Pony Corral / Re: Ask the Experts: G1 Applejack with Orange Apples???
« on: October 02, 2012, 02:38:08 PM »
Yup, faded. It's the red pigment in the paints that fade which is why purple turns into blue, pink turns to white, red turns to yellow (through orange). It can happen very evenly, I can attest. I know for certain my childhood Applejack had red apples when I first got him, and over these last couple of decades his apples have slowly gone a very even orange on both sides.

I went to drop in on my sister one day and was only there for maybe 15 minutes. When I was leaving, right in the middle of her drive was a vaguely pony shaped mess that certainly wasn't there before. Either Moonstone or Windy by the dingy hair colours and pose but she was so caked with muck I couldn't tell more then that. It turns out that her neighbour's dog had found it somewhere and claimed it, but it was strange how she just appeared in the drive as though left for me to find. I claimed her and gave the dog a proper chew toy. ten years later I still have her, still not sure how exactly I want to fix her up, but I'm certainly keeping her.

Many many years ago I also got a surprise pony from the guy I was dating at the time. He had been helping his friend donate a sofa to a local thrift store and as they were moving it into the back of the store he somehow picked out a pony across the room in a dust pile in the corner. This guy was a complete punk, right down to the huge green shaved mohawk and shock value clothes. Well he stopped on the spot holding up this sofa and started demanding that someone "Get the pony! Get the pony!" I can only imagine the image for the employees. Since she had been swept into the corner to be thrown away, they gave her to him and he brought her home for me. I actually have traded her on since then because the memories of that relationship are bad and she reminded me of it, but I did make sure she's not to be baited and told her rescue story to her new owner.

This is a tricky one. If she was a factory error then removing the head will also remove any evidence that she was other then your account. But I can also tell you that I myself replace tails by putting them back through the hole without the washer. As long as you push it in past where it should be and then gently tug one side back out a bit it twists the metal clamp sideways and actually does stand up to tugging. As for the washer, I've found them wedged into the bottoms of feet before and therefore not rattling so that's not a foolproof way of checking either. I've also encountered washers so rusted they crumble away into flakes and dust too small to rattle.

It occurs that you may be able to check if the washer is still around the tail by heating the plastic around it enough to be able to squish around the tail hole. If the washer is still there you should be able to feel it that way. That may be the only definitive way to know without actually removing the head.

One of my last childhood ponies! And by childhood I mean pony I bought in a store when they were on shelves, I was fresh into high school when I got her. I didn't really like the pink on orange combo, but it was getting hard to find ponies in stores so I snapped her up. I do prefer her with white hair but I'm certainly not going to fade mine just because I prefer it that way.

It's the stars embedded in their translucent bodies that do the glowing. It's quite a neat effect and makes each one totally unique. Each individual Starglow has her own special constellation!

Pony Corral / Re: Can Gingerbread be saved? First experience with mold :(
« on: September 28, 2012, 08:34:18 PM »
There isn't a whole lot you can do. This is a known issue for Gingerbread and you will be hard pressed to find one without at least a few patches. It has to do with the makeup of her plastic and as she ages she slowly breaks down and gains discoloured patches. The way that the plastic breaks down and separates is what attracts the mold or bacteria, which then causes further problems like what's going on with yours with the small dark dots in the middle of larger discolouration. The best you can do is wash her more often then you normally would to get rid of bacteria which is unfortunately all around us and unavoidable in normal households.

Gingerbread is one of my childhood ponies and similar to the new set you've just received, mine is breaking down slowly while the rest of my ponies are just fine. I was always particularly fussy about caring for my ponies and most are perfectly mint in comparison. I guess my fussiness is the reason why she doesn't have any bacteria spots, just going an off colour. She was kept together with all my others just like your new batch was, so I can assure you the plastic breakdown in itself is not contagious.

I have heard of people "restoring" cancer-ridden ponies by painting over the spots with the body colour. While this is like slapping tape over a leaking cup and declaring it fixed, at least it makes her display worthy. The underlying problem will still be... underlying... but it's an out of sight out of mind situation for some people.

Love the Glow n' Shows!

I've found two blue heart Dazzleglows, Brightglow, and of course Starglow all in thrift shops, then acquired a friend's childhood Brightglow, but somehow the most common one Happyglow still eludes me.

Here's to Starglow loving:

Wow. I'm curious if the ones on the shelves right now are old pink stock or the new white ones. I haven't been in a TRU since the sale happened, I'm still a little bitter that mine didn't get in Zecora before it ended. I can't afford $15 for a single right now.

Pony Corral / Re: Different versions of G1 Spike?
« on: September 24, 2012, 01:52:25 PM »
I have often wondered where the information originally came from. How do we know for sure that the two castles had different Spikes? Was it just an assumption originally that caught on as fact or was there some sort of proof back in the day? I honestly don't know, but with all the various hues of Spike floating around I have debated if all of them are just due to different batches and not necessarily different versions. Does anyone know how the information that there are two castle versions entered the community?

I've inspected the two of mine and I think I have a very fortunate setup actually. They are both a very similar state of tan, but the discolouration of one is very even while the other is more splotchy. The splotchier one does have one area with the small dark brown spot and lighter patch around it. So I can do the acetone method with her and the sunburning method with the other one. I've got lots of before pictures of the splotchier one, I'll have to see about getting similar documentation of the other, and some pics together so I can compare them to each other down the road.

I've been rather disappointed by the lack of them considering we've been getting sets that came out after they did and that we often get new G4 waves before the Americans do. A month ago a Walmart employee informed me that the new ponies were in the back and they were going to put them out when they changed the display to its new location. I verified with her that they were NEW, not just more of the same ones we already had. I promised someone in Europe all four based on that and when the display got changed the next week it turned out the NEW ponies were the Blind Bags, bridesmaids, wedding RC car, Glimmer Wings, all the other deluxes, sets, and extras that are meant to go along with that wave..... and more of the old mane six with invitations singles wave.

*sigh*

Pony Corral / Re: Show some Bonnie Bonnets appreciation
« on: September 23, 2012, 02:34:50 PM »
It's interesting that half of the Bonnie Bonnets in this thread are frizzy or reported as frizzy. I wonder if she's prone to it? My own Bonnie Bonnets I got years ago from my sister who lives across the country but still watches thrift shops for ponies to give me. I was thrilled with her and decided to rehair, but It's been a decade since I did that and I have nothing to do it with so she just keeps getting put off, the poor dear. As you can see, she's suffering from some crazy hat-head.

With all these lovely pictures I really want to get to work on her soon! I should look into Dollyhair for her and several other patiently waiting...

This is very interesting. I have two extra Gingerbreads in terrible (bait, only I'd never bait her) condition. One is already a light tan colour and I was planning to try sunfading her dispite the risks because of her condition. Now I think I'll try this method and report my findings with her.

I agree completely about plastic breakdown attracting bacteria, that's why I usually think bacteria in these cases. I had thought the discoloration to be caused by the bacteria getting in there and partying, which would be the cause of the spot in the middle. I had assumed the plastic breakdown itself would be evenly coloured which is why I never considered it. Thanks for the informative theory.

Many people believe that to be a type of mold, but I personally believe it to be a form of bacteria that does this. Unfortunately Gingerbread is indeed very prone to cancer. This has to do with how the plastic is breaking down for her and has attracted the mold or bacteria to come have a feast. Scrub her inside and out with Dawn dishsoap. Dawn brand has antimicrobials instead of just anitbacterials, so it's good for either of the causes. This will kill off the existing bacteria and mold so those spots won't spread further but it won't remove the discolouration from it. If you're really nervous about it you could follow up with a bleach bath as that also kills of organic things. The bad news is that since Gingerbread is prone to these problems it's very easy for her to start developing new ones. You will need to continue to wash her every once in a while just in case.

As for getting rid of the spots themselves, some people have had some luck with sunfading, others not. However, Gingerbread is also prone to "sunburning" and may go a tan or brown colour if you do try sunfading her. In general she's just an unlucky pony!

Pony Corral / Re: G2 fakies?
« on: September 22, 2012, 07:08:18 PM »
Oh interesting! It looks that other pink one there is a different brand of fakie based on the eyes. These two white ones have just one purple colour for both symbol and eyes, but that pink one has three colours for her eyes... but then again, I just dug mine out to inspect and she also has a second "Made in China" stamp on her hoofbottoms like described on that pink one. Considering how poor quality mine is I almost wonder if she's a fakie of the other fakie. Or maybe the same company decided to cheap out on the paint even further.

Other notes on close inspection which don't show well in the picture:
The green and blue are actually slightly different colours between the tail and the mane.
The symbols (yes on both sides) are much more vivid then the eyes.
The plastic of the head is quite hard, while the plastic of the body is squishy and if you look hard enough there's actually teeny flecks of glitter in the body plastic. The glitter is so minuscule you don't notice it until looking closely.
Her tail is rooted plugs in the usual fakie way. She's got a circle of blue plugs, then a row of green added over the top of the circle.

I don't believe she's a prototype because of the way her feet are stamped (Hasbro would have still used their moulds), the rooted tail, the monotone eyes (not even white tamped there), and the cheapness of the plastic. Plus she can't stand and wouldn't be great for product shots.

As for the question of trading her... well I'm just not sure. I'm not heavily into G2s OR fakies so I really should pass her on, but somehow her uniqueness has appealed to me and she's never made it on to my trade list. I'd have to think about parting with her.

edit: Another note on prototypes. I'm in Canada and dede88 is in NZ, although technically possible two prototypes somehow made it to two different countries, I highly doubt it.
