I'm excited!

i need coco tho ...

also wondering how well they will customize

I would have loved a reg. size brushable Coco but...the articulation is a bit odd and the cutie mark doesn't seem to fit well. I think I'll have to pass.
I'm sure lots of people will be excited about her and Tank though!

Added Pinkie's swan boat.

Oh wow I hope that swan boat is from an episode. Really ponies should just be in swan boats all the time.

very cool!
i'll be getting pinkie, but probably sell off the swan boat. too big for my taste.

(i'll get twilight and dash too. though dash will become a flash sentry for my collection. mwhahahahaha)

That swan boat is insanely cute.
I think the same about this. ^.^

It seems the ponies have mismatched body colors. The ability to move the figure is cool but I agree with Flitter...it looks "odd" ...someway like a robot? :|

I can't wait to see these in stores, they look so strange and awkward but I'm pleased Hasbro is being brave with this new direction. ^.^

edit: I just noticed that Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash have open mouths!  lol

Yeah, they look odd, but it is also the kind of odd I love! This is the very first time I actually like a G4 brushable, and even if I'm not a big fan of thw mane 6 I'll have to get some of them (which ones? Hnmmm)

Articulation has never been a big deal with ponies, maybe they are trying to make up for the lack of poses?

I'll be more than happy to grab one of these and fiddle with her

I'm actually really excited for these :D

I'm in the "They look odd category" here.  The colors of the different parts don't seem to match and the joints don't look good.  I think part of it might be the size.  The joints needed are too big to be inconspicuous on such small ponies.  Articulation is a cool concept, but the actually product isn't visually pleasing to me.

These are one of those things I feel like we need to see people make their own poses and post pictures to see how they look.

Also a regular starlight without ribbon I'll be getting this one, wave 1 explore equestria (come on hasbro youre not exploring much in equestria yet, hopefully with wave 2..?)

I won't be getting any since I'm down sizing... But they look fun for kids.

I just noticed their cutie marks - a little weird but doesn't affect my overall impressions.  I'm actually excited for a new line!  These have reignited my love for G4.   :newpony:

I think this is a great idea, although their implementation does look clunky.  I like to pose things a lot personally, so this is nice.  Maybe the final product will look less awkward, stranger things have happened!

I'm hoping they'll look less awkward, too!

I'm very excited for this. I love posing and playing around with my anime figures, now I can do it with ponies! :frolic:

Post by: Carrehz on October 07, 2015, 05:23:35 AM
Mm, I like the idea but the actual execution looks kinda wonky to me :( Joints just look weird on such tiny figures. Not a fan of the awkwardly-placed symbols, either, so I'll prolly pass on these (which is a shame since I'd be all over Coco if she was a regular brushable). It's cool to see them branching out a bit, though.

New Starlight <3 I wish I'd known she was getting re-released, I prolly would've waited to get her (not a fan of the ribbon hair).

And omg the boat!!! I LOVE it!!! I'm not usually a playset person but I,need this :D.

I'll wait till I can see them in stores. Articulation can be hit or miss with four footed creatures. I do wish they would have extended the flank articulation, since those legs look the oddest.

I think this is Hasbro's way of saying "Well they want ponies in more poses, lets give them leg articulations to quiet them for now."

So far I would have to only give them a C for effort and an I don't know till I personally see it for everything else.

Post Merge: October 07, 2015, 05:32:07 AM

I also noticed something but it's hard to see.. Dash and Fluttershy look like they have open mouths.

And I'm curious about the wings.. though not Twilight's because... yeah...

But I would like to get one soon just to review it XD

They sort of creep me out but I'll have to wait to see them in someone's actual posed photos before fully judging.  :lookround:
Title: Re: Articulated Ponies!!!
Post by: Al-1701 on October 07, 2015, 05:53:57 AM
I think this proves that G4 ponies are way too thin.  Even looking at the non-articulated ponies, the cutie marks go two far down the leg because they have almost to haunch.  Similarly, there is no haunch to the articulated ponies, it's just a narrow leg.

These people need to go to a farm and actually look at a pony and how they move.

I wouldn't have liked these as a kid, the joints would have bothered me.

Oooh!! Good thing I didn't buy Starlight from China yet!! XD but those headbands are so cute!!! :3

But these articulated ponies are ugly  :| I only see em as potential custom meat, but I doubt that'll be possible because of the body "mechanics". So in the end, PASS.

The only problem I see with these ones is knowing that Hasbro always goes the cheap route, those joints could not stand poses very well...

Also, I'm getting Applejack.

I like them because they remind me of bjds. I swear I saw someone working on a homemade Luna that had similar joints.

For those who are unsure about how the joints look, perhaps custom pony wear?

I always said the only thing that would get me back into G4 were nicely articulated ponies, so I'm definitely intrigued. I agree that they look a bit clunky, but still cute. I can't wait for owner pics/reviews to see how well they can pose.

That swan boat is super cute, too.

I'm so torn.  I've been pushing for more brushables, but...  eeeeehhhh...

I think I'll get AJ and Coco, though!  A) I want to support the brushables, and B) I'd love to try and put AJ in an apple-bucking position for display lol.

I'm partial to the argument that [the ribbon brushables] are just being put out to sell their codes in this upcoming mobile app, and once that's over with, they can move on to other characters. Time will tell if it's right or not, of course, but in the meantime these are pretty easy to read as contractual obligation and nothing more.
Well, I lose.

Well they are always going to have some of the Mane 6 since they are the stars of the show. At least there is one new-ish character and hopefully there will be more new regular brushables since they are at least adding newbies to the gimmick lines.

Yeah, the repeat mane 6 again is kind of a downer, but at least this means we can get Starlight without a ribbon, and a cute little bow. Hopefully, though, they can push out some new characters.

It just dawned on me what the legs look like to me. They make me think of the legs of a crab.  :|

Starlight Glimmer; Aw man it's going to be tough to wait for the EE ver. once the CMM ver. hits stores. I think I'd prefer her without the ribbon though.

I have a feeling the bodies are hard plastic and maybe almost built like the shine brights or crystal motion ponies were built

has anyone noticed that the wings on the 3 are 100% different?
Twilight's is obvious but I didn't noticed how Fluttershy's and RD's wings were till I saw those single photos.

Fluttershy's is thinner and looks like it belonged to another set of ponies, plus are actually on her back
RD's is the thick like the normal ponies, but her wings are attached like Twilight's and look like they are positioned at the elbows...

Should they, though? We've seen how they move and sit in the show, so I don't see these toys as being any different from that.

Yes, they look wonky but I really don't think kids are going to care about that. They're toys and I definitely had my fair share of toys that could be put in unnatural poses when I was younger.

Call me crazy but I'm sure if parents really want their kids to learn how horses actually move, they can get them books or more accurate toys for that reason. Or, you know, show them videos of horses that aren't animated.
Title: Re: Articulated Ponies!!!
Post by: Dreamer on October 08, 2015, 08:16:58 AM
Well, I think their articulation range will be good for those who want natural horse poses (I suppose they will be able to trot and rear?) and more wacky and cartoonish poses for the kids who see the show :)
New questions about them, will they be able to stand on two legs? I hope so, but I won't hold my expectations high.
Title: Re: Articulated Ponies!!!
Post by: Rainbowrific Renia on October 08, 2015, 08:55:04 AM
Their heads don't seem to be very poseable, so I'd imagine they'd fall over backward if you tried to stand them up on two legs due to the weight. Plus they'd always be looking up.

Although, is it just me, or does that Pinkie with the swan boat seem to have more of a neck than the other toys?

Hmm, this is a really interesting idea. I love the idea of poseable ponies, like action figures, and it ties in nicely with the show where the ponies do all sorts of things besides just standing and walking! I wonder if they'd have been better if they were slightly larger, perhaps, more like G1/G3 size? better/subtler joints, and then if the rump were bigger the cutie mark could go there instead of on the leg. I do like G4 but the standard size ponies are so wee compared to my earlier generations.

Still, I like that Starlight especially...I love her design and color scheme, even if the character was not very nice!

I doubt it, unless they are not head heavy.. which they likely will be and there won't be enough weight in the tail to balance them out... Unless the person was making them stand straight up which would make them look strange to do no other joints xD

I also noticed this.. the first photos we saw of these before the loose version from Tao.. RD's wings are like Fluttershy's.. So I'm wondering which version we'll get.

I've never been a fan of articulated ponies, but these seem especially odd to me somehow. I think it has to do with the overall leg shape, even though skinny-on-top-wide-on-bottom is "show accurate". When the unnatural shape is given such noticeable segmentation, it gives a very insectoid or robotic look to the whole thing that's rather off-putting. (Although perfect for a Peridot pony! Yes please!)

Love the swan boat, though! It reminds me a bit of the Enchanta from She-Ra. If only they'd gone with the Sea Harp, we could've had a kinda-sorta sea pony toy at long last.

I noticed something weird about the static brushable waves. Only the first wave of ribbon ponies (AJ, Pinkie, RD, and Rarity) are available on EE and BBTS. The only wave with Starlight Glimmer and zapcode FS is the new one with the bow headbands. I wonder if the ribbons were poorly received at Toy Fair so they replaced the second wave of those with the bow ones.

I'm also dying to see these in person-  I really like the way the leg joints look. I kinda wish they'd tried this with the larger ponies (but then I guess they'd probably be expensive)

So glad they are trying something new- I hope the kids like them :D  (I think they will, just think how popular MH is compared to Barbie now- kids LIKE poseable toys)

Probably it would have looked better with larger ponies, but those are brushable/playful size, right? If it's like that, I'll get them anyway. I don't have space for Fashion Styles.

OH MAN if i was a kid i would be ALL OVER those articulated ponies!  I mean they kind of look "less cute" but for ACTUAL PLAY, they would be amazing.  Not enough G4 poses?  Now there are infinite poses!  Also the swan boat?  Super cute

I'm still not sure about the wings... The way they are planted on Twilight are awkward to me and just the placement annoys me. Not fond of Fluttershy's either as they seem flimsy but I would have to see the finals in the stores

Sight seeing I'm assuming is the ones with the pets.

So we are getting
Twilight
Fluttershy
RD x2
AJ

Pinkie

so i bought some off ebay. probably paid more than they will cost in stores, but i want to see if they are something i can customize.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

fluttershy has a trigger action, so i'm not sure if i'll be able to use her. probably either sell her or give her to my niece for Christmas. twilight is staying as is and coco will be the one i experiment on. *evil laugh* curious to see if they will take dye or if the code on the ponies are legit. still not even sure if you can take them apart. but i thought it was worth a try.
if anyone wants to know about the process i'll try to keep photo documentation, but i won't post it here unless asked, plus i'm not sure if that would be off topic. either way. very excited to get these girls.

let me know if anyone wants to buy fluttershy off me. she was 10$ so until she hits stores that's what i'm asking.

I'm guessing they won't take dye very well since they look like hard plastic.  I'll be interested to see your experiments! :)

Don't give up so easily. You might still be able to customize Fluttershy. I have taken apart one of the light up ponies once to customize and if those can be taken apart I'm sure Flutters can since it's probably not even electronic.

For dye you might need to use something like Rit iDye Poly. People have had lots of success with it dying dolls that never took dye well before.

oh cool. yeah i have a lot of rit dye, but i'd be happy to try this one too. i want to turn fluttershy into flash sentry, and if it work, i'll get another to make into an oc. both are darker than yellow so dying should work.
i'll still use coco as my guinea pig. she gets to be baby blossom and a second one for baby stripes.
then they'll be part of my illustrious army. mwhahahah

Pretty much my thoughts on it. I'll get Coco, though. :)

the hinges are like ball joints, they can rotate 360 and they bend back and forth.  Much like other Hasbro action figures, sorta like the Hero Mashers, (though I didn't try to pull them apart)
They don't click or ratchet.  The plastic has a silky surface.

other questions?  She's an xmas present so I won't be "completely" unboxing till later. ;)

I personally think the hind legs should be thicker at the top near the rump, but I see that it would limit movement.

I hope they make lots more of these.

Some of the ponies look awfully-buff like "Errr.... You ok there, sugarcube?" but regardless, it's hasbro trying something new (I think they saw the love of MH and other BJDs, so they're seeing if we'll like them mixed with ponies) and with new things come more new ideas to show us! (Still hoping for more boy ponies. I can only imagine how play-time goes for kids with only Shining Armor as the boy pony)

I'll be getting Fluttershy and Coco Pommel when I can afford to do so (Fluttershy for the army, and Coco for the brushable collection)

I'm with you, boy ponies is what I want. They have so many male characters they could do a couple of waves of only boys but hey we know that will never happen. However I digress ....

Articulated ponies!

Now I've seen more pictures I'm a bit more sold on these. I like that they are obviously trying something new at least! And I kind of like that ope mouth head some of them have. I will get fluttershy at least, and the symbol on the leg isn't even as annoying as I though it would be. The only thing I really don't like about these is the short thick neck. It would have been nice if their necks were a little longer.

I picked up articulated AJ, (wanted free shipping on my amazon order), and FYI she's different than CoCo because her legs are spring loaded! In addition to the knees bending she has a built in kicking gimmick.  I'm 90% Cocos doesn't, I would have remembered that.

Interesting. I know that they are split up in two different sets but I never knew the action ones had an additional gimmick. So if Im right then the sets are like this:
Normal (No extra gimmick)
- Coco Pommel
- Rainbow Dash (Sightseeing)
- Twilight Sparkle

Action ones:
- Rainbow Dash (With Tank)
- Applejack
- Fluttershy

I have my CoCo opened and will probably open AJ next month.  I really love them.  I'm an odd-ball saying this.. but I wish ALL G4s were jointed like this.  They are fun to pose!  I'll be making a Brags post this week. I'll put a link here when I do.

(my biggest gripe, though it's about al new G4s is that the hair is different... it squeaks when you comb it and goes all frayed so easily, it doesn't flow nicely like G4s a few years ago, I tried to fix CoCos, I'll include that in my Brag.)

It may just be the BJD collector in me talking, but I'm actually totally into these ponies and love the way their joints look! They definitely seem to be a response to Silverbeam's awesome printed bjd ponies, but I guess it just mean's Hasbro's on the up and up. I wasn't planning on collecting any particular G4 set, but I might have to make an exception for these :3

can't seem to get past the peanut shaped bodies and crustacean-like legs  ^^;

Open coco for customization. Found That the head comes off nicely and can easily be rehaired but the body will be a little more difficult to take apart I'm thinking I'll probably cut the tail off and just make a new tail stub, and glue it into the hole. Otherwise I'm not sure how these can be customized easily.  love to see what other people find, I'll try to post my pictures tonight, meaning tomorrow

I haven't gotten these but in regards to the hair, i know that the G4 bagged ponies had non-nylon tails (possibly polypropylene,). Found that little information out with a dye test of one pony (Rarity was the test subject). Do you guys think that they may have switched to that kind of hair for these releases?

They are everywhere here and we have had them since around Thanksgiving! Some are $7.99 and the slightly bigger accessory ones are $9.99 I think! Like every single Target has 6 different kinds! Allen, Fairview, Plano, Frisco, and Richardson  Targets all have em! I have only bought Coco and Twilight so far because I've been buying tsum tsums at Target! xD I have pictures on my IG but can post here if you guys want! I have pictures of all of them in-store

It seems like a lot of stuff pops up in Texas (and California) earlier than here. I remember last year that someone found the Rainbow Power singles that never showed up anywhere else in the US but Texas.

I threw away the tail but to answer your question, poly has a different texture for sure. It' a bit courser and not as smooth as Nylon. As for the dye test, poly will not take -any- dye. Normally someone would try normal Rit dye on ponies or hair. I tried RIT Dyemore for synthetics and it's supposed to work on synthetic materials.. Case in point, I could not dye my polyester ribbon with normal RIT dye but I was able to dye it with RIT Dyemore.. and I was able to dye a lock of holloween wig hair (which again will not take normal RIT dye)

http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,375358.msg1489519.html#msg1489519 that is the topic on the dye test.. I still need to do another test but I don't have another older Rarity to test with ^^;

OK. Update.  The Pegasus Ponies that are poseable don't have poseable wings.  At least not the RD one with Red shoes.

These look like skeleton ponies to me because of the articulation. Especially Coco- she is bone colored!

She's one of the basic ones, i think people were talking about the more expensive version with Tank.

I'm not entirely impressed with these. I got Coco and Pinkie with the swan boat, but those are still in their boxes. I took Rainbow Dash out of her box, so I could take out Tank and... ugh, the articulation is strange. I honestly only got her because Hasbro is dumb sometimes and Rainbow Dash is the only EqG mini that doesn't have her pet. But I figured it'd be nice to add the articulated RD to my army anyway.

Not sure I'll be picking up any more of these, unless they come with neat accessories like Pinkie and her boat.

I wasn't that impress either.. I got Coco and let me just say the hair styling is not working out.. I haven't tested but I do thing her hair is in fact poly.. one of my friends who sells doll hair said there is a test I could do to see if the hair is poly but my mind already thinks it is..

I agree with the Articulation. It's awkward at best..

does this mean all the new ponies have this new (horrible) type of hair?

Don't know.. maybe, maybe not.. I would think that if they changed the hair at all they should at least go with Saran type hair.. could be they are trying to make production cost less for them...

Post Merge: January 15, 2016, 07:37:24 PM

I did just do a little bit of a test..

My friend said to try what I would call a 'sink or float' test.. According to her Nylon hair sinks while Polypropylene floats... So I grabbed an old tail I had laying around from a pony I never put back together due to the pony having cancer and I haven't decided what to do with her.. Anyway, filled a container with water and set a small portion of the tail in.. Of course like most things it sat on top of the water, but once i prodded it into the water it pretty much sunk to the bottom of the container... Now I took Coco and did the same thing with her mane... I was hoping it was going to sink but apparently even prodding it a few times after getting it submerged it still floated to the top.. so with this I assume it's Polypropylene... but I'm not sure if there is other ways to test other than feel and dye... and well I cannot dye this pony's hair unless I plan on customizing her... and I'm not an expert on how other types of Poly hair feel...

Interesting! Thanks for sharing.  off topic, but maybe I will try that with the ribbon hair AJ I got recently and see if it floats too.

Worth a shot.. the tail is harder to test while on the pony because it is kind of short XD

unless you want to completely submerge the pony.. I'm tempted to do that with Coco.. but I was worried about the possible washer holding the tail..

Yes this!

It just dawned on me what the legs look like to me. They make me think of the legs of a crab.  :|

Starlight Glimmer; Aw man it's going to be tough to wait for the EE ver. once the CMM ver. hits stores. I think I'd prefer her without the ribbon though.

Lol, I like the "sort of sitting" pose. It seems like an odd position one may have to take when crammed into a packed airplane.

*lols* Yes it does

I would love to make a 3D printed pony to compete with this girl but sadly the material offered through our library is terrible for that kind of thing
Maybe one day Hasbro will get them kind of right

Haha, thanks!  I ordered a bunch of the "basic" ones from Taobao, especially Pinkie Pie because I don't need a million swan boats!   Once they get here I have a few planned, mostly more G1 -> G4, like Bonnie Bonnets, North Star, Crumpet, as well as G2 Sky Skimmer.  I have a couple other dioramas in progress and they just work so much better in that setting, imo.

I saw these recently bur not sure about them yet! I wouldn't mind getting one maybe if bit cheaper on sale or something. But the ones I saw were quite expensive for what they are I think. Can get articulated Equestria girls dolls for cheaper where I live so they seem overpriced at the moment to me.

Title: Re: Articulated Ponies!!!

I had success with my Pinkie's hair - by running water over it right after deboxing her. No shampoo, no brushing, just water and leaving her alone. (She's available for sale/trade, by the way //shameless self-promotion) Can't help with styling, but maybe that will keep it neat and nice on display, at least.

The heads are made of the same material as normal G4 heads, so you can use any method you would normally use on them.  The tails are a little trickier, since you probably want to dismantle them to remove the old tail.  I do have a tutorial in the Customs forum (thread located here (http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,376484.0.html)) that shows how to take them apart to completely replace a tail.

I really like that they are poseable, the only real downside seems to be the cheap fakie hair they come with.
