It's expensive and overrated, as are most "important" high school functions really.
Agreed :/ even though I'm a senior, I will NOT be attending my prom...what's the point of buying a dress you're going to fit into ONCE in your entire lifetime?
Not to mention, in my area the kids like that obnoxious rap music and I bet that's all they even play at proms :/ plus I don't wanna see kids twerking and making out everywhere  :X :yucky: ...and I'm a loner too, so a prom is a no go for me!  :(

P.S. Its a waste of pony money...imagine how many ponies (depending on who) You can get with $200-$500!!! D8

But hey, if you're a social butterfly, great at dancing and whatnot then go ahead and go...probably a million times better than mine :P
Oh no!

Haha yep. xD Still haven't decided though… at least from what I've heard at my prom they do a lot of classy dancing liking swing dancing which is WAYY better than people rubbing up against each other like monkeys xD

I hear our proms have great food...Mmmmm...food, that's probably the only reason i'll go to a prom

But then again, it might turn into a horror movie at any moment  :ninja: another reason i'm not fond of proms  :lookround:

I didn't go to mine. I don't regret it either. I didn't really have many friends in high school though and I didn't know anyone else who was going.

I never was into the dressing up thing anyway. I also thought it was too expensive.

Memories are far more valuable than objects and can give you more happiness when you remember them.  A bunch of photos of you in that dress you wear once will last your lifetime and remind you of that night.

Everyone is obviously different, but I have never regretted going to my prom or wearing a pretty "one event only" dress. Then again, I am a total girly girl when it comes to getting dressed up. :)

And you don't have to spend a lot on the dress if you know how to hunt for bargains.

Lol!  If you and you're friends are lucky enough to be in any of the yearbook photos besides the headshot that is. I think in my school the yearbook staff only put their friends in it.

Note to all high schoolers: make friends with the yearbook staff. ;)

I couldn't go to my prom because of some stupid policies.  If you wanted to attend prom, you had to have a real opposite sex date(I went to an all girl Catholic school, so my options were basically limited to extended family).  You couldn't go alone, and you couldn't go with a same sex friend.  I didn't have anyone I could go with, so I stayed home.

I've never felt bad about it.  I had enough problems finding a dress to graduate in(it had to be modest, all white, and floor length - think wedding dress without the fun).  I didn't date in high school and was terribly shy, so I would've spent most of my time being a wall flower.  I switched schools my second year of high school, so a lot of my friends were a year below me and not allowed to go to prom anyway.  I don't dance.  I don't like it, and I'm really not good at it.

All in all, I have no regrets about missing out on prom.  Maybe a slight bit of lingering curiosity, but I've never felt like I missed out on some big event.

I'd say that if you've never been into the whole dancing thing in high school, you probably won't be missing *that* much with prom.  If you are into that thing, it'll probably be a fun night for you.  I'm not into that kind of thing, so I'm perfectly fine with how things turned out for me.  I don't particularly like the reason I couldn't go, but I'm not sad about not going.   Also, this isn't your last chance at this anyway.  You've still got senior prom if you really want to go.

My class was real small though - about 60 people. Every body knew everybody. Weather you liked them or not was a different story.

Our theme was Stairway to Heaven and we were given Beer steins as a momento with the date and them on them.
They didnt rent anyplace special due to some odd reason. So it was held in the Caffeteria. It was so long ago, I dont remember much about it but I dont think I hated it. And the whole prom king/queen/court thing was rigged.

The after prom party - now that was a different story. Lets just ay we made good use of our beer steins partaking in underage drinking out in the woods.

Here is me in that hideously pink dress I borrowed

I enjoyed both of my proms, so I'd recommend you go.  If you feel self conscious just dance with a circle of girl friends.  You only get one chance a year to do this so go for it :)

Exactly! My stepmom made a dress for my senior prom that I had designed, which I still have and love (we used the same system for my wedding dress and I re-wore the crinoline for my wedding as well).  We didn't spend nearly as much that way, plus I had the perfect dress of my dreams!  For my junior prom, I bought an off-the-rack dress from a previous season for something like $50.

I never understood why it was a thing to give engraved alcohol glasses to underage kids as a favor for prom?  I mean what's up with with that?   They're kind of tacky later on down the line.

OP if you still think you might miss out on memories save your money this year and go to the senior prom next year, because then you can say you did it.  I advise taking a group of friends as opposed to dates.  Then go bowling in your sweet fancy digs :3 or mini golf.  Also don't pay beaucoup bucks for the dress there's plenty of cute stuff out there for under $50 that's way more comfy than the $300 insanely priced stuff they advertise in 17.

Yeah, like some others have said, if you like being with people and dressing up, you probably should go and make memories. :) And on the flip side, if you hate crowds and wearing makeup and dresses/formal clothes, you probably shouldn't go. The money is better used on ponies!

I think prom can turn out very differently for everyone, and of course even from year to year it can turn out differently for the same person. My junior prom was lots of fun even though I didn't have a date. I went with a group of friends in a dress I loved and it was a super-fun night. My senior prom was a disaster, since I had to watch the guy I liked dancing with his girlfriend. (I became his girlfriend later on, but still.  >_<) Hope you make a decision you can be happy with.  ^.^

In my opinion, it depends on what you like to do (if you like dressing up like that), the venue (if its going to be somewhere lame, I say don't bother), the music (do you think they'll play stuff you like, or mostly things you hate), what you value more (having the money or memories - which could be good or bad).

I went to most school dances in middle school and never had a good time. I'm a loner, I can't dance, didn't like the music, etc. In high school my boyfriend and I never went to any dances, but we considered his senior (my junior) prom. We made some vague plans of what we wanted to do, but neither of us or our families could afford even just a ticket so we didn't go. We stayed home and hung out together instead, which was very nice.

We ended up being VERY happy we didn't go, and wouldn't been pissed if so much money had been wasted (even on just the tickets - $75 each!). It was held in the black box and stage of the city's theatre (which I've been to many times as I was in band) and was incredibly trashy. Nothing but music both of us absolutely hated, very inappropriate dancing, way too short dresses, terrible food, etc. We wouldn't have had a second of fun and probably left within a few minutes, so neither of us has ever regretted it. My senior prom was similar, but we never considered going and didn't want to.
