A question I am "dyeing" to know the anwser too -
« on: September 02, 2013, 02:40:37 PM »
It seems most folks like to use rite and similar general fabric dyes, but has anyone ever tried the dyes by say Jacquard that is made for nylon?  Since ponies (and their hair) are not a cotton or cotton blend I was wondering if it might work better.

I have only used Rit. It does have specific instructions for dying nylon. (And it has worked quite well for hair, in my opinion.)

I am interested to see if others have tried nylon-specific dye though. :)

You talking about iDye? I've been curious about it myself. I'm mostly wondering if it will take on types of hair Rit won't take at all since it is actually made for synthetic materials.

That is good that they have that and it works, just got to wonder if something made only for that might work better.

Hoping someone might have tried it before I spend the money.

Me!! I have a small business dyeing yarn, I dye wool, silk and nylon and they all use acid dyes. I use 3 brands and one of them is Jacquard. I have dyed pony hair with it and of course it works perfectly since it's meant for nylon :) Acid dyes are colorfast whereas Rit dye won't be 100% colorfast. And don't be scared by the dyes being called acid dyes, the acid is vinegar :)

Now my question is, does it bleed through paint when you seal said paint?

If it's properly heat set it should not bleed at all :)
