Dug up some G1 ponies--now what? (Disaster update post 8)
« on: May 11, 2013, 11:14:21 PM »
I dug up some ponies, and they're cute, but rather filthy and musty. Is there a way to clean/restore them without using chemicals? I can leave them outside I guess (where they won't get rained on/sun faded/stolen by a seagull and raised as its own) to help with the mustyness. I think I've also heard something about cat litter (not used of course) for this sort of thing? Is there a cure for mustyness? They're pretty foul...

As for cleaning, I had a go at them with soap and water and then a bit of mineral oil just because I had it, but it did nothing so far.

Oh, and one of them is flocked but I don't really want to deflock her. I like fuzz.

Is So Soft Angel rare?

Putting them in a container with baking soda should help with the smell. I know others have also put them in the freezer.

Magic Eraser is a good thing to try for cleaning them. Just be careful of symbols and eyes, it can remove them.

SS Angel is definitely a sought-after pony.

All right I'll try that thanks!

The other pony I found was Tootie Tails, a lovely pony, but (in my opinion) a terrible name.

I agree if you dont want to try harder chemicals, the good old 'a week in a tuperware with baking soda, a week in the fresh air, a week with the baking soda, and repeat' is a good idea.

So Soft Angel is both hard to find and sought after so I am sure if you dont want to keep them after you have cleaned them up you will find a good home for them :)

Okay, I'll do that when I can get a container!

Here's Angel herself

She's missing fuzz but the stuff that's left is stuck on good.
Here's Tootie Tails with a stylish Twist Tie on her tail, and looking like she got zapped:

And after I removed the tie and gave her a brief hairwash/brush with a G4 comb (it was all I had!)

I really like her colours.

Tootie Tails seems really prone to having wild hair to be honest! A great couple of ponies to find - congrats and I hope they clean up well for you!

Liquid fabric softener is fairly good on making the hair nice. I might have used shampoo to wash my flocked ponies.

I use shampoo and a clean new toothbrush (my dentist gives me really lame toothbrushes... They make great pony cleaning devices though!)

The good news is that the ponies are coming along well with just shampoo and scrubbing so far.

The bad news is that Angel's flocking isn't stuck on as well as I thought. I used a Qtip because I didn't have an extra toothbrush, which was probably a terrible idea. She looks ridiculous now, so I'm going to rub the rest of the flocking on underneath. She's still slightly fuzzy to the touch (and nice and sparkly to look at), although the remaining fuzz comes off when you touch her.

I'm super sorry- I know people like this pony to stay fuzzed because she's fairly rare.

Oh dear, more Angel problems. I got her head off to check for tail rust (no problems there--she's beautifully clean inside) and I can't get her head back on.

If I get the mildew smell out, could I sell her as a bait?

I definitely wouldn't sell Angel as bait. I'd be interested in buying her as a deflock project if you are looking to sell  :)

Ohhhh she's not bait!  She is popular enough that lots of people would love to buy her as a deflock!  :)  Myself included, LOL!  I had a flocked one and I wanted a deflock but I was too chicken to do it to the one I had... so I traded her!  :D

Yes, I would say in "pre-deflocked" (bait) condition she should still fetch at least $10.

Thanks everyone. I think at this point I'll air her out and maybe try to sell her later? I can. not. get. her head back on. I'm worried I might break her if I keep trying. Maybe I could sell her head and body separately (kidding!) I don't think I'll take the other's head off, because I figure if she doesn't have tail rust neither does the other pony, and I don't want two headless ponies.

Here's some of the damage

At least her colours are nice? (she's a bit bluer in person, thanks flash.)

Her clean interior. I was worried because I got a bit of water in her while cleaning her but she seems okay.

Do you think Hasbro will like my new pony toy suggestion?

Sadly, flocking is pretty sensitive. I almost completely deflocked my Paradise with only warm water.
