The "Main Characters" of the G1 MLP Cartoon?

So something that the G1 cartoon does quite well is lack any particular focus on certain ponies.  This has its good and its bad effects, of course.  Out of a "central" cast of 23 ponies, it's hard to narrow down which characters are the most prominent.

I wanted to know then - just off the top of your head - who comes to mind first when you think of the G1 characters?  I thought a random sampling from people's memory banks might be an interesting insight as to who had the most memorable personalities!

Since you asked for two of each breed, I chose:

Gusty and Ribbon (Unicorn), Paradise and Lofty (Pegasus), and Lickety-Split and Shady (Earth).

Fizzy and Gusty for Unicorns
Wind Whistler and Heart Throb for Pegasi
Shady and Magic Star for Earth Ponies

I chose Gusty and Fizzy, Wind Whistler and Surprise, and Lickety Split and Shady. I think they have the most memorable personalities, though there are many interesting characters in the series.

Until I started collecting as an adult I didn't even know that a pony called Sundance existed! I didn't see all the cartoons as a child, just some, she completely passed me by! I definitely remembered Shady, Wind Whistler and Fizzy. I nearly ticked Lickety Split, but I think who I actually remember is Baby Lickety Split! So I chose Posey instead. And Buttons and Whizzer to make up my six. But those last two could have easily been swapped with a few others! Surprise and Gusty probably.

I've only seen a few bits and pieces and wasn't paying close attention - I think the specials, Flutter Valley and maybe a few more of the first episodes, so I've just chosen the most memorable ponies from what I saw. I think it's more like a list of who had the most theatrical voice, a pony with an accent or inflection seems to stick in my head. Gingerbread and Sweet Stuff stuck out as talking a lot and being decision makers, Gusty trying to do magic whilst trapped in a net, Buttons probably because she's my favourite SS pony, Wind Whistler flying with Megan and guiding the group, and Heart Throb - she was one of the ponies with cut hair in The Glass Princess, and I believe I also saw her trying to cheer a friend up with some faaaabulous pony wear and my brain went *ding ding ding product placement*.

Hmm...I think because as you say the cartoon tries not to focus it really is all down to personal preference rather than guessing who was intended to be at the forefront. I think I ll go with the below.

 Buttons (Unicorn)

 Wind Whistler (Pegasus)
 North Star (Pegasus)
 Lickety-Split (Earth Pony)
 Sweet Stuff (Earth Pony)

Wind Whistler
Paradise
Gusty

Although I could probably swap Paradise for Heartthrob and Posey for Shady.  It doesn't help matters that even the movie focuses on like 12 ponies - some of whom aren't as focused on during the TV show.

TBH I don't think there really was a mane 6 in G1. In the past, it seems a lot more like they were trying to focus on many different characters- but we can sure dream!

Interesting to note that the majority leaders so far (Gusty, Fizzy, Wind Whistler, Lickety-Split and Shady) pretty much coincide with the characters that have the most speaking roles through the series.  I guess dialogue is important for character development! 

Seems like that second pegasus isn't such a clear choice - Paradise, Surprise and North Star have fairly equal votes at present.

I only voted for three, because honestly none of the other characters really stuck out above each other. I did find it a bit odd that Firefly wasn't one of the pegasus options, though, especially considering 'Rescue at Midnight Castle' was renamed to 'Firefly's Adventure'!

I'm really glad the G1 cartoons didn't have a rigid 'core group' of characters (even though I'm always happy to see my favourites show up, of course).

I feel like ribbon and buttons get the most screen time as the unicorns followed by fizzy and Galaxy.

Windwhistler and paradise seem to be it for the Pegasus, although North Star and heart throb are really prominent.

Earth ponies I'd say gingerbread,abd lickity split!

Gusty, Fizzy, and Wind Whistler are certainly running away with it.  Not surprised.  They really stood out in the stories involving them.  Lickety-Split and Shady are the clear leaders for earth ponies, but not dominating like the three above.  And it looks like Surprise is starting to emerge as the second pegasus.

EDIT:  Random thought, but these frontrunners remind me of the Winnie the Pooh characters.

What  to me is interesting is how many votes Shady has gotten. I can't really remember her from the show at all!

Ha ha Wind Whistler was totally Owl! She was so wise. She's the character I remember most.
