Off Topic / Re: Sewing machine... need guidance!
« on: July 07, 2013, 09:55:11 AM »
I started sewing around December, also, since I started belly dancing- costumes are crazy expensive!  I took a few classes at JoAnn's craft stores which were very basic and helpful.  They will let you use a store-provided machine or bring your own, so that is a good way to get experience.

One interesting thing my teacher shared was that the new machines are plastic, and while relatively cheap can't really be repaired (fancy, though! All kinds of stitches).  I was using one from the 80's courtesy of my mother-in-law, and she remarked that mine would last forever and was worth being repaired. Repairs can be expensive, but picking up a used machine from the 70's-80's might be the way to go if you are looking for long-term use.  I'd definitely recommend taking a class somewhere- my teacher also knew who the good repairmen were and which machines in the store were better.

Did they all have longer hair than US/Hong Kong?  I didn't know that- I would have thought it suspicious if I'd seen it on ebay   I don't have any nirvana's yet, obviously  :enthralled:

I care!  I'd love you hear how you do it, especially since it seems like it's harder and harder to find G1's.  Thanks for offering to share  :frolic:

She already has a large brown splotch on her belly- some substance I had to scrape off that left a stain behind.  I suspect that will take cream whitening anyway

Bump for more ponies!  Some of these will go to Ebay soon, as I have more ponies on their way.  Make me an offer!

Great job! Keep an eye on Gingerbread, she can burn / get discoloured in the sun. I managed to sunfade some spots off mine but her colour that had been exposed to the sun changed a bit to a not so white shade. Managed to save her before it got worse.

Ack!  Should I be fixing her up with cream instead?  I'd already heard that somewhere about Chief...

Bump for more pics! Still working on the G1's and fakies... ^.^

Pony Corral / Re: How Do You Store Your MLP Collection?

Scrapbooking materials are something you can sometimes pick up at garage and rummage sales (and sometimes thrift stores) pretty cheap- new they can be super expensive.  I definitely agree that it depends on how long you expect them to be in storage, and/or special ponies.  One prone to cancer and discoloration (chartreuse hair, etc) would be worth more careful wrapping.

I also find  I tend to forget about things in tubs.  If I'm keeping the pony for myself I'd rather have it somewhere I can see it, although that can get tough depending on how much space you have.  Since I'm married and in my thirties I don't like them haunting the bedroom- not a very grown-up and romantic atmosphere

I've always wrapped items (including ponies) in white tissue paper, to ensure that if anything got wet the tissue paper dye didn't spread.  Never considered that the white paper might contain bleach residue...

One thought for expensive or particularly precious ponies- you might wrap them in acid and lignin free paper like they use for scrapbooking and archiving things.  Regular paper contains certain acids and lignin (a natural plant product) that can interact with photos and plastics and cause staining and breakdown.  I don't have so many ponies yet that I'm doing this but I plan to in the future.

I would think ponies that you leave out on display are safe since they don't have anything rubbing against them and moisture can't get trapped around them.

Hi everyone!

I was very excited today to get a shipment of ponies.  They are amazingly dirty!  I actually really like cleaning up my ponies so I'm a pretty happy camper right now.  I wanted to start taking before and after photos, especially given how dirty these pretty white ponies are :silly:

Lots of G3 for me to identify, including two babies! Many of these will be for sale

Also quite a few fakies, some of which are very pretty.  Any help ID'ing them would be much appreciated- is there a good fakie website?

Apologies if this should be in the brag thread- they're not nirvanas or anything but I am pretty psyched :)  Feel free to move if needed  :P

**Update**
So many ponies.... I wanted to post some after pics, as promised.  This isn't nearly all of them, but here are a few.  I guess the pony gods give and take away- someone wanted to be a hairdresser, as a couple of the G3's have obvious hair cuts.  However, many of the tinsel hair ponies still have lovely and straight tinsel!  Gingerbread is undergoing sun fading and Chief is being treated for cancer.  Pony Bride became bright white with the application of Magic Eraser and Dawn  :bigups:

Update #2  Here are all the G3's (except for a few being treated for dry hair) along with a couple of styling ponies I picked up thrift shopping.  I like the pony army look!
