Cleaning ponies: long-term effects of using...
« on: September 05, 2013, 07:35:21 AM »
...magic erasers?

I've used them for years to take off stubborn stray marks (avoiding eyes, blush and cutie/taf marks etc...), and have never noticed any damage to the plastic over time.

But i like to worry  Has anyone noticed any bad long-term effects of using magic erasers to clean ponies? Yellowed plastic? Uneven body color? Something random and nasty?

No long term effects that I know of. They are abrasive, so I imagine the only real effect you'd see would be texture changes.

I always rinse off the pony after using magic eraser.

You really shouldn't see any sort of chemical reaction (like yellowing or color change) over time with magic erasers because there are no chemicals in them!  It's actually just a very very very fine sandpaper, basically, which is why you should be careful with it around painted surfaces and skin (it always surprises me when someone uses one on their skin, please don't do that!)  I always like to rinse my ponies after using a magic eraser anyway, just because you can't be sure what sort of dirt/gunk was loosened and not picked up by the eraser.

Just don't use them on magic message ponies, and I think you're fine.

As Alipes says they are just sand paper in their own way - so they are not laying down anything on the pony just removing the surface.

I imagine the only thing which may happen after a very extended time is if a pony is fading the fade may be a bit patchy as the surface of the plastic is different. But as none of us are out there deliberately trying to fade the colour out of a pony I dont think it would ever be anything to worry about. And it would probably be so minimal, if at all, that you would not notice it.

I never knew that there were no chemicals!  Wow!

No wonder they're so good at getting all the grime off around my doorknobs...I'm sanding it off!

I've not had any long term effects from magic eraser... Been using them for the last few years... They work so well!
