Cleaning up some girls - how to get hair shiny?
« on: June 03, 2013, 10:01:49 AM »
Hi all!  I'm cleaning up a few girls that I'm about to put up for sale.  And after all these years of collecting, I've never figured out how to get that shininess in their hair that really accents them.

Tips please?  I want to avoid going to the store to buy new products if possible...

It's pretty surprising what conditioner can do sometimes! When it's really bad I like to let the pony sit with conditioner saturating her hair for at least a day. Everyone seems to have preferred brands, but I find that most of them work just about the same as any other, barring higher-end specialty types of conditioner.

You can also make frizziness look less severe by styling the hair into tight curls.

Thank you.  :)  I've got one girl already soaking in conditioner now.  Ugh!  Took me quite a while to get through the snarls.  I'll straw curl her hair tomorrow.  :)

Any good 'leave in' stuff?

Getting through snarls is a pain... I just did two Brush n Grow ponies last night, and my gods. SO MUCH HAIR. It was totally worth it though. Work your way from the roots and the ends, gradually combing the tangles down toward the ends of the hair, letting the conditioner lubricate those tangles. That seems to be the gentlest way to do it.

Oh I could imagine!  I'm doing a Fashion Star Fillie at the moment...  :drunk:  I don't want to loose her curls, so it's take me forever!

I agree that the conditioner/shampoo you use can make all the difference.

When I am selling and cleaning up a pony I simply use shampoo. However, when I am having a specific photo shoot, I use baby shampoo with a small amount of baby oil mixed in to it. I have no clue as to why it works but it makes hair lovely and glossy.

Conditioner!  :green: I buy those $1 sample bottles for my ponies so I don't use my family's conditioner. Never thought of baby oil before, but now I think I'll have to try it! I also didn't think about using straw curls to hide frizziness... I know a few frizzy ponies who are going back to the spa today.

I feel you on those Brush n Grows... I had a Glittering Gem with her tail gnarled up and stuck inside her body, so there was this bid crazy chunk of hair to sort out. So much hair to comb though...
