Engagement Ring Superstitions
« on: October 06, 2012, 05:49:20 PM »
Here is a short story:
My grandmother and grandfather got engaged at 14 and 19, married at 15 and 20. My grandmother passed away in 1996, left me her bridal set. (I'm her only granddaughter.)

Now, I want nothing more than to wear this bridal set. I never really knew her and I feel like she would want me to. The set itself is beautiful. It is actually what I would want my own boyfriend to eventually pick out for me. (Not to mention, it's free.)

I told one of my coworkers about it and she told me it would be bad luck for me to wear them because my grandmother and grandfather actually got divorced.  I'm on the fence about it. I don't want to get divorced, I don't really believe in it.

What are y'alls thoughts?
And do you have any other engagement/wedding superstitions that you believe?

Do it.  My sister has our grandmother's wedding band, I have a copy of it.  Divorced or not, it's family.  KWIM?

Oh lordy, I'm not with the times! Thanks!

I was leaning towards that, just using them anyway. My boyfriend knows I want to and currently they're hidden away in his undie drawer, haha.

Don't be silly, there's no such thing as bad luck bringing wedding rings. If you like it, you should definitely wear it. Divorces are caused by people themselves, not by cursed objects.

I say use them if you like them.  I have my mother's engagement diamond on my engagement ring (she upgraded a loooooong time ago, and I like the idea of passing the diamond down through the family).  I think it's great to have family heirlooms like that.

If you like them, then wear them!  I don't follow superstitions, if you love someone, then a hand-me-down ring isn't going to hurt that.  I think it's sweet that you want to wear them!

I'm usually not superstitious, but I like to wear jewelry for good luck sometimes.
In this case, personally, I wouldn't use them, beautiful or not, family or not. I would want my own thing, picked out by my fiance, for our future together.

Prince William and Kate's wedding, he gave her Lady Di's engagement ring. It just seemed ... dunno, wrong, because those two were not happy in their marriage.
Anyway, that's just my opinion. :)

I've been working in jewelry for 15 years now, and have seen pretty much everything.  I've seen 80 thousand dollar wedding end in divorce in 10 months and couples in their 80's celebrating their vows again.  I have never, ever seen a "bad luck" engagement ring.  Ever.  Divorce is not something that happens because you wear a cursed engagement ring hunny.

I think there are few things as special as an heirloom piece of jewelry.  Wearing your grandmothers rings is a beautiful way to honor her and connect with her.  In my humble opinion, a beautiful shiny new ring is great, but a piece with history and family ties is priceless.  Wear her ring with pride, and don't believe any dumb superstitious naysayers (cause they just jealous!).

I personally think that worrying about bad luck is what creates it, not something someone else did, so I think you should go for it if it's what you want. My husband and I used my grandmother's set and it is so precious to me. Every time I look at it I have such wonderful memories. So go for it, if it makes you happy, it's a good thing.
