Any Ferret lovers out there??
« on: June 02, 2015, 11:41:42 AM »
So I now have a ferret living with me.  He's an albino male called Maester and is under a year old. He used to belong to my step daughter but since her and her mum have had *ahem* accommodation issues, he is living with me and her dad until its sorted out. (At this point, I would venture a guess that he's gonna be a permenant member of our household...)

Here he is meeting my cat Honey. She is 19 years old and not the friendliest of kittys. She does hiss when Maester gets nose to nose but she doesn't get physical with him.  Usually she retreats to the windowsill when he is loose (we let him out of his cage 3-4 times a day for a little socialisation and excercise).  On the odd occasion when she is on the floor at the same time, Maester will chase her looking to play, sadly he has not got the hint that she does not want to play!!

I have to admit I am getting more and more attached to him and fond of ferrets in general. Having prepared myself for a nipping nightmare, I have been pleasantly surprised by this little carpet shark, its clear that my step daughter and the girl who had Maester before her looked after him very well

So, who else here has ferrets? Any tips for a beginner??

Haha, "carpet shark." What a cutie!

I work at a pet store and had a nice conversation with a young women who brought one in in a pet tote bag. I held him, and he was the most serene ferret I've ever seen. Since then, I've been thinking about ferrets and researching them for perhaps a future furbaby.
I've got one older kitty, a greyhound, two bearded dragons and a leopard gecko. The grey gets along pretty well with small animals. If anyone has any tips for beginners, I'm all ears as well!  :nerdy:  I've got another one: how bout furnoodle?

Meeeee!  I love ferrets!

How cute is Maester?! :P

Lala is correct, I saw "ferret" in the title and just HAD to come post here!  My ferret's name is Furret and he's just over a year old.  We've had him for a year now and he sure is a handful, but I love the little guy.  My fiance and I plan on getting a second ferret after we move into our new house at the end of this month, because it's clear that poor Furret wants a buddy to play with.  I've been told that ferrets work best in pairs or groups, because they love the interaction.  I'm sure that goes for interaction with other animals, as well.

Here's my furbaby though, I love him!  This was taken on his birthday and is absolutely my favorite picture of him.

It's true that ferrets love nipping and biting, but only because that's how they have to get your attention.  Whenever I have Furret out, he'll climb on the bed and bite at my toes if I'm not paying attention to him.  Lately he's been licking me all over my face and ears, and if I push him away even a little, he'll just waltz back up to me and go at it again.

It's definitely great that you have the ferret out for most of the day, but they also like to sleep a lot (up to 18 hours!) so if he disappears and finds a corner to sleep in, let him go.  My ferret has his own corner in our bedroom where we have a pile of blankets.  He likes to sneak over there to catch some z's.  He has also taken food out of his cage and hidden it around our room, another totally normal thing for a ferret to do.

Not sure if you've seen it in action, but "war dancing" is perhaps the funniest thing ever.  Furret does that and he hits the walls, knocks things over, etc. all because he's so excited.  Oh, and ferrets love old socks and bubblewrap.  Those can usually distract my ferret for a good chunk of time.

My BFF HavACrumpet452 (who is a member here) has two of them. She used to have five! Sadly she lost  a boy and two girls over the last year or so, they were quite lovely. I'll have to bug her to post some pics of them. They're quite rambunctious! It's hilarious when you put them in a cloth sack to dry off...

Aww Moonbeam, Furret is adorable

Maester has a bit of a foot fetish thing, loves nibbling toes, snuffling in boots and trainers!!  He has a talent for messing about on laptops too!!  He ran across my fella's laptop the other night and somehow managed to Ctrl Alt something which made the screen flip sideways!!!  Took Ray ages to work out how to put it right LOL!!!!

He also keeps running off with my blind bag ponies.  I'll buy a couple here and there, open them and leave them on the coffee table waiting to be logged and put away, I found Minty behind the sofa....... :ninja:

I love the cute little noises he makes though!! All those little wiffly noises he makes when snuffling around the room, then the chittering noise he does when he's running and playing!!  Just adorable  :lovey:

Yes, oh my goodness ferrets make the cutest noises!  Furret also has a foot fetish thing going on.  He'll run off with my socks after I take them off and we can't leave our shoes out in the open, otherwise he'll crawl in them and start scratching away.  I gave him my old winter boots a few months ago and my fiancé let him have his old work shoes.  We don't get rid of socks anymore because they're the perfect toy for him.

Another awesome toy we've found is a mouse that squeaks and has eyes that light up, it sits on the end of a stretchy rope that's tied to a stick.  Whenever Furret is off doing something he shouldn't, I'll just grab the toy and wave it around. He comes running and then he'll drag it off into a corner while making those cute noises.

Maester bath time by Tina Sallis, on Flickr

Aww Maester has already gone around acquiring all the cats toys that she doesn't play with!!  He seems to have a fondness for her santa hat, an old teddy dog toy and his small hair brush, he carries them around all the time LOL!!  I have to keep my blind bag ponies away otherwise he'll pinch those!!

And I love that little joggy trot he does when he's running from one end of the living room to the other <3

Aww ... He's so cute. When I was a kid, I has two ferrets: Finster, a male sable, who my Dad got from a coworker; and Rue, a female sable, who we got from my cousins' neighbors who were unable to take care of her. Finster liked to sleep in a hammock we made from a small towel, and I seem to remember him sleeping in a wooden bowl, too. He loved to hide random objects, like socks and carrots, under a chair. That poor little thing ... we dressed him in doll clothes, colored his fur with markers, put him in the refrigerator, got gum stuck in his fur and had to give him a haircut. Rue was older, and a bit grouchy. She would nip our fingers, but she would latch on. I don't remember much else about her, really.

We honestly didn't know a lot about ferrets ourselves, so I don't have much advice. If you take him outside, be very careful. We took Finster on a leash, but he would slip out and find small spaces to hide in. I remember several times when we had to just wait him out, but he came out eventually. A snug fitting harness may be a good idea if you want to take him out.

A snug fitting harness is a great idea for taking him outside!  Otherwise he'll probably just run away, and ferrets are fast (as I'm sure you know).  Let him dig around in some dirt for a bit.  One time Furret dug a hole next to our porch and just sat in it when he was done.  He's a weirdo...

Do you have treats for your little guy?  I like to keep them handy as positive reinforcement whenever Furret uses the litter pan or goes into the cage to do his business.  He has a bad habit of just running over to the door and pooping in the corner if I'm not looking. >_<

We're a little unsure about treats at the moment.  He doesn't seem to eat much in the way of meat, seems he's been raised on ferret kibbles all his life.  We'll slip him the occasional kitty treat (when Honeys not looking LOL) but that's about it really. He has been tried on raw and cooked meat but doesn't really take to it!

He has a harness and leash, but wriggles out of it easily, we may get a smaller fitting one!!  I'd love to take him out in the garden!!  He can have a sniff at the chickens :D

I have a question about ferrets someone might be able to help clear up! So when I was little my mom looked into getting me and my sister a silver ferret. My mom was reading that even if you remove the scent glands they still stink? Hmmm but I was reading their food may actually make them get stinky if it contains fish oils, making the cage stink and their poos stink. I know if you give them baths every few days they stink less. So is it a myth that ferrets will always stink? My friends ferret doesnt stink but I already asked hom this question and he wont answer back! xD I would like to know the facts!!! I have a hard time trusting the interweb for pet care sheets. Husband says even though he has allergies he wants a furry energic animal- either a ferret, fennec fox, or hypoallergenic cat.
