surprised if DJ does not.

The more I think about it, the more I hope that DJ is the Fair pony......

Why?

Because if she is the Fair pony I will finally have something worth trading for SDCC :muffin: Pony. My plan with last year's exclusive was to wait until this whole FIM craze was over and Ebay is flooded with her. But if I can trade DJ for :muffin: Pony then I don't have to wait.  ^.^

They could have even made the box have a light up speaker that changes colors to the music.

I'm just glad the exclusive is something that if I really want it I can do it myself. If it was the clear glitters I would have been gutted. Now I can at least hope for a regular release for them.

She is nicely made, and the box is really cool; but I'm not quite sure about the crystals on her glasses and horn...

I'm glad she's meh, because I don't bother with exclusives because they are too expensive and hard to find.

Anyway I already have the fan favorites pack DJ and like her better because she has brushable hair and is 'normal' pony sized, so she fits with the rest of the G4s that I have.

Lol, I also agree with the majority.  I'm kind of glad she's not something I like. I'm still after :muffin: Pony after all.

Disappointed. Absolutely nothing to do with a 30th anniversary. The glitter everywhere just looks tacky.

Does anyone see extra crystals in the glasses lens? I don't think it makes it look any better though.

Honestly, light-up box seems kinda... gimmicky to me. It's kinda cool, but I would much rather the box actually have something to do with music or DJing or a more elaborate display instead of this.

Although I like Fashion Style sized ponies, all these things plus the price-tag make it seem a no-no for me this year.

I have a friend who wants this pretty badly, but isn't going to SDCC... what would be her best bet of getting one?

Even if she was going her best bet is keeping an eye on ebay.  Buying things from the hasbro booth is painful.

The more I look at her, the more I just don't have any interest... she just looks so tacky like others have said... definitely saving me some money this summer.
