Blind Bag pony shelves, what would you pay for them?
« on: December 30, 2013, 05:08:08 AM »
I made a couple shelves for my BB ponies and I was considering making some to sell. I just bought a miter saw and it needs to earn its keep lol. I thought I'd see what people would expect to pay for something like this then decide if it would be feasible to knock out a few to sell. I made the shelf spacing to accommodate standard BB ponies so princesses and other large-scale figures would have to sit on the top if you wanted them on the shelf. I decided to do a whitewash/shabby finish on mine but other paint colors are doable.

TL;DR What would you be willing to pay for a shelf custom-made for BB ponies?

EDIT: I've decided to sell these at $30 :) I'll be bringing a few with me to the fair in Nashville on Saturday so if you'd like a set just look for the husband carrying around pony shelves lol. I'm happy to reserve shelves, just let me know and I'll put your username on the list.

Dimensions are 23 3/4" wide by 14" tall. They'll be painted white with a flat finish. Just let me know if you have any questions  ^.^

Thanks, Diamond! I don't think shipping would be terribly high, they're fairly light weight. Finding boxes might be an issue though lol. In any case it doesn't look like there'd be much of a demand for them. Glad I asked before I made a couple :)

I'd be interested if I wasn't on the other side of the world, lol. Just the size alone would cost me a mint. It's something I'd definitely buy from a meet or the fair or something though, maybe that's something to consider?

Just a thought, but have you considered selling them broken down? So everything is all there, ready to be put together with simply using some screws/nails and a hammer/screwdriver. There was/is a seller on ebay that my hubby and I had purchased shelves from last year and they sold them that way, you could see how they went together easily but because it was broken down/in need of assembly the shipping was dirt cheap, plus it was less likely to be damaged in transit.

Selling them at a pony meet is another great idea :)

I think you've come up with a cute way to show them off.

They look very nice, but I agree that shipping and handling might be a big kicker for most people. Selling them flat packed and having the buyer assemble the unit might be an option, but I think some people would expect to buy it for a lower price if they have to make it themselves. Also Zecora, the princess mold and other large figures are some of the more unique and sought after BBs so any collector would probably have a few of them, not being able to line them up with the regular sizes might be another strike against these shelves.

Thanks for the kinds words, everyone :)

I never considered leaving them unfinished to sell. It'd certainly make shipping cheaper and it'd be easier finding boxes to ship in. I'll have to give that some thought, thanks for the idea!

I'm actually going to my first pony fair in Nashville next year, I might bring one or two along :)

I don't really see the shelf spacing as a strike against them. I made them this way because 99% of the BB ponies are a similar height and if I spaced them to be able to accommodate the relatively few larger sized figures that'd equal a lot of wasted space that could otherwise be filled with pony goodness. If mine weren't hung so close to the ceiling I'd have my princesses on the top of the shelves. That's where they belong anyhow, watching over their loyal subjects  :P

I agree that since there are so few taller BB like the princess', they could just line the top of the shelf :)

I would say there's a lack of interest yet. With New Years Eve upon us, some people may not be checking the pony forum as often as they normally do. Give it a few days after the holiday passes. ;)

I think making a few to sell at the Fair is an excellent idea. It would be a good way to feel out interest/demand/pricing, and you could always take commission orders at the Fair if buyers are willing to pay shipping later on.

Your shelves look fantastic! If I had any wall space left in my pony room, I'd be interested. Best of luck to you if you decide to sell them. :)

*waves*  Hi there!  I'm in TN as well.  I'd be interested in one of these depending on how much you would want for it, maybe even two.  I'm thinking about $20 or $25?  I don't know how much your materials run, so that may be too low.  And I'd probably want to pick it up from you at the fair whether or not you  get a booth.

I think they look fantastic! I will admit I would love some smaller spaced shelf units for smaller ponies :)

I think however as others have mentioned shipping alone may put people off. However, if you were able to come up with a reasonably priced shipping method, then I am sure you will get some interest. And MikeysGrrrl's idea of taking them to a pony meet is fantastic!

$20 - $25 seems like a good price to me.

I think bringing some to the fair is going to be a perfect idea. That will give people an opportunity to buy them and not have to worry about shipping costs, and you don't have to worry about shipping them. I'm sure you'd sell a few :)

Hi, tiggerkitn! I won't have a booth but I can certainly bring some shelves along. I'm sure I'll be easy to spot XD

I'll try to get to Lowe's sometime this week to price the materials, I bought mine so long ago I can't recall what I paid. I should be able to come up with a price once I have a few numbers to work with and I'll post back here :)

Thanks for the input and encouragement, everyone!
