How to save up for BJD?
« on: October 10, 2014, 03:55:42 PM »
I fell in love with the Resinsoul Mei doll recently (It happens to all of us  :P), and money is a little tight. How did you save up for your doll(s)?

Hahaha you're doomed. :silly:

I save up a little at a time.  When I do a side job (I am the world's most overqualified babysitter and have 3-4 families who call me frequently), that money goes straight into an envelope labeled "Dollies."  And once or twice a month, I toss $5-10 into the envelope.  The babysitting does it for me mostly.  One family in particular often calls me over from 5-midnight and I make around $100 in that night.  In the last 3 years, I've bought 13 dolls (if you include the 3 who are either not home or waiting on a body) and they represent around a $4k investment.  About 80% of that is babysitting.

Not exactly what you are looking for but in case you didn't know this already Denverdoll offers up to a four part layaway on Bobobie bjds. It always seems easier for me to stomach the high cost of bjds if I can break the cost up over time rather than paying all at once.

I am a big fan of layaway too.  Most of my dolls have been purchased with some sort of layaway.  Even most of the dolls I've bought second-hand were paid for over a period of a few months.  And I have bought all of my new dolls (with one exception) from DDE on layaway.  I usually pay a deposit and then just pay the rest when my order is in.  But it also helps that I only live about 15-20 minutes from the place, lol.

I third the layaways!  Majority of my BJD's were purchased that way.  I also have a 'FUN' bank account that I put money in every paycheck and use towards a new doll or entertainment fund.

I take the spare change that has been in my purse/wallet bouncing around for a month and put it in a special "piggy bank".  I figure if I haven't spent it yet, I can save it.

I mostly do layaways. I have also saved money from my art sales and commissions to buy dolls, that money is often how I pay my layaways every month. I have a very supportive husband who often gets me a new doll for big holidays like Christmas and Birthday.

i find the best way is to limit the other things i buy.
or i know i've also been selling some of my less needed or wanted items to save money for one.
i have a doll i'm craving that is 260$ so i'm setting the limit that i need to sell over 300$ of my stuff to get him.
(mostly cuz i know i'll make other purchase on the way.)

Thanks so much! I never thought of layaway :)

My other problem is that my family isn't very supportive of buying dolls that are over fifty dollars. I mean, they understand that it's my money and I can do whatever I want with it, but I think that they may give me a hard time over it.

I use the picture of the doll as my wallpaper, so everytime I unlock my phone she's there with the caption 'Shouldn't you be saving?' I have to cut down a lot on what other non-essentials that I want to buy, but I know she's worth it! :D

My mom is the only one who knows how much my dolls cost. We saw my Pipos Dorothy on a shelf at DDE one weekend and both loved her and Mom's reaction to the $280 price tag was "Oh! That's not bad at all!" I thought about her all week and when we went back the next weekend to buy her with my doll money envelope, Mom helped me cover the last $40 I didn't have saved up yet. And she's excited to see the $400 doll I have on layaway with a seller here. Nobody else will ever understand or know the prices lol.

I don't have any BJD's, but the dolls I do collect are in the same sort of price range as BJD's.  ( $250 - $1250 ), and I definitely employ the envelope method.  When one pops up, I have to check my envelope to make sure I know what I can bid on her. . .  Mine are all antique and vintage.  I don't have a doll that isn't 30 years old or older.  Most of mine are pre-1950, so there is a certain surprise element to it. . .

I actually won a very cheap doll this morning, not on ebay, but another auction website, and all told, she will probably be just a bit over $70!  All original with her clothes, shoes, wig in perfect original set!  Omg!  I can't wait!  Just waiting for the auction house to invoice me so I can pay for her!
