Well, if starshine still has a somewhat brownish tinge or brown spots to her body I'd say pass on the sunfading; she'll probaby burn.
If you're looking for a unique restore might I suggest pearlizing?

If pics will help with your decision; this is starshine before sun bathing:

Would LOVE to see your progress thus far!

Almost sounds like moonstone would benefit from a sunfade... if stuff isn't coming out of the pores maybe a nice h202 soak would loosen things up..

Thank you mlp4me, that is helpful and your pearlised Starshine is lovely! I have had a Starshine like the one in your photo before, with the symbol all bled out and brown spots - the one I have here doesn't look quite the same but you guys can take a look at the photos and tell me what you think! :)

These are pictures of them after two boiling water and oxy baths:

Starshine looks brighter in all of these photos than she does in real life. She's white, but still covered in dingy brown patches. They don't look like they're sunken in *too* deep though so I think she may be salvageable! :)

I feel silly now that I didn't take a picture of their other sides before for comparison! The dirt on Moonstone was much thicker and you could see lines in it (if you look closely near her symbol you can still make them out), a lot of that has been removed with acetone. It didn't seem to affect the stains on Starshine.

What do you all think I should try next?

Magic Eraser! I would certainly try that on Moonstone to see if you have any luck. The other option is a soak in sugarsoap.

I wouldnt be too afraid of the sunburning, you dont have much to lose.  ;) And if she does sunburn, you can always do that pearlizing! I've whitened many ponies with acne cream. Again, it can also make her yellow, but not more than she already is.

Here's some before and after pictures from ponies i've whitened with acne creams:

It even made the cancer spots on Baby Quackers much lighter.  :)

That pearlized Starshine looks really pretty btw!

Hathorcat, how much sugarsoap to water do you use? I still have a box here from when I redocorated my room :) I'll give the magic eraser a try too.

Wow, Eldarwen, they turned out great! What type of cream did you use? How long did it take? :)

I have no idea what kind of brands you have there, but anything with 'benzoyl peroxide' in it works. Be careful with it, it can make ponies yellow or bleach the colour out, but with whitening bad condition ponies, its awesome. Dont put it on symbols or eyes though.  :) For Baby Moondancer it took only 2 days. And I didnt use sunlight at all, just the cream. But Baby Quackers was in the window with the acne cream and it took about two weeks. But her plastic is rock hard, Moondancer's isnt, I guess that has something to do with it. I just change the cream every morning and every evening, I dont know if its needed, but I feel it makes it faster.

Oh and dont use this on Moonstone, her colour would most likely bleach out.  :( White and yellow ponies are the easiest and safest.

Starshine looks fab, looks like both would still benefit from some sun time!
(I'm wary of acne/bleaching creme's on ponies; we've had threads discussing it before... they do work wonders on playsets!)

Be super careful with acne cream on ponies. I am not denying I have seen people have success with it but I would strongly recommend not using it on colour ponies and also watch white ponies carefully as they are prone to yellow from it. And remember it can be months and months after use that you ll see the damage. The cream gets right into the pores of the plastic and even after you think you have removed it it will still be there working at breaking the plastic down. I know I sound like a warning against it - but I have seen so many threads and spoken to so many people with problems, I think its always worth considering all other options first.

As to the sugarsoap - I dissolved it to whatever the instructions say to be honest. It seems to vary depending on the brand. But I want to say its about a 5% solution - so for every litre I pop in about 3-4 tablespoons.

Acne cream has its dangers, there is no denying that, but when you have a white pony in this condition, the worst thing that can happen is that nothing happens. I only said to use it on Starshine anyway, it's absolutely not safe for Moonstone.

Acne cream can bleach or yellow white ponies, but when you already have a badly discoloured and yellow pony... Well, you do the math. I've whitened soo many white ponies and never had even one single problem.

Yes, acne cream IS very unstable for colored ponies and for ponies that are already white, but with cases like this, there really is nothing to worry about. And yes, always try sunfading first, but if she does burn or nothing happens, then acne cream can actually whiten her.

I wasn't criticising :) As you can see in my comment I did say that I know people have had luck with it. Everyone has different techniques which some people shy away from and others will swear to - that's the nature of collecting and there is no set science to a lot of it.

No matter what is advised I think its always good to caution on the cons as well as promote the pros - as after all someone may prefer their pony as is rather than it ending up yellowed or they may agree with you and decide it makes no difference to them so they may as well try. Its all about personal preference and weighing the risks.
