Mayonnaise or Miracle Whip?
« on: August 29, 2016, 09:43:38 PM »
For over 30 years I've been under the impression that I hate mayonnaise. Why? Because all my life, my family has referred to Miracle Whip as mayonnaise and I thought they were the same thing. Recently, though, someone bought a jar of actual Hellman's Mayonnaise and I've had it on subs two evenings this week. I love it. I always wondered what it was about mayonnaise on a fast food burger that tasted good when 'mayonnaise on a sandwich' always tasted wrong, and now I know... My family normally uses Miracle Whip, and I don't like it.

With this in mind, I thought I'd ask everyone here a couple questions:

1. Which do you prefer: mayonnaise or Miracle Whip? (Or do you like both, hate both, or happen to be one of those who swears there is no difference?)

2. Have you ever had a situation where something changed your mind about a food you previously thought you hated (or loved)?

I'm curious if something like this has happened to anyone else.

I don't know what Miracle Whip is but I sure love Mayo, not just Hellman's (albeit its the best but boy is it expensive).

I don't like both of them. I am not fond of any food that is white/ yellow and 'slimey'.

I used to hate cheese, I couldn't eat it at all when I was little. The taste and smell of anything milk-related made me want to ... well, you know.
However, when I stopped eating meat 16 years ago, I developed a love for goat and sheep cheese. A wedge of cheese, some fresh cherry tomatoes and a glass of wine, what more does a person need.

1. Both. It was only miracle whip as a kid and I thought it was nasty. Now I find I like both, but only certain brands of mayo and I like the olive oil base. (Once my mom told me all about regular mayo. Don't do that to a kid)

2. See above. Plus many other instances. I hated my lima beans and brussel sprouts. Then when I was pregnant I couldn't get enough.

I make my own mayonnaise. Not *that* difficult to make.
And nothing beats homemade mayonnaise!

And yes, chemo changed my mind about Coke.
I cannot really drink it anymore, it has now a strong aftertaste of turpentine... Go figure!

And i used to despise spinach with cream as a kid.. now i could eat kilos of it!

I prefer Miracle Whip and rather dislike mayonnaise in most cases, but truly I really don't like either much but on very certain occasions.

As a child, I liked tunafish salad sandwiches.   Don't know if we used mayo or miracle whip, probably miracle whip, but I avoid both now.  The only exception that I allow mayo is on one of the chicken sandwiches from Arby's.  There is enough other items on the sandwich to almost mask the taste, and without it, the sandwich is too dry.

I used to really like caesar salads until I discovered the use of sardine paste in the dressing.  That's what I get for reading the label.  Several years went by before I could even eat another caesar salad

Mayo all the way.  I usually use the Helmann's with the olive oil base.

Miracle Whip is gross, haha.

Hmm foods I've changed my mind on - nothing really that I can think of.  I've always disliked eggs, which lots of people seem to find weird.  I *will* eat them, but I've never particularly cared for them.

I don't like either!  :X

When I was really young (about 2-3), I was convinced for some reason that I didn't like cheese - whenever we got pizza, I used to tell the servers that I didn't want cheese on mine, "just that stretchy white stuff," and my parents would communicate silently with them to just smile and nod it off lol. Now that I know better, I can't get enough cheese! Which is unfortunate, as I'm becoming less tolerant to lactose as I get older.

I can't really think of anything that I legitimately did not like before but have grown to like...when I was younger, I just tended to go through phases where I would eat mainly one thing and that's it. Like I went through one phase where when we went out, I only ever just wanted the free bread and water, and another phase where I only wanted cereal for every meal.

I recently tried brussels sprouts, since I always hated those, but I know sometimes tastes change as we get older; my dad had put some on the grill, and I'd only ever had them boiled or steamed before, so I thought maybe the different cooking method would change my mind about them. NOPE. Still gross.  :P

neither?  The ingredients wage death on the MA >>

When I was able to have it, I preferred the taste of miracle whip.  Hellmans tasted weird to me.
