Repinking Question
« on: January 25, 2013, 07:13:36 PM »
I have repinked a few ponies and they've turned out good. The only problem is, it's not the *exact* match to the original pink. Here's a comparison pic:

Original pink on Rosedust on the left and a repinked Little Flitter on the right.

Does anyone know how to get the exact color match? I used Rit dye (petal pink), can I mix colors? The repinked one seems to be more of a cool pink (almost with a slight purple or blue tint) rather than warm.

You can mix colors.  I use a pinch of a golden yellow (don't remember which one) to give it a warmer tint ;).  It's not an absolutely perfect match, but it's a lot closer than Petal Pink alone.

Ooh, I'll have to remember that for my other repinking projects. :) Raindrop, do you have any examples you could show us, by any chance?

Giving this a little push to the top, if anyone else has managed to get a close match. Once I know a good recipe I can order colours from the US. I have some spare faded girls I'd love to liven up. :D

I actually have found crimson red waterpaint provides a much closer match to be honest - or at least the closest I have managed to achieve to date. I have always found rit, even with some different inclusions, tends to never look enough of a pink it always has a little too much red or a little too much blue.

I have a new question

If I repink the hair with either Rit dye or water paint, is ok to mail that pony? I don't want the heat (in case it's hot) to cause the hair to bleed onto the pony. I'm in a swap and I'm wondering if I should leave the pony with white hair or repink. I don't want my partner to get a stained pony :yikes:

Yeah, that's something I have worried about in the past. The only thing I can suggest is to completely wrap the hair  in tissue paper secured with a little tape and not touching the body at all. I'm sure that would stop any staining issues in transit :)
Thanks to SDS for my siggy and avi

Yup I agree with Party - I always find thats the best way to post any pony which has a hair colour which isnt colour fast. :)

Whether rit or watercolour that the stain stays very well in the hair but yes if you get soap and water into it the water will run a little pink occasionally.

Perhaps if you are worried you could pm your swap host and ask her to ask your partner if they would prefer the pony's hair repinked or white? Maybe if they prefer the latter you will be able to send her as is?

Thanks, Cat :) I've decided to send her with white hair, I'm too nervous about it getting on the body! My partner said they're fine with white hair :)

Agree. Crimsom watercolor works best.

Could you elaborate on this crimson waterpaint?  What brand?  Is there a tutorial?

Well, I've used some of my kid's. :D So brand doesn't count. I've just boiled some water (one cup), then mixed the watercolor in boiling hot water with a brush and then just dipped the hair in that hot water. Then I've rinsed the hair in cold water and checked if it needs a second try.

Red waterpaint works really well! Its so easy, you cant really mess up. I just bought the chepest brand I found. I've managed to get perfect shade of pink that way.
