The Last Unicorn: The Broadway Musical!

Yes, that's really happening! Peter Beagle's newsletter came out yesterday, and it said:

Some of you already read about this in Playbill, or saw the news online (here's the link).

Our heads explode just thinking about it — after years of talks we're actually going ahead with producing an immersive Broadway-bound musical of The Last Unicorn! For lifelong theater-geek Peter this is a dream come true (and even cooler, he's going to be collaborating on the book and lyrics).

For early details, check out the Playbill article. And if you can get to New York this Sunday night, buy a ticket and join us at the 92nd Street Y for the big public announcement of the project. Peter will be joined by producers Josh Duhamel (yes, that Josh Duhamel), Lauren Sands, and Connor Cochran, plus book collaborator Ed Rutherford, and there may even be a long-distance contribution by co-producer Fergie (who has been an ardent Last Unicorn fan since she was 8 years old, so working on this musical is a dream come true for her as well). We're going to be making some history with this one, and we'd love to share it with as many of you as possible right at the start.

Can you imagine if the unicorn was played like the horse in War Horse? Striking white with fully black-clad puppeteers? *Sigh* Yes, I would go abroad to see that!

As much as I LOVE The Last Unicorn, I'll stick with the original garish Mia Farrow and Jeff Bridges renditions... LOL. Only America can sing this soundtrack in my eyes as well.

I want to be excited about this, but...Fergie. Ugh.

Normally I'd be like, "Fergie, ugh," too, but she was actually pretty good in the movie musical "Nine" (which wasn't that great of a movie, but her part was good!). But I think Fergie is just throwing some money into the project, not actually acting or singing. Probably.

And I actually hadn't thought about how they didn't mention America at all. I guess they would be writing all new music and not using the America songs. They'd at least have to use the theme song, though -- how could they not?
