I have to say that looks like a fun restoration project.  I wouldnt customize them yet, you can do miracles with time and patience. I wouldn't be surprised if you can still save them both.

Oh my goodness! Well - if nothing else they are at least with a pony collector who is going to love them back to restoration or customisation!

Personally I would be tempted by the challenge to see how good a condition you could get them back to but I think in that condition I know I would call them bait.

The moondancer reminds me of a ringlets (BnG) that my bestie got from one of her friends.. she was literally caked in mud, and was brown stained all over. We used acetone every few days until it faded out the brown marks... she's not too bad now. On a side note, that can also work on lipstick stains (if it's lippy and not just marker)

Those stains on Moonstone look sunk in, if you don't manage to get them out, dying her a nice dark shade is an option as a custom project.  I have a baby unicorn that was half covered in sharpie so thick and for so long it has soaked right through her plastic and into the insides.  Ended up finishing the job and giving her a few dye dunkings to help even out the color, there was simply no saving her white.

Oh no! That poor moonshine!! Oh...poor things!  I hope you can fix them up. Moonshine is my favorite g1 pony and it makes my heart hurt to see one look like that! I wish you all the luck in the world to shine them up.

I always prefer to restore G1s if I can (not least because I hate doing FBRs, haha) so I'll definitely be trying that first. I've just never seen a pony that looked so bad I questioned whether it could even be customized! D:

They're almost pristine on the inside though, aside from a little tail rust! I was expecting to open them up and find unspeakable horrors!

Starshine looks sunburnt to me, but personally, I'd try sunfading after scrubbing her down anyway just in case. Can't really get any worse...

First of all, props to you for undertaking their restoration!

Starshine's pretty bad, but boy, does Moonstone take the cake... she makes me think of foalpatrol's Windy somehow http://mlparena.com/mlp/index.php/topic,318455.0.html - what is it about Rainbow Ponies, they seem to get into all sorts of mischief!

Wish I could offer some suggestions, but if it isn't mould on Moonstone, I haven't the clue how to handle it.  Good luck, though!
