Was G1 Applejack clumsy?
« on: December 01, 2016, 01:43:45 PM »
Hi,

I seem to remember something in the G1 media about Applejack being clumsy. Was it ever mentioned anywhere? I know Sundance was shown as being a little clumsy in Escape from Catrina and Shady in the tv series but was Applejack considered clumsy also?

She fell off a bridge and was ponynapped to become one of Tirek's chariot-beasts. Oh, and Firefly knocked her over along with a huge basket of apples.

Maybe not clumsy so much as unfortunate?

She fell off a bridge in the special.  Her American backcard shows her accidentally getting hung up in a tree.  And I believe her UK one says she is always knocking over fences.

Yes she fell off the bridge (which was broken) but, to me, that doesn't make her automatically clumsy. She was also captured, but that isn't really clumsiness.

I know that that's what it says on her card, but just by going with the pilot episode, it doesn't seem very preminent.

Hahahahaa ah yes poor Applejack was a bit of a klutzy goofball.  Always in the wrong place at the wrong time...  especially for an Earth Pony.

I saw the title of the thread and IMMEDIATELY Applejack's song began playing in my head!

The comics were in Europe. The UK had about 220 or so of them plus combined comics with other 1980s series like the Glo Friends and Moondreamers, known as MLP & Friends (like the animated series did but it carried on). They ran here from 1985ish to 1993ish I think. I know a lot of European countries also had them in their own languages but am less sure on the duration. I have some German ones but mostly for the beautiful adverts as my German is not great.

In the UK, Applejack's original backcard has no story. At least, I don't have her 1984 card, but I have Blossom's from the same set and there are no stories on backcards in 1984 in the UK. I have her 1985 Groom & Style release card. If Photobucket will behave I'll upload it, I have most of my backcards in images as when I have some time I want to do something more with them...

Hopefully that works. Short but sweet and yes, definitely clumsy, which was the theme that always came up in the comics and the song as well. And I am pretty sure it's in the books as well. I remember some book-and-cassette stories where she was always saying her catchphrase, "Oh Applesauce" because something amiss had happened.

I only have Applejack's year 3 US backcard but it looks from what's been said above like she had the same story in the US release between year 2 and year 3, with Bubbles having to rescue her from a tree..?

There's far more stuff saying she's clumsy than not; Rescue at Midnight Castle is just one episode, and it implies it, whereas the rest of G1 Apple-lore flat out states it ;)

Thanks everyone. Applejack's song was neat and I like seeing her  Groom and Style backcard too.   It's nice to know that I wasn't just imagining Hasbro making Applejack a clumsy pony .:)

I just looked at my copy of the "My Little Pony Adventure Book" and not only did Applejack get herself lost, she also got herself tangled in some briars/thorns.

I do think Applejack getting captured by Tirek in Rescue at Midnight Castle wasn't so much due to her being clumsy as she just happened to be the unlucky pony that was walking a little behind the others and that made her the easiest of the 4 ponies in the castle for the guards to catch.

Applejack was definitely clumsy.  Her US backcard story was about getting stuck in a tree after jumping for an apple. :P

In the UK comics she was always breaking things or knocking them over by accident.  Plus, yeah, that song. :P

In the MLP Adventure story (it was hardcover and came with a Read-Along cassette tape) Applejack was portrayed as, not necessarily clumsy, but short-sighted or lacking judgement and also being one of the younger ponies.  Firefly ends up going to her rescue when she gets lost in the dark woods at nightfall with an assist from Moondancer's glow.
