So I love horror movies, but they rarely scare me. They may be cool and moody and I enjoy them  for that, otherwise I enjoy them because they're just cheesy and make me laugh.  But the one movie that scared the absolute poo out of me, was called 'Wolf Creek'.  It's Australian, so you may have trouble finding it, but holy crud, it was terrifying.  It was gory and stuff, but not the way Saw is, mostly it was just done in a way that it felt really real.

The accents/dialog have the potential to make non-Australians find it funny, but if you can get past that.

wolf creek disturbed me terribly. good film. but then the disturbing nature had more to do with one of the actors looking and sounding identical to the love of my life than the violence. i don't scare easy.

and oh, are we talking about old movies and more importantly Vincent Price? sigh. i love him so much i have a large portrait tattoo. if no one has mentioned masque of the red death yet. add that!

Great topic!  Lot's of good movies in here.  I don't think I can add too much to the thread, other than saying that Poltergeist and the Exorcist are must watches for me during Halloween.

I loved Absentia.. the effect the monster had on the victims was more scary than the monster, to me

Is that the one where the monster lived in the walls of the tunnel?

Yes! :--)
Edit: someone else mentioned the tunnel, for me it was another one of those ones that are good until the monster is seen.. another one I liked was Dark Water!

I will say I hate it when a horror movie is doing good, the suspense is great  and then the monster shows up and is really lame.

The Entity disturbs me but I've watched it many times. Its not so much horror as paranormal and lots of rape scenes. To this day I get creeped out if I hear the metallic noise.

There are many movies called House so you have to get the right one. I like the 1986 one, which I believe is the Fred Dekker one.

I also like The Gate (1987).

It seems a lot of current horror movies are remade from Japanese ones.

I keep forgetting about the rape scenes in entity, I know that's what it's based around, but because it's a paranormal thing as opposed to another person doing it, I forget

I loved 80's horror movies, mainly because I grew up in the 80's lol. House, Poltergeist, Children of the Corn (the original) and Friday the 13th. I also love Rob Zombie horror movies :) as well as Wrong Turn 4, Cabin Fever and Mirrors.

There are so many movies, but I just can't think of ones I really liked, or ones that were really scary.

I watched Human Centipede 2 yesterday, o man, that was really disgusting. Not as scary as the first one, but definitely gross and disturbing.

Yeah my husband and I watched it about 6 months ago and we couldn't understand why it was in B&W and then it got to a certain part of the film and we both start gagging, I got up and started walking around hoping to settle my stomach and then we just turned to each other and said "Oh that's why", omg that movie had scenes that absolutely churned my stomach and made me want to throw up. I have a strong stomach and I have seen a lot of things, but that movie is by far the most disgusting movie I have ever seen in my life.

The idea and concept behind the first one was great, scary and disturbing. The second one just made me think omg what in the world is wrong with the person that wrote this, I think second one was all about shock and disgust.

My favorite horror movies is Trick R' Treat. I watch at least once every October as part of celebrating Halloween. I'm planning on making a custom of one of the characters.

If you like comedy mixed with horror I'd recommend Dead Alive. It's got a great mix of funny and scary moments. It can get pretty gross at times though. If you have trouble finding it it's also called Brain Dead in other countries.  Slither and Shaun of the Dead are two other funny scary movies that are pretty good.

Oh I thought of one!  The Japanese movie from 1989 called "Sweet Home."  I was introduced to it through the NES game, and that game severely creeped me right the heck out.  The movie is quite good too, but I think the game will always be a bit better, since you are actively controlling the characters.  But I definitely recommend the movie.  The movie is in 5 parts on Youtube with English subtitles.
