Sunspot: Am I missing somenthing?
« on: January 31, 2014, 02:55:21 AM »
Hi all!

I have a question about Sunspot. Lately I'm seeing her on sale all the time, but what caught my attention is that all of the ponies I've seen have pink tail and white mane.

In ponylandpress it says that the hair is light pink.... Does this pony tend to fade the mane but not the tail? Is that even in the photo of the pony MOC, her hair is way lighter than the mane... Any ideas why this is?

And.. if you have one... show her!!

Thanks!!

Here is my sunspot that is on my TeaJay shop on Etsy

She has the Pink tail & white hair I thought it was odd too all I thought is that her hair faded & tail didn't. Unless she just had white hair for some reason. Her sun's face is off centre too

My theory has been because the tail is thicker it doesn't fade as quickly as the mane, which is thinner, and often on display, the tail faces back, and the face and hair face the light. It makes the mane more likely to fade than tail. Just a theory

Mine has a white mane and pink tail too, I've often wondered about it.

I wonder if they used the more "fade proof" shade for the tails.  As a test or something.

I've had several Sunspots over the years and all of them have had white manes and pink tails. Maybe they used a slightly different shade for the tails that doesn't fade as much as the manes?? I have no clue, but have always found it odd.

I've also seen this with one of the Sweetheart Sister ponies.  Can't remember her name.  Light blue body, pink hair.

Its not just Sunspot. I think they just used different hair for the tail. I had a Steamer like this before, I sold him last month though:

Oh, and I've seen a few Sunspots with bright pink mane but faded tail. :)

I thought I've read that there was in fact a hair color almost identical to fading pink, but that doesn't fade as easily?

Every single Sunspot I've ever seen has had a white mane and pink tail. My childhood one (long since vanished) was the same.

I'm leaning towards different types of pink hair being used for the mane and tail. It doesn't make a ton of sense from a manufacturing point - would make the process more complicated for a start - but that's all I can think of.

Yes, there were apparently a few different pinks that they used. I'd guess the same, that they put a very similar but ultimately different pink into the tail supply.

I agree with this.  There's a brighter, more intense pink that doesn't fade as easily.   I've seen some ponies released with hair and mane colors that both fade, some with this brighter pink, and some (like posted here) with a mix of both.

The US Princess Serena seems to be primarily released with the fadeable hair here in the USA, but European versions of her seem have more of the bright unfadeable pink hair.

Sunblossom is another I've seen with both.  She's shown in the bottom row here:

I've also seen this with one of the Sweetheart Sister ponies.  Can't remember her name.  Light blue body, pink hair.

Her name is Fancy Flower. I have one with all bright/nonfadeable pink hair:

How very strange! I haven't had a pony like this pass through my collection yet, but it seems that the manufacturing process at Hasbro certainly did create some oddities.

Very enlightening!  I had a Sunspot come through who had the same issue.  I just thought that she was a lone sufferer!
Looking for CF Minty, excellent condition! (and maybe Snuzzle and Blue Belle)
