I use alicorn, I've never heard about this horn of a unicorn stuff before so that sounds strange to me, haha... Unipeg makes more obvious sense, but I don't like it as much, and I don't like the sound of pegacorn at all.

Piers Anthony has been referred to them as Alicorns in pretty much all of his books since the 70's.

Ala =Latin for wings.
Corn =Latin for horn

so put them together - Alicorn =Winged horn simple as that.

I've always referred to myself as an Alicorn - albeit a crazy one.

Well as someone already mentioned, it should be Alacorn then shouldn't it? :P

Yeah, was wondering that too.
The sometimes questionable internet tells me "Ali" means "other".  As used in "alibi" or "alias".
So alicorn is like..."other horn"? I think i better leave this to the language experts. XP

Makes me wish I paied more attention that year in school when I took latin XD But that does raise a good point :P

Alacorn or the proper Alacourn I can buy, cuz that is again two words put together to form one in order to explain something. But Alicorn never made sense to me and even now it seems to be very debatebale XD

eh, I've always called them pegacorns, and I'm sticking to it (not really a fan of G4 telling me what to call things)

I think "pegacorn" or "unipeg" sounds clunky and ugly.  Alicorn sounds prettier.  I always called them "winged unicorns" but I use alicorn now. Had nothing to do with G4, just what I heard people calling the winged unicorns and I liked it.  Never heard anything about "what a unicorn horn is made of".

'Unipeg' makes me think of a clothes peg with a horn. XD

Alicorn is a wonderful sounding word. I'd use that when speaking about them, but upon sight would recognise said creature as a winged unicorn.

See for me Alicorn sounds awful.  I associate "Ali" with the name Al and specifically male names that Al is short for.  Therefore it just sounds wrong to me.  Like it is the name of some big burly guy like on Tool Time, or a big scary vicious dog, or something of the night, or some kind of dark creature instead of the creature of light that a unicorn/Pegasus is usually.

So, I think alicorn sounds bad like it should either be someones name, or it is the horn material, while unipeg and pegacorn sound fine to my ears.

Winged Unicorn seems to be the only truly correct name everyone likes and can agree on.  :)

I'd never heard of Alicorn before G4, it's a word that doesn't really *mean* anything to me (I hadn't heard that it meant the horn substance either).

I've mostly gone with Pegacorn, simply because in my little brain Unipeg sounds like something with one leg. I know that's not logical, but that's how my brain works. I think the technical term should be Winged Unicorn, really.

Interesting note- one of the sites that popped up when I googled "Alicorn" said there's a ruby at the base of the horn called a carbuncle. Now I'm SURE that is something else, and I would not want one stuck to my head! *pirate voice* "D'ar, all me power comes from carbuncles!"

Yeah, in the Narnia books Lewis writes about precious carbuncles and one of the characters even uses it as an endearment. Threw me completely. I genuinely thought it was sarcasm to start with!

Words don't have to be spelled exactly the same as the words they are derived from, or else they would end up being the same word.  Also, I don't think ali/alius/alibi etc meaning other is unrelated to the word alas for wings, although I have been out of Latin class for a few years now so I could be wrong.

The word certainly has Latin roots, but I think I think the word can be explained by the Italian language as well.

I love this word. It sums up the features of a unicorn and pegasus, and even sounds nice. To me it is a portmanteau of two Italian(or Latin as mentioned by other people) words:
"ali" meaning wings and "corno" meaning horn.

Ali+corno = alicorno. Drop the o, and we have Alicorn.

I don't know who came up with the word though, but I like how they thought of languages (I am Latin crazy)  :lol:
