I know this is kinda off topic but when someone from the US send a package internationally do they wrap it in brown paper?

I've shipped in old cereal boxes overseas before and NEVER had an issue.I just sipped off a swap DOMESTICALLY it was only 1.39 LBS and cost $11.25 to ship! Domestic shipping now even makes me want to consider another carrier besides the USPS!
Is there any alternative for small international shipments?
It's price equalization across North America, that's all. Can you drive/fly it there yourself for cheaper?
