Scottish Independence Referendum
« on: September 18, 2014, 09:37:33 AM »
I voted this morning. Eek! I'm so nervous waiting for the result.  :yikes:

Whichever way it goes, it's been amazing how many people have been engaged and active in the debate. And the voter turn out is expected to be a record high!  :)

I've been reading about this too- I don't even live in the UK and I am so nervous about the result!

But the stories speculating about whether the royal baby announcement was a carfully timed coup... that was kind of funny...

This is my thought too. Even as a British (English) citizen I'm not really sure what to think of it, or what to think about what things could be like whatever the result... I just hope whatever happens turns out to be the best for the people of Scotland and the United Kingdom.

Prayers and warm thoughts toward everyone over in the UK. Either way the vote goes I feel amazed that I'm alive during this historic event.

I am so weirdly nervous! Only a few hours before we know. No matter what, the involvement in this process has been jaw dropping - they are talking about 90% of the population turning up to vote!!!!

Either way this changes everything and half the population are going to be sooooo grumpy tomorrow...but at least the other half will be elated :P

Ok, now if this is going to cause an argument, please just ignore me completely. I have no idea if there is controversy and arguments going on over this or not. I've been intentionally avoiding the news lately, so while I know it's happening, I don't know much. Anyway (also forgive me if this is completely inappropriate to ask because I am a clueless idiot sometimes), I'm curious. Scottish Arenaens, who wants to be independent? As I said, if it will start an argument or is just rude to ask, just ignore me. :silly:

I am going to hope it doesn't cause an argument but its a political thing after all so its a bit of a dangerous conversation - if you are passionate about it...you are very passionate and that leads to a lot of intense discussion.

It is massively controversial - we are part of the UK right now so it would be ripping up the concept of the UK as it stands. Its massive for Scotland, for the UK and potentially for the rest of the world - it sets an interesting president for other regions which want to separate from the country which currently governs them.

Its not really the same thing but I guess the closest US example would be like Florida deciding to secede from the union. Voting to become the "country" of Florida and the US converting to just 49 states.

I voted yes - took 2 years to make that decision and the only reason I did it was by ignoring both sides (because both have good arguments and both have been telling fibs) and just going with my heart. No one knows the future and I think as a country change is good for our country. Its a gamble...a massive gamble and I ll probably have a panic attack in the morning if Yes does win :P (although I think its going to be No - its going to be insanely close).

Yeah.... California keeps trying to leave. At least certain loud Californians keep trying to have California leave, I'm not sure the whole state feels that way. Apparently that isn't allowed.....

That does sound kinda scary though! I wouldn't know how to vote, I don't think. The different bits of the UK seem very different from each other so it seems maybe being able to govern themselves completely might be good, but at the same time it seems it would sorta be like suddenly they'd be all on their own without the support they were used to. *shakes head to clear scariness* Yeah, I'm glad I don't have to vote. I do hope it works out though and everyone is safe and nothing crazy happens afterwards because one side isn't happy.

It's mostly the wealthy elite who want California to secede. There's going to be a referendum on whether or not we become six states or stay one and it's backed by one of the darlings of Silicon Valley. There is a lot of animosity towards Silicon Valley in the Bay Area so I think that alone will shoot down any hopes for secession.

Meh. Anyway! I am really fascinated by the events in Scotland. I agree it is going to be very close at the final tally and I suspect if the majority vote "no" it will sadly take a very long time for it to be on the ballot again. I did read that Wales is worried about how this could effect them and Northern Ireland and I think those are very valid concerns if the secession happens.

Edit: Actually the six state initiative for California didn't even make it onto the ballot and I am incredibly relieved by that! It was very clearly biased in favor of the wealthy and people loyal to one party over another.
