Pony Corral / Re: Unpopular pony opinions!

I do not like plastic clothes for ponies of any gen, please give us more fabric ones again.
Yes, 100% this. I saw the new ones from Toy Fair, looked at their clothes and went "Nope". I just don't see the allure--even if I can see practical reasoning behind it. Plastic clothes look silly / cheesy / ... something... to me.

Wow! A lot of pretty G3s there. :) I was looking at a few of them over on Strawberry Reef last night. I'm trying to make a small list of them that I want first. I really like the design of the G3 ponies for some reason. I'm mainly into G4 because I love the show, but I also want to compliment those with some ponies from the other gens as well. Good luck finding homes for these guys. :)

Nice stuff! I love the Monster High vinyls and Diamond Mint is really pretty. (So is Rarity, but that doesn't surprise me. :p ) The red Barbie horse is pretty cool, and I like the blind bag ponies. Enjoy your new stuff! :)

That's adorable. <3 I particularly love the Pinkie Pie / Rainbow Dash mix with the fluffy pink and white hair. She's certainly doing a great job at making her ponies look unique. :)

She's cute. If I saw her somewhere while shopping I'd definitely be interested. :)

Thank you all for the advice and thoughts you have shared. Now I have some names to look for to help others, some insight on how others view this hobby, and some interesting thoughts to consider. :)

I completely get what you're saying though, Hathorcat. :) I'm just one of those Twilight-esque people who try to organize and plan -everything- ... Even when it may not really be possible.

I'm much closer to having a plan about what I want to do next weekend than I was, though. So this thread has been very helpful. :)

If those had been around when I was a kid I probably would have been just as into ponies as I was into dolls; possibly more so. I love the fact that these are meant to be mixed and matched. I also like the fact that the playsets aren't as massive--or at least don't seem to be?--as those for other things. The added bonus that you get to decorate the playsets, too, only sweetens the deal further. Even now, all grown up, I'm interested in getting some pop ponies because of their creative aspects.

I think that these are a wonderful compliment to the mlp brand because they encourage imagination and creativity. As the only daughter in my family, I didn't really have someone to 'properly' play dolls with. My brothers would mess with them for a while, but it ultimately wasn't their thing. Stuff that drew me closer to my dolls and their world--I vividly remember my "Barbie Western Fun Motor Home"--were some of my most played with and cherished toys. (And it had it's share of annoying parts, too. :D )

I hope that you and your daughter continue to have fun with mlp, whether it's with brushables, pop ponies, or any other part of owning these toys. You are very lucky to have a kid to share this with. I tried to get my niece into dolls and she was totally uninterested. (Would far rather play with a computer or her tablet.) Creative, imaginative play is a gift that should be cherished. :)

I need the metalic pop Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash, the SA, Spike, and Cadance funkos, the Sweet Apple Acres barn (comes with Granny Smith. Must. Own. Now!), a bunch of the little Sweet Acres characters, the Playskool collector set (so cute!), the solid golden Rainbow Dash (maybe), the Canterlot Castle, Rarity's shop (!!!) and some of the ponies that come with codes for the new app. (I love digital stuff if it's done well--I'm going to be optimistic for now.) ... My wallet is going to hate me, and so are my shelves. Whew!

Pony Corral / New To Collecting Ponies. Advice?
« on: February 13, 2015, 10:37:29 PM »
Hello :)

I started this account back in 2010 because I was interested in Monster High dolls. But I've recently gotten really into MLP: Friendship is Magic and now I want to get some ponies to compliment my love of the show. But there are so many different ways to get them: blind bags, Funko Pops, brushable MLP, MLP POP ponies, plushies, MLP fashions style ponies... And I'm sure I'm missing something, even listing all that. (And I'm not even touching playsets or other types of merch on that list.)

Anyway... I'm going on a big shopping trip for my birthday next weekend and I plan to feature the ponies as part of what I'm hoping to buy. But just going to a bunch of stores and randomly grabbing everything I see seems like a surefire way to end up with a mountain of toys and no way to sort them. I'm pretty sure that's not what I want.

I know I'm getting the MLP: FiM guidebook, the Cutie Mark Crusaders Doodlebook (I *love* coloring / activity books; never grew out of them from childhood. I find them relaxing.) and Styling Strands Fluttershy (also maybe Styling Strands Rarity, but that's not written in stone--long story.) as those are gifts from my boyfriend.

I know there's no right or wrong way to start collecting ponies. But I figure if I go shopping with a plan I'm more likely to buy what I actually want rather than risking buyer's remorse from just buying everything.

Here are a few questions:

1. Do you think it works better to try and collect different characters or various versions of favorite characters? Both?

2. Do you feel that any particular type of pony collectibles are more enjoyable? (Brushables? Mini figures? Funko?)

3. Since it was the cartoon that got me into these G4 ponies (I believe that's the term?) does it stand to reason that I should check out the original cartoon to see if it connects me to G1? I never had the chance to watch it as a kid--there was big time competition for TV cartoon time and I had two brothers. :)

4. Where do you think playsets fit into collecting pony stuff? Are they as important as the ponies? Are they worth it for a new collector?

5. (This may seem a weird question, but...) What do people DO with the ponies? I mainly owned barbies and action figures growing up. I never really understood the ponies (as stated earlier) so I'm curious what their allure is as toys. (To me they're TV characters at this point.)

6. Where does Equestria Girls fit into the whole pony thing? I saw the first movie and thought it was 'okay'. I've heard the second one is better. I'm kinda torn on these--I collect Monster High and these would fit in... But I'm not sure whether I'd display them with the Monsters or the Ponies? (Again, I realize there's no real definitive answer here.)

7. What do you think is currently the MLP item to have? It doesn't necessarily mean I'll want / need it; I just think it would be fun to know what others are hunting for. :)

8. If there was one piece of advice someone could have given you when you decided to collect ponies (or even toys in general), what would it have been? That question may make sense or may seem strange. I'm not sure how many kept collecting from childhood vs. returned to this later in life. (I did that with dolls.)

***

Most of these questions are purely opinion based and are likely more discussion based, rather than things with a definitive answer that will work for everyone. But I'm getting very excited about my shopping trip and can't seem to make up my mind what I'm actually after, so I'm hoping hearing others thoughts will help me sort that out. Thanks for your time and have a nice day. :)

"I have the power!!!" *cracks up*

Okay, okay. I do still want the doll, but after HeMan was mentioned, I totally couldn't resist. It's definitely an ... interesting ... artistic choice. That's for sure.

What I'm really curious about is who the Pizzazz wannabe is in the background? (EQG with the green hair.) Might need to buy 2 of those: one to leave as-is and one to have my friend sew a Rydia (Final Fantasy IV) costume for. *shrug* Only time will tell.

I agree with everyone saying the castle looks amazing. If I can get things sorted around here and make some room, that's definitely something I'm going to want. Cadance is pretty, but I'm new to FiM and haven't meet her on the show yet, so I'm neutral to her. Whether I'll want her will depend on how I like her character. I do want the Glamour Glow Rarity that was released, though. (Rarity and Fluttershy are my favorites.)

I love the Apple family, but I'm not sure how I feel about this stuff being blind bag items. I'm not sure how easily I can get that kinda thing here in Canada,. and finding people to trade duplicates to can be a pain. Hmm...

Gorgeous colors and very interesting design. Looks like you had a Berry Merry Christmas. :)

Lovely! I really like how Applejack has her hat. So cute!

I'm glad to see the image of Rarity out of the box. I know I'm getting Styling Strands Fluttershy and I may be getting Rarity as well. (Birthday fast approaching! XD ) I can't believe how long the hair is, though. Wow!

Anyway, have a great day and enjoy your new ponies. :)

I'm in love with Rarity's shop and will be buying that the moment I see it. (She's my second favorite pony, right after Fluttershy.)

On one hand I feel immense sympathy for all of you who have stuck with mlp for months, years or decades. It sucks that you aren't getting new, exciting characters as brushables. On the other hand, I'm 100% new to collecting ponies (joined back in '10 because I love dolls.) and got into mlp via Friendship is Magic. So I do want at least one version of all of the mane six, and will be happy to get a set without any danger of getting gauged by people trying to stock up and re-sell. (I can respect people placing value on older ponies and collecting them as a vintage item, but it's annoying when someone goes to stores, grabs all of something and wants to resell on ebay or amazon market.)

I agree with those saying that Hasbro should have taken a hint from Skylanders or Monster High if they were going to re-release. They should be offering something for their loyal customers to purchase as well. Failing to do this is definitely a blind spot.

Pony Corral / Re: Crowning Glory?
« on: February 04, 2015, 01:42:30 AM »
"Crowning glory" means "the greatest or most beautiful thing" or "the most impressive part of something."  e.g. "The ballroom is the crowning glory of the palace."

I love her name. She's the queen of my G3 herd!

Yes, this. When I saw the thread title I thought everyone was going to be talking about the most beloved pony in their collection. Whoops.
