Did a MLP cartoon first get you interested in My Little Ponies?
« on: January 18, 2013, 10:35:13 PM »
I was thinking back to my own childhood in the 80s, and really I loved My Little Ponies before I ever knew there was a cartoon.   The cartoon was nice and all that, but it was just the fact that they were rainbow-colored magical intelligent fantasy horses that drew me in.

What was it like for you?  How did you first get into MLP? Not interested as a "collector" or a "fan", but interested at all.    Do you remember when you first became aware of MLP?   The first time I saw a My Little Pony was when my grandma sent me one through the mail as a birthday gift when I was five or six years old.  I had never seen them in commercials or shows or real life before.  I was completely blown away.

(In this poll, both "MLP & Friends" and "MLP Tales" are considered G1 cartoons.  There is no G2 cartoon, which is why they don't have that option.  I forgot G3.5, so just consider it part of G3.)

Admittedly I was far too young to recall this, but I'm pretty sure I got ponies (G1) before I got interested in the show. I don't remember the show at all, even though again, I was just too young to remember back then.

Nope.  G1 was my gen.  I did watch the cartoon, and I loved seeing the ponies I owned in it, but I owned heaps before I even saw an eppisode.

Admittingly, the show that got me fully hooked on MLP was Tales. It fitted right into the blank space that was left behind by Arthur after the local TV station cancelled the show.

I'm sort of a young-ish fan of the original G1 series... I grew up on the old G1 cartoons, but only when they were on rerun on TV in 1994, and I was a toddler at the time. There were no pony toys to lure me in or any of my other friends who really watched it, so the show was the only way for me

FiM got me into MLP in general...so I'd say Hasbro is doing their job. :)

I actually don't remember  I know the show influenced which ponies I wanted. I would have LOVED to have a Buttons or Magic Star :) I adored my Baby Lickety Split and I made my Whizzer talk fast just like in the cartoon  My favorite ponies seemed to be the ones on the cartoon :)

Good question!  I think I got my first pony when I was 2 and absolutely adored it. I am not sure if I was watching the show then. So I think it was toys first and then cartoon. When I was 3 or 4 I must have watched it a lot with my dad because my dad still sings the theme song  :P I was also super in to Thundercats at that point in time. Love those 80s cartoons!

I would say MLP FiM got me more into the collecting mood. Especially due to having money to spend now, yay. Now I can afford all of those ponies I was super jealous of that my friends had  :P And G4's are so small and easy to collect.

I started with the show. It was a normal and boring public holiday and mum was in the kitchen washing. I stuck myself to the TV as usual. Then Rescue At Midnight Castle flashed on TV, and Firefly became my all time favourite cartoon character then. I would switch on the TV at the same time every morning hoping to catch ponies on TV again, but nope.

My uncle still stayed with us in the 80s, and one night after work, he popped by the video rental and brought home guess-you-know-what!!! Basically I watch the tape on repeat for many times a day. I don't even think my uncle bothered to return the tape lol

As for G3s, I think it was the cartoons that killed all interest I have for ponies.

My Granny was to blame for my pony obsession  , bought me Baby Yoyo and my sister Baby Wiggles when I was about 6 years old. After that as I hooked!

When satellite first came out there was 'The Childrens Channel' (anyone remember this?) which ran from 8am to 3pm and My Little Pony was aired nearly every morning so my dad would tape it for me to watch when I got home from school ^.^

The show made me desperately want Paradise but I could not find her at any carboot sale I went to, thankfully I own her now :)

Growing up, I was never really interested in My Little Pony.  I was more into Sindy and Keypers.  It was the FiM show which got me really into My Little Pony and collecting.  At first it was only the G4 ponies, but now I have the beginnings of a G1 and G3 collection - for which I blame the Arena  :P

We didn't have a TV until I was much older, so it was all about the colorful, brushable horse-shaped plastic for me!  Besides, I had a pony in my hands from the age of 2.5/3...
