How to straighten frizzy mane? UPDATE
« on: March 05, 2016, 03:22:14 AM »
I have some pony toys with bad mane. They manes aren't tangled  but the ends are very frizzy and looks like perm.
What is the best way to make mane straight again?  Don't want to damage them even more. :(

Update: two more questions.
1)Can I use flat iron metod on dolls?

2)Can I use shampoo with conditioner instead of conditioner?

I use flat iron on them, wet the hair, apply some conditioner on it but dont wash it out. Iron them and let it dry. Voila, rebonding. :)

Flat iron here as well. Use one with adjustable heat settings. I have gone up to 140 °C on regular pony hair, 120 with tinsel, but I recommend starting at the lowest temperature and test carefully. Never use the iron on dry hair, put conditioner in it or heat protection cream.

I'm currently preparing a video tutorial that shows how I handle frizz, I'll post the link once I am done. Hopefully some point next week!
Specifically looking for G1 with pen markings similar to this (my initials - W.S.):

To answer your questions

1) It will depend on the type of hair on the doll.

2) It is better to use conditioner only :)

By the way, there are some ponies that this will not work on!  Colour changing streaks and plastic tinsel will melt, so always test a tiny bit first =)

I've heard to never use an iron on Brazil ponies. Their hair is very fine and likes to melt.

Otherwise, start on a low heat setting and adjust higher if you need to. I do a small section of the hair at a time.   Also, as Buttercreamdream said, it doesn't work on all hair.   I have a hard time with the early pink hair (like Cotton Candy, Snuzzle, etc).

what about boil washing? (Dip the hair in boiling or hot water, rinse with colder water, then brush)

I tested that with a bait pony just to see. I wasn't enamored, at all. meh. (I boiled a kettle and dipped the hair in a pyrex bowl).

Do you have bait ponies? I practiced on a lot of cheap garbage horrible condition baits until I started getting a feel for how to use the flat iron on what type of hair, how frizzy how much I could improve it. If I mistakenly made the hair worse or crispy, it was no loss. there are a lot of variables so I recommended a big ol box of baits to practice on before trying to fix collection ponies. :) Some hair colours seem worse or better then others, and some textures of hair. hope this helps.

Be extra careful with color change hair, the plastic type tinsel and most non HK/China production ponies as they cannot take as much heat. I've noticed South American productions are especially sensitive.

EDIT: I see others already said the above, but you can iron all of these, just on low heat and with a lot of care, I absolutely recommend practicing on bait first!
