It's some kind of large moth. Probably a Luna Moth. If not a Luna, then most likely something else in that family.

Elisto is correct, that is indeed a Luna Moth. Guessing he's a pretty low instar since they get darker as they age and get ready to turn into a cocoon.

What an amazing glowing caterpillar! Certainly got a luminous 80s thing going on there!

I do hope it makes it to the moth stage, the only giant silkworm moth caterpillar I ever raised was a Polyphemus  moth.

Wow- I've never seen a Luna caterpillar before- or even a moth (wrong coast I guess).

As kids- we kept/fed caterpillars (from our yard) until they turned into butterflies or moths- I think it is a really fun thing for kids to do :D

I learned something interesting about Lunar Moths when I was researching this guy... Do you know why we don't see many of these guys as moths? They only live for about 7 days after emerging form their cacoons. They don't even have mouths! They don't eat. They change into moths simply to mate and then die.... I thought that was an interesting fact.

Then you should let it go so it can find it's mate. Luna moths are becoming increasingly rare. I live in the middle of the woods and I'm lucky if I see one a year. Please put that caterpillar back so it can possibly make more Luna's.
