To put pony heads back on I usually use like a popsicle stick or my needle nosed pliers to poke the bottom lip part of the plug back into the pony and work my way around. But getting the plug heated helps a ton as well!

Try putting her head back on like this:  Aim the head/neck plug at a diagonal angle into the body.  Squeeze together if you need to.  Once you have one little bit under the "lip", start rotating the head onto the body.  Sometimes you have to turn the body back and forth too, but it WILL go on!

It worked! SHE LIVES!

Hope I didn't accidentally get any baking soda in there :O

A small update: Still musty, and I don't have the option to air them out right now unfortunately. (There's a room I might be able to use once it's cleaned out, but it's been rainy all week and I don't want them to get damp)  The baking soda seems to have gotten rid of some of smell, so I guess I can put fresh soda in. I don't want to risk damaging them any more, so I might have to skip the vinegar idea.

Its taking its time but it sounds like you are making progress! Unfortunately I have come across some ponies which take quite a while and a lot of baking soda/fresh air cycles to get sorted.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Have patience... I'm on month three of stinky pony treatment here.  Currently they are all in a giant vinegar bath...  Soon it will be time for the dishwasher and the baking soda again!  :D

If you can't do the fresh-air trick, try putting them in a small, closed container with a bit of vinegar. It really does work wonders--I had to use it because my condo doesn't have a yard or balcony, and was pleasantly surprised.  The vinegar smell fades in a couple hours, too, so all you end up with is a nice "fresh" smell.

Glad you made progress and got Angel head back on.  They can be tricky but it is good to get them off if they need a good cleaning.

They were in a box in a basement almost 20 years so I'm not expecting miracles! Thanks for the further suggestions.
