White Pony Royal cape?
« on: January 03, 2016, 08:13:54 PM »
Was there ever an alternate Pony Royal cape? I got a group of ponies from my mom for Christmas, including a ton of accessories; the lot was from Indiana, but the cape could be from a non-U.S. location, as there was a Schooltime Pony bag in the lot and the lot looks to me like it belonged to a collector (there were lots of duplicates, more than most little girls would have).

Here are some shots of the cape alone and next to a correctly-colored magenta cape that was also in the lot. As you can see, there is one magenta spot on the back and a magenta area near the neck, but in all other places the magenta is not there. I checked the silver trim and how they were sewn and they are identical. Magenta thread was used on each. I think it's possible that this was just faded somehow, but it's strange that it's such an even fade -- even in the cracks, with the exception of the area on the neck, it's white, and then the random magenta spot is there, both on the front and back, like it bled into it. :wonder: Whatever it may be, I think it's pretty cool!

The thread color suggests this was possibly a cleaning accident - maybe it ran into some bleach, and the remaining pink area is where the stain was that was originally trying to be removed?  Never seen a white variant of this Pony Wear.

Wow, that's interesting . . . and beautiful!

Would an accident with bleach do that?  It seems strange that it would be so even, though.  Unless a parent bleached it intentionally??

But the thread isn't bleached. Interesting... Will continue to watch to see how this progresses!

It's gorgeous either way! I have a deep burgamdy one that is identical to the original that I keep, I assume it came from another line.. How cool would it be to have a snow queen with yours! Good luck finding out more  :)

That is gorgeous.  :)

Now I'm curious and will be watching to see if any information pops up on it.

I've never seen that before, but I love it!

Any chance the fabric was replaced and the silver lace sewn back on?

Very curious! It's not one I've seen before, but I do have this other ponywear variation, that also uses the original thread/ribbon colour, but a major difference for another part.

My original cape from childhood has some patches of white on it actually. I used it a lot and it went everywhere with Blossom so it might have been wear or sunfading. I think it's a patch on the middle of the back and some streaks running along the creases.
Mine was from the UK. Perhaps some aren't colourfast?

That's what I'm wondering, too! If it was bleached or altered in some way (possibly by a customizer) I just wonder why they left the two magenta areas; why in every nook and cranny the material is white; and why the thread is still pink. I think the thread would bleach along with the rest of the material, right? It could be a custom project of some kind, but I wonder why they would leave the obvious spots? A mistake they couldn't fix?

Very interesting! Do you have any pictures of yours? I wonder if possibly the magenta on my cape wore/faded away somehow?

That's really interesting, too! I've had the thought that the factory ran out of the correct material or something, although I still wonder about those magenta spots.

I've posted some more pictures below so that you can see close-ups and under the fur and stitching (my fingers are in it, which I hate doing, but it was the only way ).

In this one most of the magenta thread is hidden under the fur, but this part is visible.

The thread color does not actually indicate if the fabric was bleached or not. The thread can be and probably is of different fiber than the fabric and therefore can have different properties when it comes to things like holding color so I would not get fixated on that. Anyway it looks really cool in white, what a mystery!  :)

But thread is usually cotton, and we all know how well cotton takes to dye/bleach,  I would think the cotton thread would dye or bleach faster than the satin like fabric of the actual cape. Especially something with that blue base in color. But maybe not?

I'm puzzled by this. I've seen lamé and similar fabrics metallic wear off to reveal silver, but never a pearly white. And I do not own the cape so I can tell what type of fabric it's made of.

Maybe the pink is just a stain from something else and not the original dye? So the whole thing faded/got bleached, but it also picked up a stain?

I have a cape that's faded out just like that as well. I would fetch a guess that it's been washed.
