How to get cat urine odor out of a couch?
« on: September 14, 2013, 02:52:09 PM »
So I was just given a couch from my family because it smells slightly of cat urine, but it's really bad when you sit on it. It gives me a headache and it's not like I have plenty of money otherwise I would have bought a new couch. I'm looking up how to remove the smell on google, but everything is for how to remove the smell when it's fresh, I think this couch has smelled like this for a while. Can anyone suggest a spray or powder or natural solution to this problem?

Nature's Miracle.  Lots of it.  Douse Mr Couch with it and let it air dry.  Outside is a good choice.  Alternatively, wash the cushion covers in the washing machine with some of that tossed in.

You could use a black light to see where the problem issue is. It's possible there could be many problem areas.

I would definitely wash the cushion covers, and apply the treatment to the cushions only. (if the cover is removable, that is).

I use this mainly on accidents on the floor. But I imagine it could possibly work for a couch? I think it works better then Nature's Miracle alone (but then again, I use it on more fresh spots). Use a vinegar/water mixture on the problem area. Put a towel, and something heavy on top. It will help bring the urine out. D: It's really gross.

You might need to do this a few times.

AFTER I get a majority out, I use the Natures Miracle to help neutralize the area.

It could be possible maybe it's only on a smaller area, and if that's the case maybe you could find a place that sells just the cushions. I know someone who did that, but for some reason it was really expensive. O_o

Good luck.

Do you know someone with a carpet shampooer that has an upholstery attachment?  I know Bissell makes a cleaner called Ewww that works pretty well, but you will need a carpet shampooer to get it to work the best.

Nature's Miracle. I made a paste of Baking soda on my couch when my cat bombed it and it worked too.

Ah, it's the cushion covers you wash. But yeah, I don't think that has a removable cover...

Heat will permanently set the urine. So it's best to try to get it out as much as you can first before carpet shampooer thingie-- if you go that route.

White vinegar + water solution might work. It'll also disinfect it. It shouldn't smell of vinegar much afterwards either (I soaked a scarf in a sinkfull of water with 1/4 cup white vinegar in and it didn't smell much afterwards). Test it on a small area where it can't be seen, though, just in case it doesn't react well. The strength of the solution is up to you (maybe try 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar to start?) and I'd personally use one of those squirt bottles for it.
Idly searching for: loose, good condition G4 Blossomforth, Starbeam Twinkle, Plumsweet. TTM Celestia doll's wings Within UK or EU only, please.
Will also take in Pretty Pony Club (UK magazine) fakies.

Duh moment on the black light!  Yep, that can help narrow it down.

I'm glad this topic came up as my cat who just had surgery decided the couch was a great place to pee.  :/

With our "problem chair" I did the Nature's Miracle thing and when that was towel dry I lightly dusted with baking soda and let that sit under dry towels with weights on it where I could. After about a week I cleaned it with more Miracle and after it was dry this time I bought some inexpensive upholstery fabric and tacked that on there to make sure the surface I touched was as clean as possible. :P

It was a recliner with no detachable anything so I feel your pain there. Maybe with a futon like that you may be able to take the whole cushion to a laundromat as long as they have big enough equipment and the tag doesn't say dryclean or spot clean only. >_<
Creatively cute and proud of it!  Have a very good day, [you]!  ^.^

Either Nature's Miracle or vinegar can work really well, too.  If you use vinegar, though, you'll probably want to use some sort of fabric cleaner afterward... usually the vinegar smell doesn't stick around but sometimes it does.

Putting it in direct sunlight also helps.
