I don't mind the art, but I do agree that it shouldn't be seen in google searches unless specifically looked for. I don't like googling pictures of characters (for anything really) and seeing NSFW images when I'm not looking for them. It's really sad that people have to monitor google searches even more because people don't hide it and/or require you to have an account or something to view it.

I prefer it when it's more "tastefully" done. I really enjoy Shane Glines' and Amy Mebberson's pin up girl drawings. So beautifully done.

I don't think supervising would help in this case. Unsavory art is gonna come up if you google image a pony unknowing what the fandom has done, whether a parent is there or not. All a parent can do is quickly close the tab and hope the kid didn't see too much.

And honestly? It shouldn't be like that. Every fandom is gonna have some NSFW fanart, but this is just...ridiculous. :|
Don't make google image searches?
Honestly, if you hang out online for an extended period of time, you WILL see things you don't want to from time to time, I have seem COUNTLESS images I wish I had not without ever looking for them, but there; not much you can do except shrug at it and move on, even hiding the art under a million warnings and specialty sites will not hide it forever.
Parents should know that the internet is a cess pool of everthing good and bad the world has to offer and I'm sure a parent that is knowledged in the online world would know that it's not really safe for kids, or anyone really.
Granted my parents did not supervize me online ever, and I don't want my own kids, so maybe I don't really know.
I just don't get the argument that's basically "but the kids might see it" kids should not be allowed online unsupervised. Full stop. No excuses.

In this case, it hits harder because this show was meant to have a feminist message, and tell girls they can be anything they want to be. For people to come in and hijack that message to sexualize the characters is just galling. I'm not talking about the non-sexual art; I love SFW fanfic type things and write them myself. It's the stuff that's ludicrously out of step with the show's message that gets to me.

I suppose then it comes down to whether or not you think that depicting a female character, explicitly, as a sexual being is anti-feminist. I don't personally think so, but that's a matter of opinion. :)

True on that.
While it's true that women are oftentimes more sexually depicted in media and I can see why women get angry, you can't see women depicted sexually as something bad always. It's like saying feminists shouldn't engage in sexual acts because it's degrading to their own gender.
I am a feminist myself and I get frustrated at how often women are objectified in the media, but it's not always something bad in a fandom.

I wouldn't mind it so much if it wasn't so visible accidentally.   Google has a safe search for images that does a good job for the most part so I'm not too worried when I'm surfing.  But it is hard to explain to a child why she can't look up ponies on her own.  It's become natural for people to instantly google things they've become interested in so kids want to be able to do the same.

But as annoying as it is, there isn't much that can be done about it other than report the image.  Children have to be monitored on the internet for their own safety no matter how much they pout about it.  :P

The trouble is that bronies have their own slang for these things, so if they tag it, they use the slang terms so things sometimes turn up on tumblr searches anyway. Protip: type [edit ~ hathorcat] into your Tumblr Savior. On a side note, mine probably makes me look very weird with all the things I have listed.

And a lot of people are disrespectful about this, thinking they should be able to post NSFW things all over the place, draw creepy romantic relationship pictures, and you can never, ever, ever call them out because "love and tolerate" means never criticize or dislike anything ever. Didn't some jerkfaces draw "rule 34" of Faust's OC, show it to her, and complain when she didn't like it because she should be flattered?

Point is, not everyone can let things slide. Some things are even extremely upsetting to people (shipping adults with children, incest, etc.) While this certainly isn't the only fandom to have a bunch of rotten apples (I've seen some disturbing things in the Fullmetal Alchemist fandom,) it's certainly one of the most vocal right now.  And one of the ones that makes the most excuses for itself.

I also don't think not wanting to see Rarity with a huge butt, with a submissive face, saying OMG BRONIES PLZ LOVE AND TOLERATE MY BUTT* is anything to do with censorship.

*oh no, now someone's gonna draw that!1

Honestly I also want to say there is worse things than this for kids to find a fan-fiction i will not mention is hell of a lot worse than any sexualized art, but that being said their is a dark side to everything, adding that i feel sex shouldn't be viewed as dirty so in that way i don't feel the art is dirty.

Like I said, that's my opinion based on my views of what I've seen. I don't think my honest and heartfelt opinion deserves to be derided in that way. :(

I'm sure that for you to have posted something so negative, you must be very frustrated. But I think we're better than that and can have a civil discussion without posting silly memes... can't we?

Well, I'd prefer it if you didn't try to turn "men making graphic, demeaning and hateful porn" into "this is totes feminist!", whether or not it is your "heartfelt" belief.

Porn is not anti-feminist on the face of it. But a lot of porn - especially that which is damaging, violent, demeaning and created wholly by men for men - is not feminist.

EDIT: To be honest though, I really, really doubt someone who felt it was appropriate to make a rape joke knows what feminism means, come to think of it. So I rescind my horrified disbelief.

Wow. Personal attacks. I, um... I'm not even going to get into my own past when it comes to rape. I'm going to leave it.

You know... I've had my piece and I can see that my speaking my mind is making people angry, and all this rudeness is hurting my feelings. I love this place because it's usually such a cheerful place, and the way people are speaking to each other in thread is making me sadder than ANYTHING I could stumble across on Google Image Search. It's not going to do me any good sticking around here.

Anyone remember when the new Pokemon game was announced and all those kids googled "Pokemon X" and got some... not so savory results?

I have no problem with weird pony art or writing. I've read and seen things before that I thought were interesting, and I've seen things that I've just had to walk away from and forget.  It's not all my cup of tea, but someone out there enjoyed it and was happy to make it, so I don't think it's my place to judge at all.

I do wish that sexual and gorey results wouldn't come up in innocent google searches, though. Not for my sake, but because there are younger people online, or parents who might mistake fan-made pictures for legit MLP content, or moms looking at pretty ponies with their little kids. On Tumblr blogs, there's some option to make it so that your blog isn't archived in search engines. I just think it would be better if NSFW sites had something like that too- i.e., you'd have you google something very specific and intentional to get those types of results.

Basically, I think it's fine for people to make that kind of content. I just wish it wasn't so... out there for everyone to see.

Yes! I agree! I don't like it when I go through some tags on tumblr (LPS, Monster High, Black Canary and other female comic book characters) and find NSFW pictures that I really didn't want to see. I tend to ignore it as it doesn't come up too often and it doesn't really bother me, but it's really only bothersome because I wasn't intentionally looking for them.

Tumblr actually has a great option in-site too, where you can mark your blog as NSFW, and if someone else has checked a box saying they don't want to see NSFW blogs in tags, it'll disappear. But a lot of people never notice either option, so they go unused.
