Does anyone display in acrylic boxes?
« on: September 24, 2013, 07:03:23 PM »
Hi all.

So, I'm wondering if anyone displays their ponies in acrylic boxes. I know pony collections tend to be on the larger scale, so I don't think many of you would... since that would be a ton of boxes.

but I have a few special ponies, aka, my grails-- that I think I'd prefer in boxes.

I put them individually in some generic acrylic boxes, then I started to worry about them as if they weren't getting any airflow. So I drilled some holes into the boxes....

I'm on the hunt for something that can fit all 3 of them in one box now... and wondering if anyone had any sort of suggestions.

If I remember correctly, the display box from container store doesn't work for all 3... but I was looking for something like this: http://www.containerstore.com/shop/collections/display/cubesCases?productId=10022884

any thoughts?

XD Probably not.

I bought some football display cases from Kohls (then on sale with a 30% coupon) for my so-softs and scented ponies. I can squeeze 8 ponies in there, so 3 ponies would be easy.  There's a mirrored background, but the other 3 sides and top are glass, and it lifts off the base.  These are four separate cases, stacked.   I know Michaels has a variety of sports memorabilia display cases too and you can print off coupons online.

Back in the days of the Beanie Baby craze I bought some Beanie Baby specific cases. They are tall (vertical), but I bet if you got one of those and turned it on its side it would fit three ponies. They were kinda like the ones on this website. Or here on Amazon.

That's a good question about airflow. I have wondered/worried about that myself this last summer, but with my childhood Barbie dolls. I have never put them in acrylic display cases before and wondered what effects it could have (especially on my ones that have the plastic leg spots).

Anyone have any thoughts in regards to long term use on vintage ponies?

*raises hand* Yeah, thats what mine pretty much is, a long beanie baby display case thingy! Mine looks like this below, its actually displays horizontal and vertical. I might need to add holes to mine.

I was considering buying some basic ones for Punzie and my customs, but when we moved and I brought my china cabinet with us, they are all stored in there. :)

You could always throw silica bags in them to keep moisture down.
Dry Rice does the same thing too.
If you get your phone wet throw it in a bowl of dry rice

Recently I got a Rarity/Celestia prototype and she stays in her little beanie baby case (they fit the fashion styles perfectly but sideways they fit G1 babies and G4 adults and babies). They also fit a G1 adult standing up. I have a silica pack in there with her:

And I also keep my Brazilians in a big case for the beanie buddies:

Also in that pic I have a bunch of G1 babies in the smaller one on top.

If I could display them all in cases like this I honestly would. Its just cost prohibitive at the moment until I luck on to ex-display stock at some point hopefully.

I have a couple of the large Beanie Baby boxes as well - they are intended for some of the nirvanas but I have never got round to displaying them properly.

Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Thanks everyone for your responses /and/ pictures. It's nice to see another way to display ponies. :3

I think my case needs to be much bigger then a beanie baby case though. A football case is more like it. The glass one is rather nice though.............. <_<; !

And generally speaking, the container store has a bunch of acrylic boxes of all sorts of sizes, that tend to be reasonably priced. My girls are in the amac box now, but... as I said, I wanted them together.

I'd advise caution about keeping collectibles in airtight / plastic containers.  Unless you've got museum quality materials, most of the stuff sold to the public to house "collectibles" can be toxic to what you put inside to some degree or another, and even if it isn't, you're creating a microclimate that can accelerate deterioration.  Very few materials do not give off volatiles, and our precious ponies are among the majority that do.

Display methods for historical objects are designed to protect them from visitors, rather than just the environment.  (You really don't want to know how many pounds of water the average daily attendance at a national museum puts into the air, not to mention the shed skin and oil, it's scary.)  Behind the scenes, open air storage with minimal lighting and good circulation is the rule.
G1 Wishlist  It's the final countdown! Looking to purchase the last few G1's for my collection - Watercolor Baby Sea Ponies Foamy, Misty & Surfy - Red Roses - SHS Sweet Sundrop - Springy - Teeny Tiny Snookums (#2)
