Pony Corral / Re: Retro rereleases and how to do them right
« on: February 15, 2016, 11:01:22 PM »
The repros are actually noticeably different from the original FFs as well? They're smaller and their head is even lower.

Here's a couple pics of an original FF, a 2007 repro, and a concave foot pony side by side for comparison:

Probably not enough of an appearance difference to bother people, but the repros have significantly worse balance than the original FFs which can make them frustrating to own/play with/display. Mine used to topple face first off my shelf in the middle of the night  They could've been made much better, imo.

I don't own any of these myself so i can't check, but did they use the FF mould as a base, instead of the revised collector pose?  That would explain the tipping; the original FF's are only semi-stable because of their very heavy tail washers - without them, they go nose down at the slightest touch.

The collectors pose repros were flat footed, yes. I tried opening one once to try and weight down their back legs and found that they had plastic washers, too. So that explains the tipping over all the time.  >_<

I think more accurate to original packaging would've been a better hit with the repros too, though. I was only 12 or so when they did the collector pose rereleases, but by that age I'd already read about previous generations online so I was super excited to be able to "buy old ponies from the store just like kids in the 80s would have!", so I think there's a market for slightly older children with repros as well? I was so incredibly disappointed when stores here never got the rainbow ponies, so I really wish Hasbro has tried a little harder to make them more accessible, like packaging them singly to make them easier nostalgia-impulse buys for adults. $15 on ponies at once was a lot as a kid

Price Check Archives / PC on some g4s? (nfs)
« on: February 15, 2016, 09:41:19 PM »
I was wondering about the values of some g4 brushables. I'm trying to catalogue my collection and include approximate replacement values, and I'm still familiar with approximate g1-3 values but I haven't been involved in any pony communities in a long time so I'm quite clueless about the few g4s I've collected.

Muffin
Lyra Heart Strings
Lyrica Lilac
Ploomette (glitter wings)
Trixie Lulamoon (single)
Wysteria
Chrysalis
Nightmare Moon (not sure which multipack she's from)
Silver Spoon
Sunset Shimmer (single)
Sweetie Swirl

Thank you!

(edited to add a pony)

Pony Corral / Re: Does Divine Shine Secret Wish have fading pink hair?
« on: February 15, 2016, 01:12:01 PM »
I seem to recall g3 having two very similar pink hair shades, one was the usual fading pink, and the other looked like almost the exact same colour, but slightly more... fluorescent? And it didn't fade nearly as easily. I just grabbed a couple ponies to compare and I believe Secret Wish has the latter type of light pink hair. :)

Is it just me, or do some of them look less proportionate than others?

I would probably buy at least Firefly though, her wings seem to balance out the big head a little better to me

Looks like that's Pretzel on the left from her cutie mark. I quite like her, she reminds me of g3 Sparkleworks?

Which leaves the middle one here as Sapphire Joy? I also like how Sea Swirl looks more purpley than pink.  So glad for some new brushies!

Edit: I wonder if these are pearly plastic like a lot of g3s were, or done with a pearlescent coating like the g1 pearlized babies?

Pony Corral / Re: Who was your very first pony?
« on: February 14, 2016, 12:35:47 AM »
These are all such nice stories!

I got four "first ponies". I remember pretty clearly that I was 7, and I'd just finished grade 2 so it was summer of 2003 right when g3 launched, and my parents brought me to the local TRU so i could pick out a couple of toys as a reward for getting a good report card.
We were kind of just wandering through the store (I was just "getting over" Barbies so I didn't have a "type" of toy) when Razzaroo really caught my eye, and I was like, wait I found someting I like!  My parents said the sign said that there was a sale, something like "buy a playset, get a single pony 50% off", so I could get both of the playsets and choose two of the single ponies if they were something I really liked. I looked around and found the other playset with Moondancer, and then I chose Sunny Daze (she looked so bright and pretty up on that highest peg!), and Rainbow Dash.
Here's my original crew as of a few days ago ^.^

The whole time I was trying to choose, my mum kept telling me to "get the orange one!" so a couple weeks later, we ended up back at the store and she bought me Sparkleworks too because she liked her that much. :P

Pony Corral / Re: Age spots and regrind on g3s already?
« on: February 12, 2016, 03:01:32 PM »
I've seen some really badly discolored glitter-boded G3's and have come across some that were pretty sticky. (Nom nom nom) Alas they're made of plastic and will be susceptible to breakdown...

True, the glitter ponies seem especially prone to breakdown. I wonder what contributes to some g3s breaking down so quickly? I have two of the bright pink glitter pony (Secret Wish?), and the one I picked out myself from the store when I was young is doing great, but the one I got in a lot from a friend hours away has almost no glitter left and is almost entirely orange.

Pony Corral / Age spots and regrind on g3s already?
« on: February 12, 2016, 02:27:27 PM »
The other day I took some ponies out of a plastic bin in my closet to switch out my display, and upon unpacking a few I noticed that some of my g3s had acquired spots on their plastic in the last few months?

They were mostly brownish-black looking spots on purple ponies, and a few also had spots that were lightening to a pinkish colour. I tried to get pictures, but my apartment lighting wouldn't cooperate. The spots wouldn't come off, and the pink spots looked incredibly similar in nature to my regrind-y g1s.

They were stored very carefully. Each pony was wrapped with tissue, and those with hair colours know to transfer like chartreuse were also placed in (unsealed, to prevent trapping moisture) ziploc bags. They were in a plastic tote, in my own closet, and I live in a very dry climate, so my only guess is that they're beginning to have aging problems? Has anyone else experienced age related issues with their g3s already? (ok, maybe "already" isn't quite right, these things are 13 years old now and I'm just trying not to make myself feel too old :P)

Pony Corral / Re: Cleaning and restoration problems

Along with the already mentioned advice for frizzy hair, I'd also recommend massaging some olive oil into the pony's hair and letting it sit for a couple hours. As for smooze, after a good bath, run your pony under very hot water for about 30 seconds to a minute, and then lather them up in some regular liquid handsoap, and you should be able to scratch the smooze off with a fingernail or similar tool. Just keep repeating the heating up + lathering process each time the pony cools down too much for the scratching to work. It can be time consuming for serious cases but it yields great results in my experience! :)

Introductions / Hi there!
« on: February 11, 2016, 04:48:33 PM »
Hi! I'm Cynthia. I know it sounds girly, but I'd appreciate if people could use gender neutral language in reference to me, ie "they" instead of he/she, "person" instead of man/woman. :)

I'm 20 years old, and I started collecting g3 ponies as a 7 year old kid when they hit stores, but around highschool I had also moved into collecting g1-2 ponies secondhand. I love restoring the really beat up ones! I'm not big on g4 but I still try to scrounge up some new pony fun when finances allow. :9 I have around 350 ponies total, I think? g3s and g1 restoration projects are definitely the majority round these parts, though. ^.^

I'm from western Canada & I'm struggling with my health right now, but when health permits I'm planning to go to law school, and I'd like to live abroad at some point. My non pony hobbies are drawing, writing, cosplay, cooking, and I'd like to get into videogame design eventually!

Looking forward to chatting about ponies with everyone here!
