Where have all the Unipegs gone? They became Alicorns!
« on: July 24, 2012, 07:07:28 PM »
Does anyone out there call them Unipegs and not Alicorns?   Or am I the only one?    And how did Alicorn come to mean winged unicorn anyway?   I thought it was the material the horn was made of.  It had nothing to do with wings. So how did it become the standard?

I have no idea, and I've been wondering the same thing! I call them pegacorns or winged unicorns usually.
I think alicorn came about during the g4 craze, but I'm not sure. :P

I'm pretty sure they came up with the alicorn thing when G4:FiM came about. I first heard it when I first seen Princess Celestia.
I've always called them unipegs!

to quote the my little pony fan labor wiki: "The word in its new sense is said to be derived of Latin "ala" meaning "wing", and "cornu" meaning "horn", however no sources are cited for this claim."

i still call them alicorns. i think pegicorn or unipeg are things i would say if  i mess up a word. they sound awfully silly too. besides, names for real animals (and things in general) differ from person, for example: killer whale and orca. they're the same thing, just different titles.

I've always called them winged unicorns. Anything else just sounds silly in my opinion. Alicorn just means the horn, to me.

alicorn is a nicer sounding word, I actually like it. But I just call then flying unicorns or winged unicorns. I too wonder about where "alicorn" comes from, I know it only means the horn of the unicorn (thanks wikipedia!).

I use Unipeg the most but pegacorn is equally good and winged unicorn works perfectly, but everytime I hear "alicorn" I feel like it is just not right because it is the horn material.

I did look up ala and it is winged in Latin but then shouldn't it be "alacorn"?

I've known them as alicorns for well over a decade, so, no, the definition has nothing to do with the g4 line of MLP. They've been called alicorns outside of MLP for quite awhile.

In fact, until just a couple years ago, I'd never heard the term alicorn to specifically refer to the material of a unicorn's horn and was very confused before I realized what they were getting at. I think it was in an old '80s movie that was on tv.

Interesting!  Thanks Will!  I wonder which definition came first.
