"a pony with wings and a horn" :P
no, really. as a kid I don't remember ever using the terms "pegasus" or "unicorn" at all, I always referred to ponies with such attributes as "winged pony" or "horned pony".
later I did start to use the term "unicorn", but pegasi remained "winged ponies" up until today. and alicorns are still "ponies with wings and horns". that's just what comes naturally to me ^.^

I'm afraid I saw them in FIM first, and everyone (that I saw) was calling them alicorns before FIM itself was using the name.  Everyone was matter of factually stating that they were called alicorns, so in my limited knowledge I took that as fact.

I later heard various meaning for the word "alicorn" and I think one of them was that type of pony.  My friend has stated alicorn to be the "incorrect term" and has described them as "winged unicorns", but as far as I know uses alicorn in the show (we never really discussed it, even though we have discussed alicorns themselves).

Even though it may be incorrect, I doubt that FIM was the first to use "alicorn" in this context, but it's hard to determine.

I personally like alicorn because it acknolleges the fact that it is a seperate entity, regardless of having the attributes of the other three types. At least I think that is what they have.

EDIT: No offense, but shouldn't there be an option on the poll for those who always called them alicorns?
I will confess to being a brony, but I assure you that the things you may not like about them do not apply to me, I mostly keep the fandom name due to nostaligia, but I do genuinely love MLP as a whole, not just FIM, and not just the popularity of FIM - I genuinely love the show (and all the others)

I've been calling them alicorns since I was 12 honestly.  I blame Piers Anthony.  Before that I don't know.
"How much for the horse tornado?"
"Sir, that's a carousel."
"I must have it!"

So, apparently I am one of the odd ones - I used the term "unisus"  :silly:

Later I guess I started calling them winged unicorns because "unisuses" just doesn't sound good xD

I called them unisus too! lol

I just called them "winged unicorns" back in the day, even though I always felt like it was a mouthful.  Had I known about the term "alicorn" when I was little, I would've been all over it!  I actually really like the idea of reappropriating the term to mean the animal as a whole as well as the horn material.

I think some of my grade school friends may have called them "pegacorns," but that "g" sound so close to "corn" always sounded a little funny to me.

Yeah, as far as I know, there were no unicorns in Greek mythology.
Nirvana grails:  Reverse Gusty (upgrade), Peru Windy and Moonstone (upgrade), Brazil TAF upgrades, Argie Powder w/ white hair (upgrade), French Windy and Moondancer (upgrades), Spain TAF's, TE's, and piggies.  These are my biggest wants, but I'm looking for tons more nirvanas, especially Greeks, Brazilians, and Peruvians.  Feel free to PM me for sales or trades.  But please note that I'm also fairly picky.

I have always called them, "winged unicorn", because of the, "Whisper the Winged Unicorn", book series that I used to read as a kid.
