Just a musing but what about ponies that do have the original curls though...
What do you do if you get a pony with fabulous factory curls but it has a dirty body? Do you not feel like the hair should be cleaned because if the body is that dirty then surely the hair would be too?
Or is it simply that a 30 year old pony that has managed to retain its factory curl is most likely to have less play dirt altogether?

I'm a clean freak, so almost everything that comes through my hands gets cleaned.  The ponies I posted, all regular ones were washed before the pictures were taken, the SoSofts bodies got dusted off with a fluffy brush (like for blush or foundation, I'm not good with makeup, but I picked it up at a cosmetics store, it's very soft and gentle, great for kicking display dust off so softs). and I did rinse their hair. Those were pretty clean, just a bit dusty....

Dirty hair though, There is a way to wash even sticky grime out of hair without loosening or messing the curls. Commonly you see dust, some dirt or it's sticky from plasticizer leeching (or from other things like kids that handled their toys after having messy candy or Popsicles etc). All that sort of stuff I rinse or wash out. I use cooler slower running water, pre-cut anything I'm using to wash or condition the hair before hand so it doesn't need much rinsing to wash out and I have a hand under the curls to support them. I also work on one thing at a time, do the tail and mane separately. I blot the hair dry with a towel after, rest the pony on her side, position the curls where they should be and leave her until the hair is dryish to the touch and then stand her again. :) as you can see the curls stay pretty perfect.

Because curls are awesome!  :D

Seriously, though, I guess I'm like FantasticFirefly- they get washed and cleaned but with care taken so as to not make things worse.  Cold water, soft brushes, sections at a time...  I get them moist with cold water and gently guide them around my pinkie finger as a guide and slowwwwwwwwly "tease" them into shape.  If you use something like a paintbrush/makeup brush to go along, there will be less crazy flyaways.  Then you gently lean them in appropriate places to dry.

Most ponies with really nice factory curl aren't really grosser than a good wipe with a cloth and some mild cleanser won't take off.  If they were played with and got grimy, the curls got crushed and mussed - or brushed right out!

I don't want to pat myself on the back but I think I do a good job restoring factory curls and ringlets... it makes no difference to me if someone recurls it or not... as long as they aren't using weird hair products to make their ringlets or curls, that would NEVER make or break a pony deal for me... and I'm decently picky and like my ponies NM, but a re-curled soft curl is so much prettier than some frizzy factory curl, IMHO.

If you wash pony hair but don't comb it while it's wet, a lot of the original curl stays in.

For clean ponies with factory curl that's messy and has some flyaways, I just tidy it up very carefully and gently.  I'll comb it gently around my finger, so the hairs curl in the same direction, more or less.

If a pony has clean curly hair but a dirty body, I'll just be careful not to get her hair wet while I bathe her.  But the hair always gets a little damp, at least, so I let it dry thoroughly before I comb it, or I'll just comb the curls out of the damp hair.
Nirvana grails:  Reverse Gusty (upgrade), Peru Windy and Moonstone (upgrade), Brazil TAF upgrades, Argie Powder w/ white hair (upgrade), French Windy and Moondancer (upgrades), Spain TAF's, TE's, and piggies.  These are my biggest wants, but I'm looking for tons more nirvanas, especially Greeks, Brazilians, and Peruvians.  Feel free to PM me for sales or trades.  But please note that I'm also fairly picky.

If you use VERY hot but not highly pressurized or fast moving water, the curls will sometimes spontaneously "reform".  It's fun!

It may sound against the grain but I have used compressed air from a can on mine when I am cleaning them up - its intense enough to shift dust and small dirt which is in the hair but its not a constant enough stream to actually de-curl :P

I love factory curl if it still looks nice, even if it has loosened a bit - they just look so pretty and sweet IMHO, especially on ponies where it's harder to recreate, like Rainbow Curl.  Straight hair I can do.  Curls I'm just too darn lazy for.  :P

I can appreciate a pony with factory curls and certainly would not remove them. However, I prefer ponies with fairly straight hair...
