Tails Too Thin (Advice Needed)
« on: February 08, 2013, 08:42:23 AM »
OK, so the G4 ponies have really small holes for their tails. Is there any simple way to widen it neatly? I've tried cutting it with an Xacto knife but I generally make a mess of it. Would it maybe be easier of boiled the pony first to soften the plastic? I like the make really thick tails on my customs and the poor little G4s always seem to get torn or I have to compromise and make thinner tail.

Halp?

I widen them using a dremel. It is easy and you don't have to worry about making a mess of it. I use a small sanding bit which is small at the tip and gets wider towards the bottom - so i can make it any size i want.

A small drill or dremel can give you a larger, cleaner tail hole.  I use an exacto, but its not an exact(o) science.  (I'm feeling pun-ish today) A knife is tricky to get smooth edges with.

Thinking more about the xacto - when i have to use one - when I can't find my dremel, LOL. I do soften the plastic with warm water and then instead of actually planning out my cuts I just twist the xacto around in the tail hole gently pressing inwards so that the wider part of the knife will shave off the plastic. This to me works better with the softer g3s but i have had it work okay with g4s too.

CSA is correct it does take some practice to get it nice and smooth. If its not nice and smooth just add enough hair in the tail to make the wonky cuts unnoticeable (spelling?)

I didn't widen the tail hole- I just softened the plastic (by holding under very hot water) before pulling the tail through-

I use a pencil up the butt. The cone shaped tip slowly widen as it goes. Leave it in for a day or so and pull the tail through quickly after you remove the pencil from aforementioned orifice.

LOOOL  :lmao: Pythia the way that was phrased XD XD It's a good idea though! I usually just stick a scissors in there and twist a bit, widens the hole nicely.

If you're putting in more hair than would usually be on the original pony, you really should make a larger hole one way or another. If you try to force too much hair through a smaller hole you get kind of a... I don't know how to describe it. A pucker? And if you try to force way too much hair through you can even split the pony plastic.

I do the exact same thing!  Can't stand skimpy tail hair.  /grump

I use my dremel to widen tail holes, but when it's dead, and I don't want to wait for it to charge, I'll just twist an xacto blade around in there.  :P

I just put one of the parts of a good scissors on the hole, then I turn around gently... That's the best way I found till now, I even tryed in G4 and that was ok!

I wonder if a drill would work in a way similar to a dremel?  I have used a drill to widen fakie tail holes (since I don't have a dremel and can't justify the expense....).

I use my husky blade. I lightly draw a circle for how large i want the tail hole to be, and gradually work my way around. Takes awhile, sinve you don't want to go through the plastic all at once, and I have to be careful to not oit too much pressure on the blade so it doesn't go out of control, but it works for me. :)

I have a battery powered dremmel that I use for widening the tail holes.

And aong that line of thought - http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-25ecodZ5yc1vZ12kz/R-202713165/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=dremel+tool&storeId=10051#.URgj-vKa5Sg

Not a bad price, considering. Pity it's an online-only thing, but still not bad. (Compared to $79, anyway.)
