I don't know of any background story, but I know MsGatamon has a tradition of creating her own animal companions for her ponies.  I bet we could find more if we look for her posts.  :)

LOL There is really no story behind the shark.  Its just something I do.  It started as a way to practice miniature detailed painting.  Now its a habit of mine to include matching animal companions with my customs. 

Also there is a matching cat, but I kept it.
