Ideally I would like to avoid having to buy the playset itself just for two ponies.

That's a pretty tall, oddly specific order you got there! Erm, well, good luck! It's going to be pretty difficult to swipe both without the castle from the same buyer, considering most people bought it for Cadence OR Shining Armor, and if they bought both then they bought them for themselves...

But getting them separately is more expensive than buying the castle myself.
Something I'd rather not do as I don't want it.
