This is a totally unsubstantiated musing, but I imagine customising was not such a big thing in the early days as it is now. I only even became aware you can change a pony or doll's hair within the last couple of years. If the pony's earliest known history was 1997, we're talking days before the internet. There wasn't a big shared knowledge base around.
And since I was online in 97 and there was already a community online before me, that rules out no net in 97 for ponies Xd. I did my first trade in 1997, and that trader, who I got to know well, told me about her plan to commission custom versions of an unmade baby pony even then.
Hasbro had also planned to originally release satin and lace in collector pose too. We see her in cp pose in the catalogues.
@Daffodil, nobody has suggested it impossible for a CP Sundance concept, nor assumed it must come after the shy pose was decided. The reason that discussion came about was a question of her being a concept idea FOR THE UK, which is entirely different, since UK production was a year behind US production. It was in response to the suggestion that a UK insert drawing showed her in cp pose, which would have dated her to 2 years AFTER shy pose Sundance came out in the US and ONE year after she had already come out here.I know I said much earlier in this discussion that if Sundance is real, she logically must have come from the time before Sundance was issued and might have been one of a number of options...but that it must have been in the US because, althoughthe UK did make variations, the second release of Sundance here is the one WITHOUT UK exclusive stuff xD. It came with Country Jamboree.
I feel like this maybe an advanced prototype for Sundance but they changed their minds about pose. This pony could pre date shy pose Sundance. And we all know ponies travel. Nirvanas have been found in the US at thrift stores and that weirdo plum Posey (believed to be a Vene) found at a garage sale in Canada. It's quite possible that this pony moved with a family to the UK or given as a gift. So many scenarios...just because Ember got her from someone in the UK doesn't mean she came from there don't forget
How about birthday pony in trotting pose. Hasbro must have changed their minds last minute there. I must say i much prefer her in trotting pose. Much prettier.
Has anyone considered taking the head off of an Alternate January Carnation and seeing if it has the same numbers on the inside of it's neck..? I know next to nothing about prototype ponies (aka I knew nothing before reading this thread ) but she does look genuine to me... the paint job and the way you've described her feeling. princessluna11706, I hope you hear back from Kirk soon! Hopefully it will help shed some light on this mystery.
