Lyra and Lyrica I think are real names too. So is Pinkie for that matter.  Although it's an odd one in these days and times.

Bonnie and Blossom.
Clover
Lavender
Merriweather
Misty
Angel
Fifi
Coco
Dahlia
Honey
Is Pristina a name?
Serena
Cha cha maybe?
Daisy
Stella
Ruby
Dawn
Belle
Primrose
Rosy
Tabby
Candy
Taffy
Truly

Those are all the G1 names that are real names that I saw.

Cherry is a real name. Lulu. Sunny.  Star. Trixie.

Me and my girlfriend are having a baby due in July, and we're currently having a heated discussion about names. I actually like the name Rarity, not to be used as a first name, but as a middle name if it's a girl, however my girlfriend hates it! What do you think?

PS. I didn't know where my thread should go, so I've put it in Pony Corral just because iit's kind of got something to do with MLP!

If your girlfriend hates it and you are willing to have a heated discussion with a pregnant woman, you might want to rethink your baby naming priorities. It sounds like you might be putting your wants above making a reasonable choice that both of you can agree on.

I used to work with a girl who was called Princess. She was not named after a pony (as far as I know), but she did come to work in a G1 Cupcake sweater once! She had such problems with people not taking her seriously, even customers. Once, a lady on the phone told her, "If my parents had called me Princess, I'd have killed them". So rude!

I could imagine that with the right combination of first and last name, Rarity could make a sweet middle name. However, if your partner doesn't like it, better find something else that you both agree on. It's not worth fighting over.

Some of those names don't sound like good people names. Truly? Primrose? Cha Cha? Merriweather? *Shudders* Fifi sounds like a dog or cat.

You forgot Tiffany, which is actually a normal name. I love the name Belle, though.

I did forget Tiffany. How could I!

Truly is usually a nick name but it's not that weird. ChaCha and Fifi are real human names but I think they are better on pets.  Primrose has been on the rise for a while and gained more popularity with The Hunger Games. However it is a name used for girls that existed before that book.

Merriweather is actually a boys name. There was the famous Meriweather Lewis from the famous Lewis and Clark expedition in early US history.  Wait, you're from Virginia, you should know that!  ;)

I would have to go with "no" and I'm going to come out and just say that when I first heard that one of the ponies was named "Rarity" I decided I hated FiM. I later actually saw the show, but I still can't stand her name!

I was never interested in history, so I didn't do well in the subject.

Lol, I lived in Virginia for a short amount of time as a kid and they had us all do book reports on them. It's possible my school was really VA history crazy.  It's the single most thing I remember from them.

I would, if I had any interest in having children.  I think it would be cool to name a boy Ace and a girl Clover.

Ashley is also a historically Male name and growing up (and many days as an adult) I have not been fond of my name. It wasn't until last Aug when I bought my first house and the yard had many, many Ash trees that I was proud and happy to have my name.
I imagine a kid named after an MLP (like, say, Scootaloo) would feel similar. "what did I ever do to deserve such a name?!"

I don't think I could bear to put a pony name on a birth certificate, but I might use some neutral sounding ones as nicknames. Like 'Chief' or 'Sweetie'. Personally I hated my birth name from a very young age just because it has 7 letters/3 syllables and that made it too difficult for my friends to get right. When I found out my mum got it off a character from a TV show I hated, I was simply livid! I go by my own chosen nickname permanently now and will probably have it legally changed in the future.

It's a nice thought to name a child after your favourite media and I've thought about it a few times over the years, most recently with Watership Down (Hazel, Blackberry, Strawberry, Dandelion) but in the end I think its best to go with something normal, possibly from your own family tree. As others have said, there are pony names that double as normal names, and some of them you could even pass off as having other inspirations (Princess Serena - Serena Williams the tennis player). But for something like Rarity, its very obviously tied in to FiM, and all it would take is one classmate thinking its funny to address your daughter with a diva voice (oooh, darling, you simply MUST let me borrow a pencil) for them to become resentful of your choice.

I'm gonna say it- I'm not crazy about Rarity as a pony name.

I thought I was the only one!

I agree that Rarity sounds like a pretty name for a girl, but once people find out you're an MLP fan it will become very obvious where the inspiration came from. :P Your child may have mixed feelings about being named after a cartoon pony later in life. And of course, if your girlfriend doesn't like it, I wouldn't push her on it. Congrats to you both btw!

My mother chose my birth name from a character on a TV show she liked. Granted, it's a common name and was especially popular the year I was born. I'm not sure how I would feel if she had named me after a cartoon character, particularly one with an unusual name.

I don't mind naming pets after TV show characters though, but that may be because I named both of my childhood cats after famous TV cats -- Tom and Salem. I was a little kid when I named them but I'd probably still name a pet after a character I like if I thought it suited them.
