Maybe the pink is just a stain from something else and not the original dye? So the whole thing faded/got bleached, but it also picked up a stain?

Yeah; I'm thinking it either got faded like Chrissytree mentioned (with either general wear or sunfading), or it was washed like mlp4me mentioned; and it either picked up the magenta stains later (possibly from the good cape that was in there with it?) or those parts never washed out at all.

I wonder if it would be a waste of a Pony Royal cape to find a baity one and put it in the washer on a gentle cycle, just to see what would happen.

I don't know that just washing it would do that...I'm pretty sure I've hand washed one or two of the capes and they didn't fade at all. I know a washing machine isn't as gentle, but still...

Ah-ha another one has finally shown up!

I also own a white pony royal cape which is PURE white, no patches on it. The threads however are still pink - we did have a thread about it when I first got it about 10/11 years ago and I seem to recall the consenus was that it may have been a factory error/prototype. The fabric is still soft and shiny, it doesn't honestly feel like it's been bleached or washed and the silver trim is still in good nick. I'd get pics but my ponies are all boxed up :(

Very interesting! And I see you also live in the UK, like Chrissytree, whose cape from childhood has some white spots. Interesting that yours is pure white! It sounds like both mine and Chrissytree's have at least some magenta on them.

I wonder if UK Pony Royal capes, then (assuming this white cape could be from the UK),

1) were not colorfast and somehow faded or lost their magenta color sometimes; or
2) had a white factory batch made, along the lines of Lady Guinevere's Party Time variant
3) (or both)

Curiouser and curiouser!

Did your cape come from the UK?

Just to add my two cents about this, although ponywear isn't my strongest area of knowledge, admittedly - I'm not aware of a colour variation on that outfit here. I would suggest it could've been a washing accident with detergent that didn't take to the fabric, but that's only a guess. I know some odd variants of outfits (like the one Lady G photographed) have appeared here, but they tend to be variations on exclusively UK outfits/versions of outfits. Royal Pony is the same outfit in the US and the UK releases, just the name is different.

Not that it's impossible that it's a rare variation from a batch that somehow went wrong of course - but if it was a proper release variation from over here, I think we'd have seen more than a couple in 30+ years.

I seem to remember that my cape did come from within the UK. I got it in a batch of accessories and it was the first thing that caught my eye. I think Taffeta's probably right in that it's either a batch gone wrong or a prototype - this is the first time since getting mine I've heard any mention of another so that's a good ten years there. It's an utterly gorgeous variant though.

And aha! I knew I might have some (old) photos somewhere! This is mine

The use of the pink thread makes me disinclined to believe it'd be a prototype - could be a batch of badly dyed fabric that wasn't as colorfast as it should have been, perhaps.  Sort of like our 'White Windy', or fading pink hair.

I agree. While I'm not really convinced of this as an actual variation, I do think it looks a lot better in this colour scheme than the original pink and white :)

Yeah, whether it's a variant, error, or just faded, it's very pretty.

Yeah, mine's the same way -- it doesn't strike me as a bleach or washing accident; I think if it were bleach, the white would be spottier, and if it were washing, the fabric wouldn't be as pure white as it is (except in those two places). And it just seems like it would be stiffer and rattier. I'm thinking that perhaps, like Chrissytree's, the cape got this way from play or age somehow. I think that it must be that and not a factory variation (mostly because of the magenta spots on it; they're the right color, after all).

That said, I'm not sure about yours, Queen Gusty; I would personally assume the play or age theory for it, but yours is completely white, unlike mine and Chrissytree's, and even looks whiter than mine. Very pretty, whatever is the cause. :) Maybe someday there will be a definite consensus.

Here's pics of the one I have. It reeeeeeks of vinegar. It is not original to me. But I don't think that particular smell is from storage, none of the ponies or other items I got with it smelled like that.
