I wish the US would have had the comics too. It seems we missed a lot of personality traits of the ponies  just having the backcard stories and the animated shows.

Here's the one about Lickety Split and the long gallop (After Paint Pot Magic)

and the one about Applejack and the crab apples http://heckyeahponyscans.tumblr.com/search/crab+apples

I feel sorry for Applejack getting pinched by the crabs but maybe she learned not to be so greedy. :)

I didn't know Magic Star could wink in and out. That is really interesting. :)

I'm pretty sure it's in the Big book of pony stories or whatever it's called, but all of those came from comics originally I *think*. I just have it in my mind that she did that on one occasion in a story.

But then Gypsy, now I think about it, had an even weirder fun kind of magic. And it especially seemed well suited when it was a Friday 13th. Between her and Baby Lucky, all kinds of weird stuff happened.

Edit: This one has Magic Star's wishing magic but I don't think I have the other story that's lurking in my brain regarding her...

The show never had an episode take place in November.  Pony Puppy included that span, but they might have put the fireworks on hold due to Dinah being scared of them.

Nope, fireworks happened for Fizzy in November because of Guy Fawkes here in the UK around that time. She was the pony who made fireworks in the UK comic, thus she hosted Fizziwhizz night, and it coincided with that. It was a purely UK thing, so I doubt it would have even occurred to American animators to insert something like that. I know you have fireworks, but it's a little different - 4th July is a celebration of independence that features fireworks, but Guy Fawkes night is about celebrating the defeat of a plot to blow up parliament, with gunpowder - hence fireworks.

So Fizzy and fireworks kind of make sense, although maybe Sky Rocket would have been more so...
A pony who  never appeared in the show because the second wave of Year 4 went ignored by the show.

Again, the show was so limited.  The only group of ponies that really got any time was the first wave of Year 4.  And there were only 18 stories in the first season.  While the comic was released 26 times a year all year round with multiple stories an issue.

I know Magic Star's backcard described one of her spells being able to give a pony wings like a pegasus.  I blew the minds of my two friends (and a room full of convention goers) when I told them that one.

Well, the irony is that the Fact file and thus the comic versions of the movie star ponies are not on the UK backcards but mostly seem to be derived from the US backcard entries...which the US animators flat out ignored in some cases. Weird but true. I have no issue with the US characterisation of the ponies. A lot of the US stories in the early years are really detailed compared with the UK, but the UK fleshed them out in the comic while the US animation dumbed down the creative ideas on the backcards to create a short show.

Genuinely despise what they did to the Princess Ponies. Having grown up with the beautiful characterisations in the comics, and especially Pearl's gentle, sensitive nature and wishing pearl tears, that episode still makes me cringe at times.

Princess ponies here apparently knew their place, as Majesty was Queen, so they just got on with their own stuff ;)

I always figured the Princess Ponies were like Majesty's court or ladies in waiting.  I do agree the U.K. is a better source of material for them and would reference it regarding them.

I also picture Magic Star's magic being held in her wand which she can shrink down into a mane pin to wear when she's not using it.

I wouldn't call what Sunbow/Marvel did dumbing down, but an unrefined and unfinished work.  They had creative ideas and plans for the ponies.  They just never had the chance to execute them to their fullest.

I agree that Sunbow wasn't kind to the Princess Ponies. They came across as kind of shallow and vain. I think one thing that made the original special so great was the fact that they had more time to plan and create a storyline. It really shows that they put a lot of thought in to it. The TV series had some good storylines but also had "showcase" episodes featuring a specific set of ponies that we never saw in the carton again which limited what they were able to do with them.
