Young Adult Book Recommendations
« on: September 21, 2013, 05:34:08 PM »
Hey all, I'm looking for some book recommendations. My stepson and I are still in the bonding stages of our relationship and we don't have a ton in common...but we both love fantasy, mythology and reading so I thought maybe we could try having our own two man book club.

I'm looking for a series (preferably finished...I can't stand waiting!) that is geared around the 12-13 year mark but won't be too boring for an adult.

Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated!

Redwall by Brian Jaques.
The Belgariad and Mallorean by David Eddings.  If you like those, there are also Belgarath The Sorcerer and Polgara The Sorceress in the same series.
Star Wars/Star Trek.

Seconding Redwall.  He might like the City of Ember series as well.

Rick Riordan writes a fair bit of fantasy as well, and his Percy Jackson series has a sizable amount of mythology in it. :)

Sorry, I don't have any suggestions, but just thought that your "two man book club" idea was incredibly sweet.  Good luck! :)

Although, not a series, I'd like to recommend ANYTHING by Roland Smith!!! His books have yet to disappoint me. Here's his website.

http://rolandsmith.com/index.php

I've read Elephant Run, Zach's Lie, Jack's Run, Cryptid Hunter, Sasquatch, Thunder Cave, Jaguar and The Last Lobo.

Cryptid Hunter is by far my favorite. There is a sequel, I just haven't read it yet.

Thanks! I try really hard to make both of my stepkids feel special and loved, I just feel like we still have a disconnect there. Sometimes its hard for us to find stuff to talk about when its just the two of us and reading is something I think that will help cure that. :)

You've all given me such good suggestions! And books I already know he likes - Percy Jackson and Eragon - so I'm hopeful we'll find something here!! I think I'll look up some of your suggestions and then let him pick.

Keep them coming, we'll need a lot!

Cinda Williams Chima's books. She wrote them for her teenage son and they're lengthy fantasy novels but for teens. The Heir Chronicles and Seven Realms series.

She originally wrote this long involved novel for adults, and then looked at it and made it into a teenage series, I believe.

I agree with the Percy Jackson suggestion (lots of greek mythology, super fun to read) and Underland Chronicles (one of my favorite series)

Warrior Cats, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Weenies series, Gaurdians of Ga'hoole, The Chronicles of Narnia, goosebumps, the Demonata series would also be some personal suggestions.

Death Gate Cycle by Margret Weiss and Tracy Hickman.  They also did some Dragonlance? (blanking!) collaborations but Death Gate is much better.  I read it about 14 or 15 so, depending on his level, might be good now or in another year or so!  Super fantasy with dragons, wizards, the whole shabang!

I read a lot of dystopian/post-apocalyptic stuff, so here's some of that:

Hunger Games trilogy
Divergent trilogy (3rd book comes out in October, but its an AMAZING series)
Partials series
Forest of Hands and Teeth series (I think there's 4 of them)
Unwind Dystology by Neal Shusterman
Pure (I think this is a trilogy...I know the first two books are out)

Almost all of those are also sci-fi.

Warrior cats series would be good (or survivors series by same author)
Hunger games
Divergent series is awesome!
Land of stories books (two of them)
Eragon

Good luck!
