I'm stuck with a sparrow..
« on: January 31, 2013, 02:54:50 PM »
So yesterday my cat snatched a sparrow out of a bush and handed it to me.... no the bird has trouble flying but now external injuries. it eats, poops, and hops and walks.. sleeps a lot.. The thing is.. it won't leave! I tried to set it free but it keeps following me and hopping around the ground. I put it in the pine tree and it fluttered down the best it could. It sits in my hand and won't get out.. I want to turn it loose but it just won't go.  >_<

Advice?

I think you have a friend for life there, I wonder if this one lost it's mate and has now seen you as a substitute.  Can you tell what kind of sparrow it is or weather it is male or female ?  If it can't  fly I would give it a few days we had to do this with a gold finch that hit the window.

What part of Michigan are you in? This group is in Northern Michigan and may be able to help. Worth a shot to call them maybe?

I'm right on the border of Ohio  >_<

I think it might be a male. He's more bolder in color. Looks just like a common sparrow. I can't have a bird lol.. I have cats. I'm hoping his wing will get better and he'll leave. He really shouldn't hang around my house. I think the only thing wrong with him is his wing. He can flutter a little bit. Maybe some rest will help?

He doesn't look young like a baby. I think he's full grown.

Is the wing drooping at all they should sit evenly when at rest and can you stretch the wing out and take a look at it?

Haven't tried stretching it. It lets me pet him with my gloved thumb. And they sit nicely and normally on his back. I think it can heal. He isn't missing feathers or anything. Maybe it got strained? I talked to a retired vet and she told me that they won't do anything for it unfortunately. I'm on my own. >.<

I would try to look for a rehab group closer to you. I found the one above with a 2 second google search, so hopefully you can find something. I wouldn't want to leave him if he can't fly, I'd be so scared a cat will get him. Poor little guy :(

I'm thinking of checking to see if I can have my friend take him. She's the retired vet.. I think she's on to me lol. But I don't think she'll be able to resist his cuteness. I won't put him back outside again until I know he's flying. For now he lives in my walk in closet when the cats are inside in a little cage.

I've had my cats bring me mice before. So I'm not as upset about a bird. At least a bird doesn't creep me out lol.

How fun! (Was so hoping you'd have a Jack Sparrow following you around by the title of the thread). Best of luck with whatever you choose to do with the little creature. Let us know?

Oh my... xD

Something similar happened to me, actually !

A few years back, I was on my room and I started hearing fluttering and a bird chirping coming from the toilet. Needless to say I was just like o_O I went to check and I saw a sparrow stuck on the ventilation LOL I have no idea how it got there, but I had to get the poor little fellow out of there. I unscrewed the ventilation thing and the little guy flew right into my room ! I tried to follow it around and scare it to the window, so he could get out. Failing to do this and tired of being owned by a bird, I went back to doing whatever I was doing. The bird just flew onto a couple of plushies I had near the window and stayed there, enjoying the sun (yes, enjoying the sun, I could tell). Later on, a friend came over and when I returned to the room, the sparrow was gone. I felt really happy for the little bird, but a bit sad for it to go so soon.

I would say to take him to someone who can have a look at him, since he can't fly and all. :)

Aw- poor thing.  My guess is he is injured and can't fly-

Unfortunately, most wildlife/bird rescue places won't take in birds they consider pests such as sparrows/pigeons/starlings  (or that was my experience anyway)

I hope you can sucker your vet friend into helping him!  If you have a room that you can keep the cat out of- maybe you can rehabilitate him in there (in a large box or something)

LOL! I've been called Snow White before. I tend to attract birds, raccoons, cats, deer and everything else in between. Even wolverines...

I have the most odd luck with animals!

So far little guy is doing good. He's sleeping. I'll be talking to my friend tomorrow to try and sucker her into taking him. If not, I guess it's healing time until I release him somewhere AWAY from my house lol.
