I tend to keep my duplicates... though strangely, in 24 years of collecting and 500+ ponies in the collection, somehow I have very, very few duplicates. :/ But I just can't let any of them go. I feel like they are worth much more to me than their supposed monetary value. I might still intentionally purchase a better quality duplicate if I can get one, though. I'll just keep the old one.

Guilty.  Very, very guilty.  I restore absolutely everything.  If I find an upgrade I'll keep it and sell the other one, but I don't seek out upgrades.

Self confessed fuss pot and blatant upgrader here!

Nowadays I am usually a bit picky when buying in the first place. There are lots of ponies in my collection which are less than perfect, and they sit happily on the shelves.  HOWEVER.... if a duplicate inadvertently makes its way over in a lot or something then a bit of decision making goes on and I usually keep the better pony  :lookround:

I don't upgrade, I just buy the "nicer" one and display them together! ...then also buy that other one in less-than-stellar condition and they can be triplets!

And that's the story of how Chi ends up with 4746283846 Tulip butts.

I will upgrade, but what happens to the replaced differs depending on what is being upgraded.

Childhood ponies, ponies that were gifts, and ponies that have some sentimental value to me - I keep both the original and the upgrade.

Ponies that I bought as collection pieces that I didn't form any particular attachment to - those will be bumped into the trade bin.

Ponies that arrive in unexpectedly bad condition - those go straight into the trade bin.

Happy endings are always the best! Most of my ponies have had restoration done or I at least tried and failed (helloooo big sharpie marks on the feet!). I just can't bring myself to let go of the imperfect ones and just decided its army time. They all have differences as no two ponies are made the same, so technically it's not the exact same...  :lookround:
I'm not going to become a hoarder or anything .... It's definitely not my plaaaan....

I have no issues restoring ponies. But I have a few that suffer from things with no easy fixes - chipped Twinkle Eyes in particular and a few have imperfect eyes which I can probably touch up but I'm not sure. Once you start, it's hard to stop.

I follow goddessofpeep's system. If the pony itself has sentimental value, I don't really see that it can be 'upgraded', but buying a duplicate to fill my collection works fine. With my G3s (which I'm generally less sentimental about as none of them are childhood ponies), I could see replacing any that aren't mint.

Do you have this playset, with these accessories? Are you interested in selling them?

I upgraded more in the past, and there are still some ponies I want to upgrade. There have even been some Argies that I've upgraded...though most nirvanas I don't worry with condition as much. Others I want to upgrade, but I can't bring myself to sell the worse one so I end up with duplicates, and I keep childhood ponies even if I also upgrade them

Now that I've been collecting so long and I have so many ponies, I'm less concerned with upgrading and more concerned with deciding which ponies I truly want to have and which I can let go of. I used to be a set completer (still am for some sets), but I also realized that I really didn't like certain sets enough to complete them
