Title: The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar
Post by: Sora on November 22, 2015, 01:28:51 PM
Slightly strange request on a pony board! Is anyone streaming The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar at all?

It's airing on Disney Channel at 7PM in the US.

Apparently, the official site is streaming it too: http://disneychannel.disney.com/
...But needless to say, I'm region blocked.

I don't suppose anyone here will be/knows someone streaming it? I'll even take a stream being recorded from a smartphone, I'm that desperate :silly:

Just saw it on TV.

I have to admit, the commercials for this made me think "lame", but the story itself is decent.  Not crazy about the animation, but plot looks good.

Some parts are just 'stolen' from past Lion King movies, but I think the show is a cute idea.  I like the new twist.  (Won't say more, don't want to spoil anything for anyone!)

It looks like it's up on watchcartoononline. Not sure if direct links are allowed; just Google "watchcartoononline" and the site should come up. The link to TLG is the first one on the main page at the moment.

Just finished watching it, it was pretty good. A little odd how the first nearly half was without songs, then suddenly the 2nd half was MUSICAL NUMBERS. Not bad, not overly catchy, but okay I guess. Animation was good, I noticed it was trying to look a bit classic with pencil like line work. Voice acting was pretty cute, love how they got James Earl Jones to reprise his role as Mufasa.  Only thing that bugs me a bit is that it's a "in between" series, since it's placed between LK1 and LK2... so it's gonna make LK2 well... not so canon.. unless Kion just winds up with a totally unhappy ending and vanishes at the end? Seems a bit of an odd choice, but overall, a good start to the series, I look forward to more.

Also, I was surprised they openly addressed death, admitting to the hyenas killing the gazelles. Good on them for that instead of trying to do the "everyone is friends" route.

i    at first didnt think this was goign to be any good. becuase of how the trailer    had  the  mark "appear" on him much like the   cutie marks do on mlp .

but it was really cute!! i do love the song he sings. its downright adorable.

I just saw it!!!!!!! Ahhhhh Kiara is adorable as EVER! I was worried there wouldn't be a relationship between Kion and his sister, I'm glad there was!!!! I'm happy they made this movie, it was just so cute and a great Lion King mini movie!! Kions little baby spots are so cute! x3 Also yaaay more background on Scar!

I watched it and it was pretty good.  Nice animation.  I feel like Kiara has lost a lot of her character compared to TLK2, though.  Also, is it just me or did they change her from being golden to being young-Nala colored?

I'm curious to know if they're ever going to address where the other two female cubs came from or if it's going to be one of those "lol pls don't think about it" things.  In a real lion pride they'd be Kiara and Kion's half-siblings, but I'm pretty sure "Disney lions" are supposedly monogamous.

Yup, they changed Kiara's color.

And I am positive that "Disney lions" are monogamous... even though you NEVER seen other male lions. I mean, who's Nala's father? If there aren't any other males then it has to be Mufasa or Scar.

I really, really, REALLY like the show! I loved getting some backstory on Scar. I hope in the future they tell us how he got his scar. I'm also questioning why they had to create Kion. Why couldn't Kiara lead The Lion Guard? What's wrong with a girl being the leader?

I am also impatiently waiting for the TOYS this new show will bring. I want my Kion plushie NOW!!! Sadly, with  new Disney Jr shows it takes 6 months to a year before anything shows up. I can understand that with the other shows.... But I don't understand it with The Lion Guard. They're making a new show for characters that already have a VERY LARGE fan base. There's no reason why they couldn't have had at least a few things released through the Disney Store at the same time.

I actually enjoyed LK2, but in such a way that, yeah, I have zero qualms about them ignoring it or picking & choosing what they want from it.

I appreciate Kiara as a somewhat insufferable character. I predict that Kion might have to face a situation similar to Scar's resentment of his brother and have to overcome that. So far, though, I don't why she is so exasperated with Kion. So far he's acted very mature and thoughtful, and wasn't really established as a troublemaker or lackadaisical as she (and Simba!) think he is. I can a=only assume he was worse as a young cub, so it was harder for the two of them to recognize he had matured and was "ready."

I don't like Kion's name. It's like Eragon... just take a relevant word, take the first letter, replace it with one of the adjacent letters, and voila! A creative name! (...."Kion" is gong to turn out to be something Swahili now that I've said that, isn't it?)

I already forget the honey badger's name, but anyway, I found him annoying at first, but he endeared himself to me by the end of the episode. In the hands of a writer who has trouble writing hyperactive characters, though... hope we don't have aother G4 Pinkie Pie on our hands.

Timon and Puumba as the badger's worried parents is dang cute. (No, nothing like that is explicitly stated, but it is clear that they raised him.) I wonder if they might have learned their lesson that treating Simba as a friend and not as a child might not have been good for him overall.

I would like to see more characterization (Edit, I forgot the rest of the sentence!) of the rest of the lion guard, but I'm sure that's coming!

Question: were the songs intended to be remixes of already known song? The opening song had parts that sounded exactly out of "It's always a good time," which I figured was a coincidence, but "Zuka Zama" sounded like "Born to Hand Jive" :P Probably coincidences, but I thought maybe I was missing something.

I like the voices they got for everyone, both the original actors, the new, and their sound-alikes.

I like the animation. (Is it hand-drawn?? When they zoomed in on some of the cells, they looked like pencil, but I'm sure a computer could emulate that.

I love that kid who plays the little white bird. Man, his voice is changing fast, though! I hope the showmakers are okay with that.

I liked Scar's backstory, as it explains why he is pretty much a pariah in the movie, and also why there are no other male lions around. (Because at this point, I doubt they are going to be scientifically accurate anyway, and I've seen people be uncomfortable with applying a lion's sex life to Simba.)

If you go into this special hoping for it to be everything you've ever wanted to see in a Lion King series, they you will be disappointed. But if you take it for what it is, it's a pretty cool little show.

Meh, this is about what I expected. I think I would have liked it as a kifd. The characters' head-to-body ratio feels off. I could swear the changed the mark design.

I could have sworn that I heard that it was somewhere, but I did some searching and Kion doesn't seem to be Swahili. Looks like just a weird name. (I'm doing to sound dumb, but I never realized the Eragon - Dragon thing )

I did find an article on the Disney blog about the use of Swahili or 'swahilish' (a combination of Swahili and English) they are using.
Some translations they included were:
Hevi kabisa! "Totally intense!"

Zuka Zama! "Pop up, dive in!" (Did they actually say this in the song? I don't remember hearing it..)

Yes, I remember it being a paw? Something like this?

If you look through older fan art from when it was first being teased there's art of Kion with a paw rather than the roaring lion.

--

My thoughts: As someone who loves cartoons for any age, even some stuff thats on Disney junior already, I'm pretty happy with this. I'm annoyed with all the plot holes it creates in TLK Canon but I'm more than willing to keep up with the series and see where it leads as it develops. I adore the lion king, I really do, and while I understand why some fans are blowing their lids over it I personally think they're doing a pretty decent job with this (odd changes aside). Kinda wish Kiara hadn't been changed and they had brought in Kopa (whoops yeah I'm kind of a bitter fan too) instead of Kion but hey, we can't call the shots here. I think the new characters are cute, especially the freckled face lion cub and the smug cheetah! The hippo and egret need more development, I feel they weren't touched on enough. I really want an explanation of Timon and Pumba raising a Honey Badger though.
It'll be a good show for the kids, I'm happy to have some Lion King back in my life  :)
(Gonna impatiently wait for plushies now...)

Funny, I didn't mind it too much. I just think it's odd to do mid movie series, that's all.  It's like, we know the ending so whats the point? Unless Disney is trying to make TLK2 non canon...

LK2 is one of my favorite Disney movies!!! I LOVE the watch it in German!!! Especially when Kiara sings! The messages of that movie is important to me! :D

I also thought the songs sounded similar to songs that already existed! They were still cute though!

Isn't there another movie or tv series coming out simply called the Lion Guard? I want toys.

I wish they'd placed this series after TLK2 and had Kiara be the grown up big sister of Kion.  Little kids often idolize much older siblings, but also feel they can't match up to them, so they could have explored that angle.  It's just awkward the way we now have to assume Kiara had a sibling all this time during TLK2 who was never mentioned or seen.

I have to admit, I think they should have named the new cub Kopa.  It would be throwing a nice bone to hardcore TLK fans and since Kion doesn't mean anything--why not?

I still think the premise of the show is interesting, though.  I really, really, REALLY hope Sarabi shows up or is at least mentioned.

No, Kiara's still the same orangish color she is in Simba's Pride. :) I got to watch Return of the Roar Monday night after very happily finding it on Amazon Prime and for only $3 too. I've been so excited about this show since we first found out about it last year as a die-hard Lion King fan since the first one came out. I really really enjoyed Return of the Roar. Kiara is much less annoying now though the role of whiny and annoying seems to have gone to Zuri instead which is a shame because I really like her design. At least Tiifu is more levelheaded like Kiara is now. I really like Tiifu's design as well. I think Bunga is pretty annoying for the most part and weird for a honey badger. Kion is a great character and I like the extra back story on Scar.

Can't wait for more in January. =)

I compared the cast lists between TLK movie and TLG last night. The only characters that are voiced by the same people in both are Mufasa and Pumbaa.

I watched The Lion Guard the night it preimered....it was alright :s the badger is annoying as all heck though :(

And Kion is just a really lame name. Its just "lion" but with a "K" :/
Can't believe Timon and Simba aren't voiced by the same people... seriously, what is Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick doing?  Disney, y u know bug them?!

That "cheetah" is an absolute disgrace IMO...I was utterly confused when I saw it. "The fastest in the land"...but she doesn't have SPOTS.

Her coat was close to a leopard's  if anything :/

and leopards are not nearly as fast and agile as a cheetah...

Unless, Disney's intention was that the cheetah was supposed to be a KING cheetah

They shoulda stuck to this (if this was their idea)

An ACTUAL cheetah...

And those "Lion guard" marks were completely unnecessary...Like why? O.o we know who's within the Guard group..so what's they reason?

Am I being harsh, yes. But I was just overall disappointed in the new Lion King thing :(

The cheetah also looks more cartoony compared to the other animals, IMO.  Especially whenever you see her with Kion because they're both big cats, so why don't they have the same "level" of animation, you know?  At least give her pupils in her eyes??

Here's another really cute fan art for her:

If nothing else, I wish they'd given her dark "tear streaks".

Pretty sure 'Kion' is a shortened version of 'Kiongozi', which means leader in Swahili :)

I've changed the topic title to better reflect what this thread has become :P

I managed to watch it in the end. I really enjoyed it! Like others have said though, I wish they'd drawn Fuli a bit closer to her actual species, especially when Swifty from one of the Lion King comics looked so great!

Totally agree that the first two episodes are much better than Return of the Roar.
I adore Jasiri and hope we see a lot more of her in the future (I think I read somewhere that she is going to be a recurring character), and that she joins the Lion Guard and becomes a couple with Kion because they were too cute together in that episode and the Sisi ni Sawa song. I REALLY liked the show made it a point to state that most hyenas are actually good and dont act like Janja and his crew.  now that I think about it, it's kinda odd that Janja is a leader of his group, since IRL the leader of a hyena group is a female. But it is Disney, lol . Also like how they are "sneaking in" animal facts in the show as well.

I hope we get more merchandise for the series (and they better make a plush for Jasiri, and Kiara, along with her two friends as well). I was so tempted to buy a plush of Kion or Fuli at the Disney Store.

Are Janja, Jasiri, and the rest supposed to be hyena cubs?  Or adults?  If they're adults then they're tiny, since Kion is basically the same size.  But if they're cubs then how the heck does Janja even have a clan.  Unless someone else runs the clan and he's just like . . . the neighborhood bully?

In an interview, Janja's clan were described as 'teen' descendants of the original hyenas :)

Question...
Since Kiara is still a cub, I assume this is all pre-Kovu? Wonder if he will ever show up in the show. Or is this like an alternate reality thing?

Kovu, Nuka & Vitani have been confirmed as characters that will show up in a future episode! No word on Zira, though.

...Yeah, I've been spending too much time gathering info on this show :P

Thanks, Sora I was hoping The Lion Guard was going to somehow tie in to Lion 2 with Kiara and Kovu. So The Lion Guard is supposed to be happing during Lion King 2?

I hope they really will be. MTV posted an article a few months before the one that claims confirmation saying they wont be in it. Maybe Disney changed their minds? I kinda hope they did. (besides they already screwed up lion king canon with this anyway, might as well do it more! XD)

Oh awesome!! Thanks for the info!! Glad to hear they'll be appearing!

I'm liking the show so far. It's cute, and I'm glad to have new lion king things coming. I'm really happy that they included timon, pumba, kiara, simba, and nala in the show too. I hope we see more of Kiara, I like her. Is she older or younger than Kion? They look about the same size..

Kiara is the first-born, which is why she will be queen.  :)  She and Kion are from the same litter, though.

Thanks for the info about the hyenas being teenagers, that makes sense!

I mentioned it in a previous post, but I've seen people finding plushies at target. Targets website has pre-orders for books  and the film listed as well. I don't know of any other merchandise yet.

Edit: Whoops, I forget they have blind bag figures too! No idea where they're being sold though. I'll add a code list under the spoiler.
Spoiler
ID by the last two digits of the code:

08 — Rare golden Kion

I really love Jasari! Ive only seen the first 2 episodes but I really hope eventually she becomes part of the lion guard! She can be the defender of the outlands LOL! I wonder what Simba would think of his son being friends with a hyena and how many episodes it would take for him to understand how nice she is :P Jasari is just... wow so cute and awesome! I dont understand the british accent, but still flippin awesome!

I LOVE the art omg Bekuno that is amaziiiiiing!

Is it weird I want to see more of Kiara? I mean, she had her own movie and stuff but she is always going to be my favorite! xD Im going to love the next episode! Also I want to see more of Kiara's friends! They are so darned cute! x3

I really like Jasari too. I love her hair/mane! I love that Mufasa will be in the series too and not just the movie. I like how Kion can call on him anytime for advise. Although, it does make me wonder if James Earl Jones is hurting for work.... Between TLG and the Arby's tv commercials.....

I'm not to worried about TLG messing with TLK canon. The jump from TLK to TLK2 never made sense to me. Where the heck did these other lions come from? The movie claims they were part of the pride, but they weren't in the first movie. They couldn't have lived at Pride Rock because they thought that Scar was a good leader. If they had been at Pride Rock, they would have been starving and angry just like Nala and Sarabi. I know Disney wanted to do a Romeo & Juliet type movie, but the two storylines just don't match up! TLK canon has been all over the place for a long time.

Has anybody seen the soundtrack in stores? I don't like downloaded music, but I can't find the CD around here.

I'd like it better if, instead of Mufasa being on sky-speed-dial, Kion heard stories about his grandfather from various animals when he got in trouble, and figured out for himself why his grandfather had done what he'd done, and the logic behind it.  They could show a little flashback of Mufasa so we'd still get to hear that great voice.

Right now I'm kind of like "Wow, if you're going to be floating in the sky ALL THE TIME, you could have maybe told your guilt-ridden son that he didn't really kill you when he was still a tiny cub in the first movie."

Don't get me wrong, I like this series, but I do roll my eyes every time Mufasa poofs in the from clouds.  Hope Kion never gets in trouble on a totally cloudless day!

BTW, I was surprised and amused that the latest episode, "Bunga the Wise", actually had Bunga using the foul-smelling anal sac smell that real honey badgers use.  Also, honey badgers really are extremely clever animals, look at this one using tools to get out of its cage.  (It was put in there because someone tried to domesticate it, then dumped it at the sanctuary, so it was too tame to go back in the wild but if they let him run loose he would attack the other sanctuary animals.)

If it's like how they do it with Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Sofia the First, Miles from Tomorrowland, and their other Junior shows, the show will come out on DVD. I've lost track how many DVDs that Sofia has out. Plus, Lion King is still a popular brand/series/movie for Disney, so they would be fools not to release The Lion Guard on DVD.

I'd wager that the Return of the Roar DVD will have at least three or four episodes from the show included as well.

Fyi there's a new Lion Guard game that you can download on the apple App Store. Idk if it's on android or not. It was 3.99. It has the music videos for popular songs and the game you play as Kion and run through different areas of the pride lands collecting tokens. It's cute. Idk if it was worth $3.99 though.

The way I understand it, Kion can talk to Mufasa because he has the power of the roar. Simba doesn't have the roar so he can't talk to his dad.

Thanks. If all else fails, I'll get the CD online. I was just hoping that Wal-Mart would get it in.

I'm sure we'll see several TLG DVDs. Disney does release tv shows on DVD, but they're just a few random episodes on one disk. What they don't do is release full season sets. The last show they did that for was Hannah Montana. And then it was only season 1 and season 4. Seasons 2 and 3 were never released in sets.

Currently on the DS website they have....
4 Jake/Neverland DVDs
5 Doc DVDs
18 Mickey Mouse Clubhouse DVDs
2 Henry Hugglemonster DVDs
1 Miles/Tomorrowland DVD
1 Sheriff Callie DVD
7 Sofia DVDs

Yeah... I'm not worried. ;)

The latest episode, "Just Can't Wait to Be Queen", was really cute!  Although I'm sad the two non-Kiara lionness cubs seem so shallow.

Zazu's song was great.  Did anyone else notice the visual pun in it?  He says "You grant gazelles their grazing grounds" . . . and shows a bunch of Grant's gazelles.

yeah, I wasnt too fond of Zuri and Tifu doing that "Kiara is the queen she can do whatever she wants" thing. Kinda had hoped Kiara would have said something to them about it, specialy when they tried to give themselves special names.

Hehe, I didnt notice that! I admit I didnt pay too much attention during the song visually, but I must rewatch it later!
I did like how they somewhat mentioned/implied that honey badgers can totally handle bees, with how Bunga looked compared to the others during that scene. xD

Oh Lion Guard, keep on inserting in animal facts without being too blunt/obvious about it. Love it. <3

Just watched the newest episode! I have to agree it's a shame Zuri and Tifu got caught up in the whole Queen situation, I was hoping their character would be a bit better than that. I admit I was expecting Kiara to act a whole lot worse when it came to being Queen temporarily but she was more level-headed. I was happy to see more of Simba and Nala and the new song was great too  :)

I...I love this series.  I'm surprised, because I didn't like the sequels.  But I just adore this series.  I love the bright colors that the original Lion King had.  And, I was kind of nervous that I wouldn't like Kion, but I've already become obsessed with Kion merchandise.  He is just such a cool-looking character!  I actually kind of like his look a little more than cub Simba's look.  I just watched the episode with Jasiri, and I was VERY surprised at how much I genuinely loved that one.  It would be SO awesome if she returns in a future episode!  And, though I know it's unlikely, it would be so sweet to have a plushie of her!

So, speaking of merchandise...has anyone found those action figures in-store?  I managed to score a giant Kion plush at Walmart, and had to order the Disney Store plush online (seriously, every DS I went to had every other character BUT Kion LOL).  But I'm having trouble figuring out where to find the action figures.  I can't seem to find them anywhere.

No joke, I dont blame Fuli for being mad about hunting with Kion's family. He should have told her at the start they weren't hunting to eat. xD

It's funny how before this episode, I didn't care too much for Fuli. But afterwards, I like her alot and I can relate to her. Sometimes people just like being alone (not that they don't like hanging out with others). But it was sweet of the other Guard members to try to include her in things. :)

Also digging her song in the episode. It ain't no Sisi ni Sawa, but it's a nice catchy song. :D

#5 If I were Ono and got dirt in my eye I would so wash it out with that spring water. Poor Ono.

#6 OMG that jackal puppy is soooo CUTE! Fuli is smart. She knew what was up, why does no one listen to her. I love that Kupatana song!

#7 I really liked this epsiode!
Bunga gets bit by snake... Rafiki does nothing xD
DO YOU KNOW HOW SOFT YOU ARE!? x'D
Oh thats not mud! O.o
*Ive always felt it was weird the grazing animals of the pridelands became friends with the lions...then get hunted. Someday that zebra they talk to will get hunted by them... the circle of life, man! xD As a kid I pretended 'Disney Lions' ate fish and dead older wildebeas. LOL.
...Poor Fuli. She was so hungry. I really dont blame her for being a diva because when im hungry im also crabby

Okay, so I gave this show a watch at last. I've been putting it aside mainly because The Lion King never was a thing that made up even a fraction of my childhood.

First thing first, HOLY COW THAT ANIMATION!! I absolutely love that 3D panning, and that smooth, painting-like background. I love how they tried to keep it looking traditional, yet with a bit of a modern twist. I don't get the continuous style change though. One time their movements are frame-locked like in the old, hand-drawn animations, the next shot they are smooth vectors. Speaking of that... lots of squeezing, rather jarring.

As for the character cast, they are diverse, and likable for the most part (except that honey badger). The setting is also rather... interesting. This whole 'Circle of Life' thing is kind of messed up, being an organized killing grounds for the 'lower species' and all, but whatever works I suppose.

So far, I like it. Definite contender against MLP, unlike some bronies say that call it a 'cheap rip-off' because of a single tattoo.

The numbers are somewhere on the back and can be hard/confusing to read. I do like how if you can feel around the bag, you can generally tell who is inside. Beshte and Fuli are the easier ones for me to figure out (although I regret not buying Fuli's blind bag when I had the chance. xD)

Whaaaat really!? OMG they are everywhere here! If they never show up tell me which ones you want and I can snatch some up for you! Do your walmarts have the easter train display!? The robins-egg blue one? We got even more in there last night and those displays are popping up all over the US now! Check those displays!

Still no blind bags here at out Wal-Mart. I was able to go to a Target on Sun. They had the BOX the blind bags go in, but it was filled with other stuff. *sigh* I'm hoping to go to another Target in a couple weeks.

It was a good one. I loved Fuli's face when she got sprayed by the baby elephant. And Kion's face when he was getting mobbed by the kids at the end. So funny!

I LOVE the Lion King franchise and try to catch Lion Guard whenever it comes on Disney Junior. I'm glad the producers stuck to the traditional style of animation like the original, sequels and Timon and Pumbaa series.

I feel like it isn't traditional animation though... It looks like very stylized 3D animation that is designed to look 2D (kind alike paperman was). There's some scenes that don't look right and instead are more 3D looking. I'd really love to see some behind the scenes videos of how they animate the show.

Is there a new episode today?

Oh it's not just me! I think the animation style is very weird... especially their run cycles. I LOVE traditional animation, but there's something about this show that feels like it's computer animated... Is it animated in Flash? Sometimes the movement of the characters reminds me of Friendship is Magic...

The show isn't traditionally animated, but I can't remember if the program used for it is a variation or Flash or not.

Yeah, I'm not sure what program their using either, but it's definitely not traditional animation.

It's usually pretty okay, but it shows its weakness whenever those dead-eyed impalas show up.

I liked it for the most part - still not keen on Simba being a jerk at times, but thought overall it was a cute episode.

I did like how there was a bit of a "visual" callback/reference to "that Mufasa scene" when Simba was falling into the hole.

I completely forgot about watching this show  >_< Looks like it had some weeks skipped so I was only three episodes behind. I particularly liked the migration episode, the baby zebra was super cute and I loved the females leaders.

Simba's Mufasa-esque fall was animated kinda badly, I couldn't help but laugh at it. It just looked awful. I know this a bit of a nitpick but I haaateeeee when Nala and Simba have their four fangs showing. It just looks really dumb and they poke out too much. I agree that I don't like seeing Simba be a butt either.

I do have to say Simba and Bunga singing Hakuna Matata was cute though  :)

I thought the baby zebra in the migration episode was freaking adorable also and I really liked his mother. She was about the only zebra we've seen in that show so far that isn't a complete idiot.

In this week's episode, my husband said he was surprised that Simba didn't have a PTSD type reaction to the way he fell into that sink hole since it was so similar to that scene with Mufasa in The Lion King. We also quite enjoyed Simba's dripping sarcasm while he was down there. It was awesome. He was being such a cat and Bunga deserved the comments being thrown at him. He should not have been disrespecting the king like he did and Simba is right. He needs to think before he does things instead of brainlessly rushing into them like he always does. It was nice that they bonded over being both raised by Timon and Pumbaa in the end though. As far as Timon and Pumbaa themselves though, wow were they being crybabies. Atimon posted a great comic about it on FA. Can't link to it here though because it's FA. The comic is harmless if you want to go look it up yourself though.

i just started watching this series and I'm very impressed! I like it a lot. Jasiri is my favorite character so far. :) Oh no, I feel another LK phase coming on... *starts to look for blind bags*

I found the animation to be super interesting. Styled to be 2D, but not. I would say they have pulled it off well. I have not noticed any funky-ness beside's a little stiffness in Ono's wings when he flies.

I LOVE Jasiri! I applaud the show for not falling into the trap of a lot of children's cartoons making all of one type of character the 'evil' ones. I am desperately awaiting the day she makes a reappearance. I'm sure she will sometime. :)

I don't notice the stiffness too much when Ono flies but I definitely notice it when Fuli runs. It's like her joints don't bend normally... Almost feels to me like when you see those shadow puppet shows that project a flat 2D puppet with hinged joints onto a silk screen? If you know what I mean.

I think the paws are drawn and animated strangely on Kion and his family and the fangs are too large and shown sometimes when they don't need to be. A top fang showing in a profile view especially as large as they're drawn in this show make the character look buck toothed. Those are the only problems I have with the style of the show. Aside from that and Simba, Nala and the hyenas looking on the small side, I really love this show.
Title: Re: The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar

My main disappointment is Simba's voice.  Sorry if I already griped about this, I can't remember LOL.  Anyway, he sounds too old and, I dunno, stiff?  Simba is a young father and, yeah, he can be overprotective (which he definitely was in Simba's Pride), but in TLG he sounds like a 50 year old dad.  There's nothing wrong with the lines they give him, it's just Rob Lowe's voice / delivery.  Nala also sounds too old, but her VA is otherwise good.

But overall I am really enjoying the show.  "Bunga and the King" was surprisingly touching . . . and very funny.  I loved Nala trying to tactfully explain that Bunga was "trying".  The family rendition of Hakuna Matata at the end was so sweet . . . I can just imagine Simba teaching the song to his kids when they were younger.

I kind of expected Bunga to stack up the broken wood to escape the hole, because real honey badgers will move around rocks and wood and stuff in order to reach bee hives and whatnot.

I just saw on Amazon that Disney is releasing a DVD with the episodes "Fuli's New Family," "Bunga the Wise", "Eye of the Beholder", "The Search for Utamu" and "never Judge a Hyena by its Spots."

I was hoping it would include "Can't Wait to be Queen" and "Bunga and the King" I will still probably buy it  just for the Jasari episode.

-bumps up an old thread-

So did anyone see the episode last week that had Zira, Vtani, Nuka, and Kovu? I've been looking forward to this episode since the rumors about it were going around the internet! I thought it was really cool that they got some of the voice actors from The Lion King 2 to reprise their characters after all these years.

The plot was okay. I thought it was a bit surprising that Zira was suddenly obsessed with lions being better than all the other creatures, since that didn't seem to really be a character motivation for her from the original movie, but I thought it was okay for this show. They couldn't really give her the motivation for avenging Scar's death, since that's a little dark for a cartoon aimed at very young kids.

It's called "Lions of the Outlands"!

I watched it last night!! I haven't watched any of The Lion Guard so far since it didn't really look like my sort of show, but I've always loved Kovu and his family (especially Vitani! She's my favourite!!) so I've been looking forward to this one :D It was SO GOOD, aaaa! I loved Zira's villain song, and how they got everyone's original VAs back! (Well mostly, obviously they had to re-cast Zira since her original VA died, but you know ^^;)

Yeah, Zira's sudden motivation change kinda threw me too, but I guess they had to tone her down a bit since TLG's meant for a younger audience than TLK2 was? I dunno. I'm so happy they brought them all back at last, though! I never expected to see Vitani show up in anything again, haha.

My favorite part/moment of that episode:
Spoiler
(basically)
Kovu: We may be able to go back to the pridelands? ... i could see Kiara again!

I really liked the episode, and although I wish Zira was more "Zira-like", it was nice to see/hear the characters again. I am confident this isnt the last we see them in the series. And this better mean that Disney is gonna release new merchandise for Kovu,Vitani,Nuka, Zira...and finally release something for Jasiri as well!

I watched "Lions of the Outlands" last night. I thought it was pretty good. :) I assume from what Kovou said that The Lion Guard takes place after Kiara and Kovou met when they were cubs but before Zira decided to train Kovou to kill Simba. Although I agree that Disney probably thought that having Zira planning to kill Simba was a little too deep for The Lion Guard's target audience.

Zira was already training Kovu to kill Simba when he met Kiara. After they had met, Zira said his training would intensify. Anyway it does sound like you're right about when this awesome episode took place. I enjoyed it so much. Was great to see them all again especially Nuka. Was cute how he tried to hide behind his little brother in one scene. I cannot get Zira`s new song out of my head.

You're right Kudoawai.  :) It's been a long time since I've seen Lion King 2 . i thought Nuka was pretty funny acting just like he does in Lion King 2 ,  jealous of Kovou being chosen over him and wanting to please Zira.

I was surprised that Zira was able to manipulate Kion so easily into believing he would lose the roar if he used it against other lions.

I wish Disney would have figured out a way to explain it. Even something as simple as Mufasa appears to Kion more because he has the roar of the elders but then that still wouldn't explain why Mufusa didn't come to Simba in Simba's pride when he was asking  for advice about Kovou.

Well consider this:

Simba was an adult. By that point he had learned a lot of life lessons from the first film. Mufasa likely wanted Simba to figure it out for himself.
Kion is a cub, he is young and still needs his guidance.

I watched Fridays episode with the gorillas. It's a little odd hearing dan and phil's voices in a cartoon, though. It kept coming off just slight odd to me, like it didn't fit. I'm not sure if it's because I knew them previously from youtube or what.

You will have to see and find out :D

One thing that has irked me about newer releases of Simba's Pride is in the original video, after Simba, Kovu and Kiara are making their way to Pride Rock after Simba grudgingly decides to give him a chance, they cut out the millisecond long part where Kovu growls at Simba's back but then smiles back at Kiara right afterwards. That part is only a few seconds long but is so important and chock full of meaning.

I have the first Simba's Pride release, I believe (the two disc DVD special edition set), and that part was kept in. Plus, I remember that scene in the original VHS as well.
but I am not surprised to hear that they've cut down that part. They edited their Kiki's Delivery Service dub when they released it on BluRay/DVD combo pack (but the original 2004 DVD release was left unchanged).

The two disc special edition would've been the second release. The first release in 1998 was only a one-disc dvd and of course VHS. Glad to hear that small but important part was kept in the special edition^^

I only have the original VHS of Simba's Pride. I just put it in the VCR and the quality is terrible at least on my copy. My copy wasn't rewound last time I watched it and it was right at the part where Simba banished Kovu after the ambush.

I'm not sure why they would cut Kovu growling at Simba's back and then smiling at Kiara out. Kovu didn't attack Simba in that scene and like Koudoawaia said you can tell so much about Kovu in those few seconds.
