This site is great for all things Pokemon: http://www.serebii.net/index2.shtml Except actual toys (stuffies, figures, etc). It doesn't do much with those, but games, shows, TCs, mangas, all that is there.

Another question: what's the difference between X and Y? I'm looking at 3DS game bundles and one comes with X and the other comes with Y.  (edited: I'm looking at getting her a 2DS)

X and Y are the same game.  The difference is that some pokemon can only be found in X and some can only be found in Y, encouraging the players to trade in order to complete the pokedex.  This has been standard practice for pokemon games since the first games were released.  Black and White (the generation just before X and Y) had more differences than that (one had a special city while the other had a forest at one point in the game) but as far as I could tell, that didn't make any difference in the grand scheme of the game.  I bought Y less than a month ago and it might end up being my favorite game so far.

The pokemon version of Wikipedia and was my first stop when getting into the pokemon business. It has everything you'll need.

There's Pokemon stuff all over the place. You can go to toy and gamestores to pick up plushies and figurines, there are books and dvds, cards and you can use a cheap folder and buy those special card sheets to hold cards for cheap and of coursevthe games. With the games you can start anywhere. Have fun.

Oh you have a GBA? Leaf Green/Fire Red would be perfect, as well as Sapphire and Pokemon Pinball. There's also the Mystery Dungeon games.

Yup, no difference between X and Y other than the version-exclusive Pokemon. If you think they'd matter to her, there's a list of the exclusives here. ^_^

Oooooh this is exciting!

As for gettim familiar with Pokémon, the show is a good place to start.

Also can your daughter read? The Pokémon games arent that complicated, pretty much go where it tells you and can keep going. I started playing when I was her age and the same with my brother and sister. They got it down pretty well.
But the difference between X and Y are Pokémon but similar story, just choose who your daughter finds her favorite.

Also as for console the 2ds would be a good start, but with the "New 3ds" I'm worried they are going to start making game exclusives to it that wouldn't work for the 2ds.

I'm a big Pokemon fan since childhood. The best sites to learn about Pokemon is Pokemon.com, Bulbapedia and Serebii.net.

That is an adorable picture :)

Similar to how I reacted when I got spunky(a beanie baby--this is in the mid 90s, when they were the hottest thing) as a kid :)
